CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
*outside in
*emerging expressions, interventions and participation in public space
*june 14th-15th @ röda sten, göteborg, sweden

In recent years, emerging technologies and policies have transformed notions
of public space. Mobile phones, surveillance systems and electronic barriers
affect how we spend our time, where we go and how we express ourselves. What
are the new perceptions of our cities and public spaces? What are aesthetic,
cultural and social implications? What is the impact on creative practices,
technology development and civic stakeholders? What are the emerging tactics
and processes for public engagement? What are the opportunities for
expression, intervention and participation? ‘outside in’ is a forum for
involving new voices, media and practices in a discourse about the use of
public space.

Over 2 days, ‘outside in’ will promote reflection, participation and action
in public space. Featured will be major international voices in public art
and graffiti, design and architecture, activism and urban planning, social
sciences and politics. Combining presentations, panel discussions, and
participatory workshops, symposium activities are intended to engage people
from a wide variety of disciplines in sharing and creating together.
Accepted submissions will be published in symposium proceedings and all
attendees will contribute to a public exhibition during the symposium. We
invite participation from designers, artists, musicians, sociologists,
activists, theoreticians, policy-makers, community workers, educators … and
everyone concerned with access, design, and use of public space today!

WORKSHOP DETAILS:
We now invite submissions for Outside In workshops!

The symposium format is a unique blend of presentation and participation
styles in order to involve a wide spectrum of voices and expertise in
creative exchange - in the morning of each day will be prominent invited
speakers with keynote presentations and open panel discussions. In the
afternoons, presenters and participants alike will join in workshop formats,
which combine less formal presentations with hands-on activity to engage and
involve a wide spectrum of disciplines, creative voices, and practitioners
in discussing and creating together. Each workshop will be guided by 2-3
people and will be 4-6 hours long, spread over both afternoons of the
two-day symposium.

Please note that the only category for submission to Outside In is in the
workshops! A printed publication from the symposium will feature outstanding
workshop submissions and all workshop outcomes. In addition, all workshop

Library of Congress conservation science fellowships, deadline May 15

Nielsen & Bainbridge To Sponsor Science Fellowships at the Library of Congress

The Nielsen & Bainbridge Corporation, a leading manufacturer of products to preserve art work, will sponsor a fellowship in conservation science at the Library of Congress. The 12-month fellowship will begin in the fall of 2004 and offer a $35,000 stipend.

"We are delighted to have an opportunity to partner with Nielsen & Bainbridge on this important research endeavor and look forward to how the results can help the Library of Congress and libraries everywhere preserve their book, paper and film collections," said Associate Librarian for Library Services Deanna Marcum. "The Library's pioneering research into the aging of paper has influenced an entire generation of preservation professionals, and this research will continue to build on that tradition."

The goal of the fellowship, located in Library Services, Preservation Directorate, Research and Testing Division, will be to conduct research into the effects of zeolites (molecular sieves) on the long-term stability of library materials and to develop practical library applications for this technology. An important element of the fellowship involves working closely with scientists from the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles who have conducted important research into zeolites.

Individuals interested in applying for the fellowship should submit a cover letter describing their interest in this opportunity, a resume that outlines pertinent experience and the names of three references who can attest to their qualifications. Applications should be sent to Mark Roosa, Director for Preservation, Library of Congress, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, DC 20540-4500. Applications received by May 15, 2004, will be given first consideration.

The Library of Congress has one of the most extensive preservation programs for library materials in the world. Each year the Library's preservation staff provides preservation treatment for approximately 500,000 items from a collection of nearly 128 million items in all formats. The Library's Preservation Directorate, consisting of four divisions and two special programs, has been a world leader in developing the profession of library preservation, and many innovative treatments have been developed in its laboratories over the years.

Exit Art calls for proposals about the Presidency, deadline June 15

THE PRESIDENCY
Call For Proposals
Due June 15, 2004
THE PRESIDENCY is scheduled to open in September 2004

The office of the President of the United States is one of the most visible positions in the world. The President symbolizes not only the characteristics and abilities of the nation, but also the substantial power that influences world and domestic affairs. The President governs our country, oversees our government, impacts our lives, and shapes our future.

We are asking artists to put into a visual balance or a visual feeling their concept of the presidency. The president is the body of the nation. Who is this individual who every 4 or 8 years changes? How does that change the image the country has of itself? How does it affect how other countries see us?

Who is your ideal president? Who runs the country? What is the structure of the government? What is the role of the cabinet? How and by whom is the president elected? What can we do to control that power? Is the presidency a symbol more than the person, a portrait of the power of the country? This exhibition is about knowing the rules of government, interpreting them and giving our opinions.

Proposals may be for work in any medium. Please submit a narrative (maximum 500 words) describing your project idea; a sketch of the proposed project; a resume; and documentation of your previous work (10-20 slides or images on CD, or a 3 to 5 minute VHS NTSC video or DVD). Please include a self addressed stamped envelope for the return of your work. Exit Art is not responsible for returning works submitted without a SASE.

Exit Art will notify you if your work has been selected.
Please do not call Exit Art to check on the status of your proposal.

Submit your proposal to:
Exit Art
