From:

http://www.urbanfestival.hr

On exUF 2004:

exUF is a project with basic tendency to infiltrate art into urban life and
intensify communication between inhabitants with their city and its
infrastructure.

One of the results of industrialisation process and increasing urbanisation
is the construction of oneís ìfree timeî ñ primarily as the opposition to
working time. This firm and mostly unquestionable dichotomy actually hides
the fact that, seen from the point of view of fluctuating capital, free time
is a unique field. Especially in urban life it is quite planned, controlled
and rather tradable. Considering we live in the time of production and
consumption of cultural and symbolical goods free time offers the broadest
space for consumerism. Who controls our free time? Who makes money on it? In
which way cultural ñ artistic field functions as a market, as a place where
goods and ìadditional valuesî are produced? What are public spaces and in
which way do they function? What about privatised public spaces?

If it became as the consequence of striving for safety and order or escaping
from the unpredictable nature, the city has managed to create a paradoxical
construction of free time placing it under control. Therefore we are
interested in artistic works that deal with the way in which everyday life is
structured, rethink free and working time relation and free time annulation,
consider the relation between private and public and also specific places of
production / consumption of pleasure, fun, leisure or are interested in
controlling and segmenting the everyday life.

Since Urban Festival does not want to be the manifestation trading the
projects offered at the world market of art and deprived of any socio-
cultural context, but the means of probing Zagreb urban context / life, this
year we have decided to give up on the three ñ part festival form. It will be
substituted with weekend happenings through one month of ìurboscopiaî, which
refers to four weekends in May (7 ñ 9 May, 14 ñ 16 May, 21 ñ 23 May, 28 ñ 30
May). Once more we are trying to destruct classical festival form and
following that have decided to change the name of this manifestation: exUF,
meaning Ex Urban Festival.

Studio National des Arts Contemporains

A post-graduate art and audiovisual research centre. Its aim is to enable young artists (upper age limit: 35) to produce works using professional standard equipment under the direction of established artists.
The emphasis is on breaking down the barriers between media and languages. Consequently, the theoretical and practical work embraces all audiovisual languages, from traditional and electronic media (photography, cinema, video) to digital technology and other new developments. Every week, a whole day is given over to historical and theoretical lectures on various aspects of modern and contemporary art (these are open to the general public).

who for ?

Le Fresnoy is designed for students of any nationality seeking to develop their knowledge and expertise in audiovisual media by working on projects intended as a first step towards a professional career. Applications are considered from all educational backgrounds and from all creative fields (visual arts, cinema, photography, video, architecture, music, performing arts, etc.). Students must, however, be free of commitments liable to clash with their course.

To realise his or her project, each student is allotted a budget and given access to the Studio’s production and post-production equipment. As well as these individual works, students collaborate on the productions of their fellows and on the projects of visiting artists. Successful completion of the two-year course is recognised by the National Studio of Contemporary Arts diploma.

Le Fresnoy also welcomes visiting students who, if their project is selected by the commission, are given free access to the school’s technical facilities and accommodation for a limited period (a few weeks at most). The Studio has exchange agreements with other French institutions such as the Académie de France in Rome (Villa Medici) and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as with a number of establishments abroad. Finally, it welcomes those studying for the Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique (DNSEP), as visiting students.

Le Fresnoy also possesses its own exhibition spaces and two cinemas, which are used mainly for activities linked to research and production.

Access Requirements

The admissions procedure is open to men and women candidates of any nationality, who have not yet passed their 36th birthday as of the 1st of January of the year in which they are applying.

Candidates are required to have attained a secondary school degree (French baccalauréat or its recognised equivalent), plus an additional four years of study, or artistic or professional experience.
