Memefest 2004 Visual Arts competition guidelines now available at
www.memefest.org

Blogs, town halls, and smart mobs. Seems everywhere you turn these
days people are speaking up. The silhouettes in the audience are
grabbing those microphones and claiming a little "I'm Mad As Hell"
time. No wonder then that designers and artists and visual
communicators of all stripes are wading into the fray and lending
their talents to the great collective push to reclaim the soapbox.

This year, Memefest wants to explore the motivations, the methods,
and the particular madness of designers who pass up cash and glory in
order to spend their free time promoting social movements.

To that end, the 2004 Visual Arts Competition is seeking
politically-engaged design and! visual work from artists, animators,
graphic designers and multimedia manipulators. Deadline for
submissions is May 20th 2004. Get the details at
www.memefest.org.

A little background...

Memefest is the International Festival of Radical Communications.
It's goal is to encourage Design, Communications, and Sociology
students -- most of whom are being groomed for careers in advertising
-- to turn their talents against the hand that may end up feeding
them. Students are challenged to submit visual work, multimedia
pieces and essays which grapple with market culture or try to
redirect communications strategies towards the creation of positive
social change.

There is also a special category open to non students as well. Check
Beyond here

The submitted works are then commented on and judged by a panel that
includes leading radical thinkers, visual artists, and
commu!nications professionals from around the globe. Memefest occurs!
almost 100% online and last year our virtual gallery was filled up
with 250 entries from 26 countries.

Memefest crawled out of Slovenia's academic and artistic mix in 2002
as a response to the country's cultural environment. Having been
exposed to concentrated doses of branding and commercial information
over the decade since their country embraced capitalism, the founders
of Memefest decided it was time to make some space for a critical
look at the beast that has been running wild. Since this time, the
crew that puts Memefest together has been growing, picking up media
malcontents in Canada through Adbusters Media Foundation, and around
the world through its website,
www.memefest.org.

The deadline for submissions is May 14th.

Here is the call:

Screenshots and Audio Effects; Electronic Events 2005

Doreen Maloney, University of Kentucky, and Rachel Clarke, California State University, Sacramento; mail to: Doreen Maloney, 207 Fine Arts, UK, Lexington, KY 40506 and to Rachel Clarke, Department of Art, CSU, Sacramento, Sacramento, CA 95819

Video art has been used as a conceptual, self-reflexive tool to examine society, culture, and media hegemonies for over 40 years. Video art moves about walls in flowing digital paintings and confronts us like a voice in installations. Similarly, sonic sculptures draw us through gallery spaces, inviting our attention and participation. This panel encourages artists who work with video and/or sound to discuss the relationship of their art to aesthetics, content and technology. Presenters could address: What strategies do artists using video and sound now adopt? How does the public assess the artistic quality of a form that represents entertainment and cheap reproduction? How do we talk about the shared conceptual space between sound, installation and video art? The panel invites proposals from artists, theorists and art historians. Unusual formats are encouraged.

You can submit your proposals electronically to both Rachel Clarke and Doreen Maloney at the following addresses:

dmalone@uky.edu
rclarke@csus.edu

Proposals need to be:

1. one to two pages double-spaced proposal and a cover letter.
2. CV
3. videotapes, dvd's, etc. sent to chairs at the mailing address
4. a stamped, self-addressed postcard for confirmation that the materials have been received
5. CAA membership status

Please post to other related lists.

Announcing TeAda Productions 3rd Annual New Performance Development Lab and
Festival SEARCH for this year's artists. TEADA WORKS is about the artistic
process. This annual festival offers artists a rare opportunity to work
intensively and collaboratively to develop new performance works through
workshops, rehearsals and labs (performance workout sessions). Audiences

both artistic form and cultural understanding. Audiences can participate by
attending the Open Rehearsals and Talk-Back sessions at Angel’s Gate

consecutive “Best Bet” recommendations from the Los Angeles Times. In 2002,
TeAda Productions was also awarded a “Best of LA” recognition from the LA
Weekly. The 2004 TEADAWORKS Festival will be a continuation of this
provocative artistic event informing the audiences about multi-cultural
issues while pushing the boundaries of performance art, dance, theater,
spoken word and both cultural and artistic hybridity. TEADAWORKS artists are

The TEADAWORKS Artist Manifesto:
1) Reckless experimentation and miscegenation of multiple art forms
2) Fearless tackling of personal, political, global and diasporic issues
3) Collaboration and commitment to challenging each other as artists and
audience members.

Founded by Artistic Director Leilani Chan in 1995, TEADA PRODUCTIONS is a
multi-cultural non-profit organization whose mission is to enrich the
repertoire of contemporary work created and performed by artists of color
through creation, development, presentation, and touring of
interdisciplinary performance/theatre projects. It serves as a channel to
educate audiences about controversial multi-cultural issues and recognize
the importance of underserved communities. All artistic presentations deal
with cultural and political issues most urgent to their communities. Issues
previously explored include: multi-racial identity, sexual
orientation/homophobia, struggles with immigrant and non-immigrant
communities of color and much more.

TeAda Productions has been supported by the California Arts Council, Los
Angeles County Arts Commission, City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs

Somerset, United Kingdom

Somerset Film and Video
CONDUCT - digital interventions into rural environments

Three digital arts residencies
http://www.theengineroom.net/conduct.htm
Our intentions
To heighten the profile of digital arts in rural Somerset by introducing digital/interventionist artists into three locations, by facilitating creative responses from the host communities and by setting in place a supportive framework for future work.
Somerset Film and Video (SFV) aim to develop a sustainable digital arts practice across Somerset and to examine the value and relevance of digital media in rural environments.

The project
Three Digital Arts Residencies

Somerset has strong craft and performance arts communities, but there is comparatively little contemporary digital work.
We are seeking three digital artists with an ability to innovate and challenge.
Each artist will be placed in one of three Somerset regions, they will be expected to generate a new piece of work(s) in response to the locale that addresses and/or explores the relevance of digital media in rural environments.
After creating and exhibiting (or performing, or installing..) the work they will be expected to facilitate a creative response to their work from the local community.
While seeking artists with a public art track record and an enthusiasm for working collaboratively, we especially welcome applications from artists with cross-discipline practice. We will not recruit those who tread the more derivative paths of community practice. We will favour those artists who share our recognition that digital art does not only mean work that uses computers.
Each residency will in addition have an attached bursary placement for an emergent local artist to work alongside the lead practitioner.
The lead artists will receive a fee of L3000 payable in 3 stages, with a commitment of approx 24 days over a 3 month period expected from each selected artist. Equipment and technical support will be provided by the Engine Room and additional equipment budgets will be negotiable.

Submission Guidelines:

:Deadline for entries 1700 hours 19th April 2004
:Interviews for short-listed applicants 29th/30th April 2004
:Notification of selected artists 4th May
:First phase of project start 22nd /23rd May 2004
:Second residency July – September 2004
:Third residency September – November 2004

Entry requirements:

If you wish to make a submission please send :
- a brief (1 sheet of A4 max) explanation of why you feel digital media is relevant/irrelevant in rural environments.

\\international \ media \ art \ award 2004

Theme: inVISIBLE \\ art_science
www.swr.de/medienkunstpreis/en/...
With the announcement of this year’s competition theme, the \\international\media\art \award is attempting for the first time to explore and draw attention to a long overdue paradigm shift – namely, that in this age of apparatus-driven perception and the machine and media supported production of images, the monopoly on images no longer belongs to the world of art. Highly interesting and relevant imaging processes have also been developed by the world of science. This is the essence of what W.J.T. Mitchell terms the “pictorial turn“: the sciences have now also become creators of images ...

subject
The competition theme for 2004 is “inVISIBLE \\ art_science“.
Prizes will be awarded for artistic merit, independent image and sound expression, originality and creativity in the media specific handling and processing of the subject.

submission
Each entrant may submit up to two entries. Video entries should not be longer than 15 minutes each. Works already nominated in a previous video art award or media art award competition are excluded. There must be no advertising or promotional content in any entry. Entries will not be accepted from employees of the organizers. Entrance is free of charge. VHS tapes may be submitted to be viewed by the pre-selection jury. In the case of Internet projects, a precise technical specification is required. Video documentation must be submitted for projects involving installations.

Research grants

Artists, designers and theorist from all over the world who fit the researchers' profile are welcome to apply.
http://www.janvaneyck.nl/%7eapplication/
Grant
Every researcher receives a grant of the Jan van Eyck Academie. The annual grant amounts to EUR 8.840. The grant is paid in 13 installments of EUR 680. The grant will be indexed annually to compensate for the higher costs of living.

The academy estimates living expenses, including accommodation (on the basis of the Dutch standard for a minimal standard of living) at EUR 615 a month.
Compensation and/or assistance in finding additional financial means for living accommodation are offered as well.

Researcher’s profile
All researchers are required to have attained a level equivalent to a master’s degree, and preferably to have some years’ professional experience.
The objectives of the researchers and advising researchers are of primary significance to the programme at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Researchers are expected to establish the aims, methodologies and realisation of their projects.

Language
The Jan van Eyck is an international institute that welcomes artists, designers and theorists from all over the world. The languages of communication in the academy are English and Dutch. Researchers must have sufficient knowledge of English.

Departments
The Jan van Eyck contains three departments: Fine Art, Design and Theory. Candidates should state in their application which department they would like to join.

The selection of individual or collective research projects is carried out per department, per discipline. Candidates are asked to relate to a particular discipline. This does not necessarily mean the submitted proposal has to fit within the generally valid definition of the chosen discipline: it has everything to do with the independently formulated relationship to the discipline.

Research period
The academic year runs from January 1 till December 31.
Candidates can apply for a one or two year research period starting on January 1 each year.
It is also possible to apply for a different research period. In that case candidates must indicate the length of their desired research period. A time planning for their research project, stating when they would like to start and end their stay at the Jan van Eyck Academie, must be included in the application.
