First Person Update:
-------------------------------------------------

First Person is screening in San Diego, Michoacan Mexico, and Mexico City.

Get your copy: http://theredproject.com/firstperson/

First Person just screened this last weekend in San Diego as part of Technika Radica's Powering Up/Powering Down conference at UCSD. (http://teknikaradica.org/conference) We were there, but sadly I was not able to get the calls list out in time to let you all know.

First Person will be exhibited in ArtExpo 2004 from February 7-28 at Centro Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. This exhibition is curated by Luca Curci.

First Person will be exhibited from March 25th-April 8th at the Sala de Arte Publico Siqueiros (SAPS) in Mexico City. On April there will be a panel of lectures by Monica Mayer, a representative of SAPS, and Carla Herrera-Prats and Michael Mandiberg, followed by a reception.

What is first person:
-------------------------------------------------

First Person is a collaborative curatorial project by Carla Herrera-Prats, Michael Mandiberg, and Anne-Julie Raccoursier. This curated DVD foregrounds 12 young video artists in Mexico City and Los Angeles who are working with their own bodies in a hybrid space between video and performance. The artists included are Arturo Castelan, Ximena Cuevas, Sharon Hayes, Carla Herrera-Prats and Julia Steinmetz, Justin Lincoln, Michael Mandiberg, Rodney MacMillian, Amaranta Sanchez, Anne Walsh and Natalie Zimmerman.

This project exists as an edition of 1000 DVDs, which we are currently screening and distributing. We have re-purposed the DVD's menu/scripting structure to create an interactive visual essay combining photographs, video, audio, and text. Our goal is to distribute the 1000 edition of this DVD to a broader audience, via screenings, festivals, and via our website: http://theredproject.com/firstperson/

How to get a copy:
-------------------------------------------------

You can buy a copy online at http://theredproject.com/firstperson/

You can buy a copy in New York at The New Museum bookstore, and Printed Matter.

LTTR IS OFFICIALLY ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR ISSUE #3

Our curatorial theme is PRACTICE MORE FAILURE

LTTR is a new art journal invested in feminist queer genderqueer projects.

The deadline is FEBRUARY 14th, 2004

Text submissions can be emailed to info@lttr.org
Visual work can be submitted in the form of slides or original.
We are also accepting proposals for projects and/or pages.
What does your heart desire? What's going on?
Run wild with your associations, those personal and those political
and those perverted. Those repeated, those refused, those golden...

Send submissions to:
LTTR c/o Ginger and K8
3rd floor
347 Kingsland Ave.
Brooklyn, NY 11211
USA

The format of the third issue is yet to be determined. It will be based on
the submissions we receive, so
get ready and go! Send us your proposal.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO ALL INTERESTED PARTIES. Widely.
And ask questions to the editors at:
(emily) grandma6000@earthlink.net / K8@lttr.org / ginger@lttr.org

**************************
review of first issue from Broken Pencil
LTTR (Lesbians to the Rescue)
art magazine, #1, 32 pages, New York City,

Riot Grrl didn‚t disappear, it just got its Ph.D. Is this a zine? Not quite.
Is
it an artists‚ project? Again, not
quite, and I‚m sure that the LTTR collective would be overjoyed at such
liminality. They represent a new
complex spirit in both feminist art and identity politics. Much has
changed in those worlds since the mid-
nineties and LTTR is a beautifully constructed starting point for
understanding those changes. Combining
screen-printing, full colour offset, photocopies and wonderfully playful
inserts, this is truly an expanding and
exploding media. Noteworthy, a door hanger with humping bunnies
made by ginger brooks takahashi.
Several written pieces discuss gender, lust, death and performance, but
this is a zine that speaks slowly
and quietly in images, not narratives; I like to think of them as text
pieces, not articles. Over a dozen
international artists contributed to this project (including JD Samson of
you know who). All are standouts.
One doesn‚t have to open to LTTR to figure out that they want to fuck with
your head and your ideologies;
on the cover is a beckoning invitation to serious reflexivity˜a lesbian
performance piece referencing David
Wojnarowicz who was referencing Arthur Rimbaud. LTTR are here to
play and want you to play along with
them. (Brian Joseph Davis)

New grant line for documentary projects with immigrant/refugee youth

The California Council for the Humanities is currently soliciting
applications for its New Californians Story Project, a new grant line
with a one-time-only deadline of May 3, 2004.

The New Californians Story Project will support community participatory
photography/video projects with immigrant/refugee youth that result in
exhibits documenting the lives of contemporary California immigrants and
refugees. Grants of up to $15, 000 are available. Exhibits should take
place in April 2005.

The Council is particularly interested in projects exploring the
following themes:
*immigration to or arrival in California
*the challenges of becoming part of a California community
*the relations between newcomers and established residents
*the challenges of maintaining one's culture and adapting to a new one
*what it means to be a refugee or immigrant living in California today

We hope that the projects under the New Californians Story Project
provide opportunities for Californians to reflect on what it means to live
in a
state with a large population of immigrants and refugees.

View/download guidelines and application materials at
http://www.calhum.org/guidelines/guidelines_new_ca.htm. The application
deadline is May 3, 2004. Staff are conducting informational workshops
around the state in February and March. One will take place in LA on
Feb. 4, one in Ventura on Feb. 5, another in San Luis Obispo on Feb. 6;
workshops in Santa Barbara and Orange County will be scheduled for later in
the
month.

I'm looking for authors and photo collections for popular histories of Los
Angeles region neighborhoods and attractions. My name is Lee Hamovitz. I'm
a book editor for Arcadia Publishing, a publisher specializing in local
and regional photo histories. Check out the "local history" section of
your local bookstore to see some of our books.

As I say, Arcadia is actively seeking authors and photo collections for
photo histories on the various neighborhoods and attractions in greater
Los Angeles. It's my hope that there may be potential authors reading the
CultureNet list, or that people might pass this message along to potential
authors.

A little about Arcadia .....
We are NOT a vanity press. Arcadia specializes in producing photograph
filled books that document a local or regional history. A complete catalog
of our offerings can be found on our web site, ArcadiaPublishing.com. We
handle all aspects of the process, at NO COST to the author, whether
individual or organization. We finance the entire publishing process, from
editing to distribution, including publicity and marketing. Royalties are
paid to all authors, whether individuals or a heritage group. Our
editorial teams assist the authors from concept to printing, and our
marketing department promotes the book. We have established relationships
with the major bookselling chains.

If possible we generally like to work with an individual with access to
historical photographs and ephemera. This is our usual method and it works
out quite well for all. In some instances we also contract with a museum,
or heritage group. Since we pay royalties and offer free books to
authoring organizations, the books make excellent fund-raisers. Again,
Arcadia handles all aspects of the process at NO COST to the author,
whether individual or organization. Plus, we are adept at getting our
books onto the shelves of independent bookstores, as well as the larger
chains such as Borders and Barnes & Noble.

I'm happy to send a packet and sample book to anyone who has an idea and
resources for a book. They simply need to contact me with a mailing
address. Likewise, anyone with questions or suggestions should contact me
at the phone numbers and email address listed below. We are also pursuing
books on surrounding communities.

I hope this message is not too intrusive and that its subject makes it
worth the reading. During the early stages it's often necessary to contact
strangers to get a project off the ground.

Thank you for your time,

Lee Hamovitz

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Sweetest Taboo
Deadline: 19 March

Out of category, festival of experimental audiovisual work at STUK/Zed
Cinema, Leuven-Belgium 19 ? 24 / 04 / 2004. In its second edition, this
years festival will pay a tribute to EXPRMNTL., a long gone festival
Hors Normes founded by Jacques Ledoux, who also established the name
and fame of the Royal Belgian Film Archive in Brussels. This
experimental festival shook the foundations of the Casino of Knokke, a
Belgian bourgeois coastal town where it was held in the years
1963-1967-1974. Combining (your) new work and films of those remote
times, this festival wants to investigate if the agenda of the avant
garde of today (21st century) is still the same as it was back then.
The world has changed, did taboos and stereotypes shift or are they
still the same?

Haunted Media: Contemporary Art, Technology and the Paranormal (working
title) is accepting submissions of contemporary artwork involving
technology in any
manifestation exploring issues of the paranormal or occult. Haunted
Media will present contemporary artists whose work employs modern
communication technologies (photography, film, video, radio, internet,
computers) to explore culturally inbred questions/superstitions
concerning parallel worlds to our own. Since the invention of the
first communication technologies in the late nineteenth century, we have
always suspected or been afraid that there is something lurking within
the electronic devices
that surround us. Whether it is conspiracy theories of alien invasion

employed technology to prove or debunk stories of these visitations.
