The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) is pleased to announce two upcoming residency programs:
LMCC/Workspace: 120 Broadway
-and-
Residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, France
LMCC/Workspace: 120 Broadway
Space donated by Silverstein Properties
Residency Dates: June 1–October 29, 2004
Deadline for application materials due at LMCC by 4:00 pm, April 21, 2004
Overview:
LMCC will continue its innovative site-oriented residency program LMCC/Workspace on the 8th floor of 120 Broadway in space donated by Silverstein Properties. Like its former location at the landmark Woolworth Building and LMCC’s World Views residency program in the World Trade Center, as well as the New Views residencies in the World Financial Center and DUMBO, Brooklyn, this program encourages an artistic/political/theoretical consideration of location and context and continues LMCC’s mission to position artists in lower Manhattan, create ties between the arts and business communities, and support the careers of artists in all fields.
120 Broadway occupies an entire city block between Cedar and Pine Streets and its neo-Renaissance façade stretches 40-stories. Designed by Ernest R. Graham and completed in 1915, the building is now a National and City Historic Landmark, and is known as the Equitable Building. Originally built to accommodate 13,000 workers daily, if measured by internal volume, it had the largest internal capacity of any office building in the world until 1931 when the Empire State Building was completed. Interior architectural details include a massive through-block entrance lobby with elegantly restored vaulted, coffered ceilings and six miles of marble-floored corridors throughout the building.
The Equitable Life Assurance Society was the first American business to build its own corporate headquarters and put its name on it. The current building replaced an 1870 structure that was destroyed by fire in 1912. A unique figure in architectural history, the Equitable building was the last high-rise to be built without setbacks. At the time of its construction, the height and bulk of the building cast a shadow so large that public outcry led to New York City’s pioneering 1916 Zoning Resolution. Today, 120 Broadway is one of Downtown’s signature buildings located in the heart of Lower Manhattan. The LMCC/Workspace studios on the 8th floor include views of lower Broadway, Trinity Church and the former World Trade Center site.
The studios are NOT open to the public; to view images of the building, visit http://www.silversteinproperties.com/120broadway.htm
What the residency offers:
LMCC/Workspace: 120 Broadway is open to emerging and mid-career artists working in all disciplines including painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation and new media. Artists must be living within reasonable distance from the studios during the residency term. There is no live space.
The residency offers the following:
• 5-month long residency session;
• Access to the studios 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Studio space is approximately 250sqf. Each studio is partitioned without a door. Studios have minimal facilities;
• A small stipend;
• Access to other LMCC services including workshops and professional development programs, and discounts to art magazines and training classes;
• Opportunities to present works to curators, critics, arts professionals, and the general public. LMCC organizes public programs each session, including a weekend-long Open Studio event at the close of the residency. Artists will be asked to make informal presentations of their work and to actively participate in public programs. Over the past five years over 15,000 visitors have attended LMCC’s artist residency events.
Artists retain proprietary rights to all work created while in residence. LMCC reserves the right to distribute video footage and reproduce images from the studios and of works produced in residence for publicity purposes connected with LMCC/Workspace: 120 Broadway and for publication including the LMCC website. LMCC reserves the right to suspend residency privileges to artists who do not appropriately use the studio environment.
The selection process:
Twelve artists will be selected for each cycle by a panel of arts professionals, artists, and LMCC staff. Decisions are based on artistic merit, career stage, proposed projects or ideas, and how their work and proposals/ideas might relate to the environment of lower Manhattan. Preference will be given to artists with flexible and active practices who currently are without studios. Work must not distract or obstruct other residents in the studio or building tenants nor require heavy machinery, noisy equipment, or major construction. This opportunity is only available to artists who have NOT been served by past LMCC residency programs. For a list of past jurors, please visit www.lmcc.net
Notification:
Please do not call or email to inquire about results. Artists selected will be notified by phone early to mid May, 2004.
See Instruction Section for application requirement. LMCC’s artist residency and exhibition programs are made possible with support from Silverstein Properties, Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation, Con Edison, JPMorgan Chase, Jerome Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, American Express and the many individuals who participated in the charity auction of photographs by Annie Leibovitz in the recent Rewarding Lives exhibition, and founding support from the New York Mercantile Exchange Charitable Foundation. Workspace is part of the broad range of services and support LMCC provides to artists and arts organizations across Manhattan, made possible, in part, with generous public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.
