WORKS/SAN JOSE - Queer Packaging/Body Commodities, June 2004.
"Queer Packaging/Body Commodities" investigates the current phenomenon of
sexualized identity and its visibility in a media-glutted America, whether
that identity is referred to as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender,
transsexual, or queer. What do the producers of a corporate mega-media
aesthetic invest in to satiate American consumers? Are these images of
fantasy or fetish and whom do they satisfy? How do they read for a public
or body politic that seeks to address a social and political environment in
transformation? Who is not included and what levels of inclusivity appear
tolerable? What of the abject body and dystopic vision? We invite artists
to respond and critique. We extend this critique to any form of American
mass media.
WORKS/San Jose is a non-profit contemporary visual and performance art
space dedicated to community involvement and the exploration of the
artistic experience. WORKS provides artists and the community an
opportunity to challenge and exchange cultural and artistic images and
ideas. WORKS fosters emerging and established artists and curators who
often have limited access to commercial spaces and large institutions.
San Jose, CA. Open: U.S, All Media: 2-D, 3-D, video, and digital media. No

Call for contributors for Journal of Lesbian Studies, deadline March 15, 2004
Thematic issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies on INTERSEX, TRANSGENDERS, AND QUEERS IN LESBIAN COMMUNITIES by Angela Pattatucci-Aragón.
The Journal of Lesbian Studies will be devoting a thematic journal issue and book on the topic of INTERSEX, TRANSGENDERS, AND QUEERS IN LESBIAN COMMUNITIES. What constitutes a Lesbian - personally, politically, and socially - has been an ongoing issue of contention in Lesbian communities for a number of years. While primarily a matter of heated internal debate in past decades, recent progress in areas such as same-sex marriage has caused the issue of group definition for Lesbians to take on greater importance. With the stakes so high, it has become necessary to educate the mainstream populace regarding who we are talking about (and who we are not) when the term Lesbian is used. This has resulted in a normalization of Lesbian images presented at the national level, with "dykes on bikes" replaced by mothers cradling infants and couples celebrating long-term stable relationships. Intersex, Transgender, and Queer individuals are viewed incompatible with this new homonormative image and as such are rendered invisible. Although marginalization in Lesbian communities is certainly not a new phenomenon for Intersex, Transgender, and Queer individuals, there are unique aspects at this point in time. One could argue that they are being asked to make a similar sacrifice ("for the greater good") to the one expected of Lesbians at the beginning of the modern women's movement in the early 1970's. At the same time, Intersex, Transgender, and Queer individuals are visible in increasing numbers at the local level and, in some areas, are enjoying greater acceptance in Lesbian communities. However, many argue that what they experience is not acceptance but is more akin to accommodation, and that much work is needed to move beyond mere accommodation to genuine acceptance. These and other related issues remain inadequately explored.
Contributions examining issues of Intersex, Transgenders, and Queers in Lesbian communities from any viewpoint are sought. Personal accounts are welcomed but should be located within a broader theoretical or historical framework. Authors are encouraged to be creative, using vehicles such as metaphor or a unique juxtaposition of contexts to make their points. Submissions should be limited to a focus on Intersex, Transgenders, and Queers in Lesbian Communities as opposed to a more general examination of issues these individuals may encounter in their lives.
Electronic submissions are preferred. Please send a one-page overview of your proposed contribution by March 15, 2004 to Angela Pattatucci-Aragón at apattatucci@rcm.upr.edu. Write "Journal of Lesbian Studies" in the subject line of your e-mail message. Submissions can also be mailed to Angela Pattatucci-Aragón, CIES/RCM, Universidad de Puerto Rico, P.O. Box 365067, San Juan, PR 00936-5067.
Proposals will be evaluated for originality, diversity of experience, and writing style. Please let your friends and colleagues know about this project.
All thematic issues of the Journal of Lesbian Studies are simultaneously reprinted in book form by Harrington Park Press, the book affiliate of Haworth Press. It is hoped that the resulting book will be used in lesbian studies courses and will be available in feminist bookstores.
Please encourage contributions to this volume so that this important aspect of our communities receives the attention it deserves!
In Sisterhood,
Angela Pattatucci-Aragón
