Mooste, Estonia
Mooste Guest Studio (MOGS)
PostsovkhoZ 4 ISOLATION - International Summer Symposium of Art and Ideas
For 10 days artists live and work in and with the local community in Mooste on a thematic issue.
The annual PostsovkhoZ symposium addresses a range of social and cultural issues through diverse artistic practices in a temporary international community. For 10 days artists live and work in and with the local community in Mooste on a thematic issue. The event is initiated with a seminar on the social and natural sciences and culminates with the artists exhibitions and performances.

WHY ISOLATION?

First we consider the geographical context of the event in Mooste, a small place somewhere in Southeast Estonia. We then open this context to question whether isolation is dependent merely on location or does it extend from other larger social and political conditions? From previous themes of past PostsovkhoZ events; Territories, Strata, and PostsovkhoZ city and person, evaluation through creative interpretation is a valuable method to work with. We have gained experience and will continue to investigate this year with ISOLATION.

OPEN FORUM: To what degree is ISOLATION physical or imagined? Is ISOLATION determined by choice or is it imposed from outer forces? Are closed borders meant to protect the interior from the exterior or hide it? Is the flow of information a natural force of free movement or controllable resource meant to be contained? How does a community or organization survive in ISOLATION? In what ways are we as individuals affected and what kind of changes take place with ISOLATION?

ISOLATION- disjunction, separation, insulation, loneliness, mean of isolation, lack of interbreeding/pollination between close species or inside the species (biological).

Conditions of ISOLATION: geographical, social, economic, political or psychological climate

ISOLATION Tools and Factors: electronic broadcasting - iron curtains - velvet revolutions – information highways – open sources – terror alerts - distribution channels

Given the unusual context of a rural village as a place for an international art event, PostsovkhoZ takes a look at how the art “world” of galleries and state institutions, even as public outlets, can risk isolating contemporary art from larger social and cultural movements. Certainly, skeptical attitudes towards contemporary art exist, even by its practitioners. By choosing to focus on ISOLATION, PostsovkhoZ 4 opens its own condition to look at possibilities for working with its own public image.

The 10 day event, taking experiences from previous PostsovkhoZ events, attempts to instigate cooperative activities the local community and the temporary international artistic community. This artistic community has always encouraged cooperation of Estonian artists and artists from abroad. Involvement will become real through the planned places of activities (village “central” square) and projects (joint workshops with children and village amateur theatre). PostsovkhoZ challenges exclusionary culture through inclusive participation.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:

To participate please send to MOKS via e-mail by the 15th of February the following:
· Preliminary project proposal to PostsovkhoZ4 are to be based on the theme of this years event.
Project intentions and descriptions should be clear. Include list of materials (budget) and technical equipment plus other conditions needed for realization. Preliminary electronic submissions should be limited to 1mb.

· Participant preferences for the location or social requirements of their project.

· CV and examples of recent work (links to online documentation or compressed .jpg images).

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION:

Participants will be accommodated at the Mooste School house (bring your own sleeping bag). Meals are provided twice a day (breakfast and dinner). Travel expenses of the participants will not be covered.

Limited material costs of selected projects will be covered according to the budget submitted.

More (visual) information about event, Mooste territory and place is available at http://mooste.ee/mogs/ or provided upon request via e-mail: mogs@mooste.ee

Participants will be announced by the beginning of May 2004

Special Conditions: As PostsovkhoZ is an open forum for exchange of ideas and creative exploration on social, cultural and environmental conditions, organizers can make suggestions for proposed projects. Preference is given to collaborative projects (e.g. Estonian artist may work with visiting artist or visiting artist may work with local amateur theatre group etc.) or site-specific work to be done in or around the Mooste village.

Places: Mooste “central” square (in the block house area), beach, schoolhouse, old barns and buildings, Mooste primary school, lake, local field or forest areas.

Participants: 10 Estonian + 10 international artists, Mooste amateur theatre, Mooste youth.

TIME-FRAME: (preliminary)

Aug 6: arrival of the participants
welcome greetings and meetings
Aug 7: PostsovkhoZ SEMINAR (whole day, in 2 sections)

(( ( mission ) ) ) )

The immedia electronic art exhibition has developed from a community
of artists and thinkers interested in the artistic possibilities of new
technologies. The immedia community exhibits the best of such art,
eschewing reckless application of powerful technology in favor of
electronic art which seeks deeper understandings of technology's
relationship with art and life in contemporary society.

As with any art, electronic art must explain our world to us in new ways,
helping us understand and relate to our environment. The immedia
community believes that the sweeping changes already wrought by
television and those still to be realized by computers and digital devices
necessitate a new art. This new art, reacting with and against new
technologies, has a deep responsibility to guide humankind's future
interactions with its new electronic environment. Technology must be
used in creative, intelligent ways to ensure an expressive future. The
immedia exhibition hinges on the belief that it is the electronic artist's
responsibility to realize the full creative potential of digital and analog
devices.
