PERFORMANCE RESEARCH 10.4
On Techne: performance and the human-crafted environment
Performance Research Vol. 10, No. 4 (December 2005)
Issue Editors: Richard Gough and Mick Wallis

The aim of the issue is to explore ways in which one might describe, imagine or exploit the many relationships between aesthetic performance and the techne, so as to further our knowledge and understanding of each. By 'techne' (or tekne¯, tekhne¯), we mean to designate two linked areas: first, the human-crafted environment, which includes but also exceeds technology; and second, one term in the dialectical pair episteme¯ / tekhne¯, whose historical development from the classical Greek includes the sense of knowledge / craft.

netopticon report

Together with superficial anonymity and seemingly apparent ways of hiding or faking one's identity, the Internet delivers a new set of powerful and sophisticated instruments of surveillance. Network activity of an individual user, intercepted on the borders of ostensibly integral web realm, is easily back-traced by power holders - via IP address to ID number - and provides the agent for latent supervision of controlling eye-ear.

Scouting and tight inspection of personal information, at times readily exposed, serves economical and political interests of the system, helps creating the new ways of control and improves the old ones. Established around network security commercial structures continuously populate virtual file-cabinets, simultaneously supporting the channels of supervised data distribution.

netopticon - the current project of no-org.net - is an attempt to create an artistic and textual report on the topic of infringement of privacy and its protection. We are looking forward to net art works and texts dealing with resistance to manipulatively mediated concept of security, to art projects devoted to true anonymity of net-surfing and net-correspondence, to works intentionally feeding systems with falsified data, to any remarks, suggestions and ideas that would add up to a contemporary report on the topic.

Although it is not exclusive condition, projects that work on the three major platforms (Linux, Macintosh and Windows) are preferred.

The deadline for submissions is March, 30, 2005

New journal, The Senses and Society, seeks articles.

THE SENSES & SOCIETY, new journal from Berg
Editors: Paul Gilroy, David Howes, Douglas Kahn

Should you have an article you would like to submit, please write to
Michael Bull, managing editor, at The Senses & Society, Department of
Media & Film Studies, University of Sussex, Brighton, Sussex, BN1 9QQ UK
m.bull@sussex.ac.uk

A heightened interest in the role of the senses in society is sweeping the social sciences, supplanting older paradigms and challenging conventional theories of representation. The senses mediate between mind and body, idea and object, self and society. The senses are gendered, racialized and classed. The senses are also increasingly technologized and commercialized across a range of industries (e.g. design, marketing) - all of which make use of the subtle yet profound impact sensory stimuli have on social behavior. Simply put, sensation is fundamental to our experience, yet is often overlooked as a site for cultural analysis.

Addressing all of the above, this path-breaking new journal provides an antidote to the verbo- and ocular-centrism of conventional social scientific accounts of meaning and human agency. It also problematizes the increasingly homogenized notion of 'the body' by highlighting the multiple forms of human sensuousness. The Senses & Society creates a forum for examining the varieties of sensory experience that exist in contemporary society, and promotes research on the cultural, political and aesthetic dimensions of sensory expression and communication.

The BASEMENT project in the House of World Cultures will be the 3rd edition of the
transmediale Workspace. A hybrid of exhibition and open lab with workshops and
presentations, the BASEMENT provides insight into the approaches and working methodologies
of the participating artists, as well as the opportunity for dialogue. The BASICS theme of
transmediale.05 is articulated in this space by the idea of BASIC NEEDS.

Projects in the BASEMENT take a closer look at basic issues such as housing, health, food,
security, mobility and communication. Several artists and project-groups who deal with
geo-political, social and technical infrastructure
are invited to present their work. What technology is required to satisfy our BASIC NEEDS?

Thematically connected to the BASEMENT are the workshops and the transmediale salon.

People that play do not make trouble! This adaptation of an old Czech saying about children sums up the paradoxes involved in the contemporary game culture. Are games neutral in respect to values, politics, gender etc.? Are they a powerful new ground for rethinking these categories and forming new views of these issues? How can games influence the public? Are the virtual worlds of the Massive Multiplayer Online Games just an escape from everyday life or emergent new communities offering a different forms of public engagement and social life? Do they confirm that bread and games keep the pleb quiet or they offer a potent new medium for self determination and experiments? How is art reacting to these issues? How are games (mis)used by art and how is art (mis)used by games?

The computer games are the most fruitful ground for multidisciplinary encounters. The goal of the conference is to display the variety of approaches, ideas and discussions around games that are taking place today.
