ELSEWHERE, art processes re-invent Art contexts.
(interpret THE SPLACE speaking TO ITSELF)

Dear eyes right at origin,
Elsewhere Artist Collaborative, a conceptual artists space in
Greensboro, NC, is seeking journeypeople to pursue artistic
creations and criticism in a contextually interpreted and designed
environment.

Participating in a residency-like program, Journeypeople
will be provided access to a 12,000 sq. ft. converted thrift store and
haunted mansion (stuck in a locational palindrome). Artists are expected to integrate the plethora of 70 years of thrift resources: toys, furniture, books, clothing, fabric, etc. or their experience at Elsewhere into the content (subject or object) of their work. Elsewhere artists explore traditional and emerging media and media fusion, representational possibilities, and community/communication models.
Elsewhere’s non-commercial space is a constantly reflexive environment where artwork becomes the medium of expression between other members of the living installation. Located in Greensboro, NC’s small town, historical district, the experience of southern America offers a backdrop to Elsewhere’s conceptual, artistic and intellectual realm, which houses a gallery, orientation center, press office, studio, kitchen, performance venue, library, closet, lounge. Artists are encouraged to redesign space and its accompaniments (objects) for a contextual artistic experiment that can be as powerful as the works created within. Elsewhere seeks writers, musicians, painters, designers, and others to make-up the living art installation piece.

Toys are people too.

Journeypeople are needed to engage projects: spatial development and construction, documentation via still and video photography, fashion design, interior design, graphic design, magazine and newspaper publishing run via the press office, archiving, research, educational programming and design, and artistic pursuits in traditional and emerging art forms. After participating in the community for a week, Journeypeople will submit proposals for independent or collaborative projects. With a project underway, you will be given free rent (some utilities are requested), inexpensive meal options with the food co-operative, access to the seemingly infinite resources, customizable space within which to work, and involvement in a community of artists all speaking to and interacting in a post-modern thematic of Americana and re-application. Journeypeople will also be involved in the larger conceptual project which includes a functioning performance venue in addition to other community i!
nterfacing programs. Gallery and performance space will also be made available to journeypeople free of cost. Work becomes property of Elsewhere’s concept and contextual environment for a negotiated period of time. Nothing of the space leaves the space (objects function like a number set), however possibility exists for works to become part of a national collaborative show.

Those interested in the residency program or in booking a performance or art show should contact
George Scheer and/or Stephanie Sherman at wanderingzoo@mac.com or 336.549.5555. We will respond
with a brief application to gauge interest and experience. Elsewhere, a 501(c)3 organization, is funded in part by a grant from Greensboro’s United Arts Council. For more information, check out

Signed, the understated.

Call for entries Electrohype 2004 - the third Nordic biennial for
computer-based art.

Deadline May 31st 2004.

Electrohype is pleased to announce this call for entries for the
exhibition that will be a follow up to two previous exhibitions
Electrohype 2000 and 2002. The upcoming exhibition will be a large
scale and broad presentation of computer based and high tech art.

The exhibition Electrohype 2004 will be held at Malmo Konsthall, one
of the most beautiful exhibition spaces for art in Scandinavia. The
exhibition will be presented for eight weeks on 1700 square meters
(13 000 square feet). This gives us a unique opportunity to compile a
spacious exhibition that gives all works and installations good
conditions.

Our goal is to present an exhibition consisting of 15 - 20 works of
art. The concept of the Electrohype biennial is that it shall be a
Nordic exhibition but this does not exclude works by artists from
outside the Nordic region. To give the exhibition a broad perspective
we are usually working with a 60/40 model, 60 percent from the Nordic
region and 40 percent from the rest of the world.

Given the opportunity to present an exhibition in this large scale in
a space that reaches a large audience (235 000 visitors annually) we
have decided to choose the theme PERSPECTIVE for this exhibition.
This means that we will not only include newly produced works but
also look for artwork that draws a historical line for a rather young
art genre.

Important dates
Deadline for this call for entries may 31st, 2004
Exhibition opening November 27th 2004
Exhibition closing January 23rd 2005

What kind of art are we looking for?
Electrohype has since the start in 1999 focused on what we choose to
call computer based art. Art that runs of computers and utilizes the
capacity of the computer to mix various media, allow interaction with
the audience, or machines interacting with each others etc. in other
words art that can not be transferred to "traditional" linear media.
This might seem as a narrow approach but we have discovered that it
gives us a better focus on a genre that in no way is narrow.

We are not looking for "straight" video art (even if it is edited on
a computer) or still images rendered on computers and other material
that refers to more "traditional" media forms. Forms were the
traditional tools have been replaced with computers and software.

Practical
An online application form and a PDF form can be found on our website:
http://www.electrohype.org/2004/entrieinfo02.html

NOTE: Please do NOT send documentation material as attachments to
e-mail and do NOT send 8 pages CVs. Put your material online and send
us the url or ftp address or send us a CD in the mail. Please read
the form and follow the guidelines. We receive a large amount of
proposals and all of them are reviewed closely. To be able to do this
we ask you to follow this structure.

Financial
We are still working on the fundraising for the exhibition. We will
hopefully have final numbers sometime during this summer. We will
have to adjust the final selection of works for exhibition according
to the financial situation. This is unfortunate but it is also
necessary, art is beautiful but financial reality is harsh.

We will encourage everyone submitting material to look for
possibilities for local funding to help cover costs for transport,
travel and rent of technical equipment.

In previous exhibitions we have managed to keep a high level both in
artistic content and exhibition design, even on a modest budget. It
is therefore very important for us to avoid unpleasant surprises, so
please keep this in mind when filling out the various posts in the
form, especially when it comes to technical requirements, transport
weight etc.

We are looking forward to see new and interesting works of art.

Best regards from the Electrohype team.

Online and Web proposals for
Improbable Monuments
(Part of our upcoming Fall 2004 show, Monument Recall)

Monument Recall is an exhibition of work by artists who are
challenging ideas of what a 'monument' can be. Through scale,
material, point of view, location, subject, and concepts, work in
this exhibition challenges the conventional expectations of public
monuments in public spaces.

As part of this exhibition, we are looking for work in proposal form
only, to be exhibited online.

Submissions should include:
1. a description of your Improbable Monument
2. a visual rendering of the idea, in images, animation, digital video, etc.
3. a description of its purpose and function within the context of
improbable monument.
4. all current and pertinent contact information.

The ideas should not be restricted by materials, funds, and subject
matter or by any other practical considerations. Instead, we're
looking for grand visions of what monuments can be without regard to
the usual constraints. We are particularly interested in how ideas
can function specifically within the cyber realm,

All submissions should be available online or in Web-ready digital
files on a CD-ROM. If the work is already online, please send the
URL. Otherwise, send the CD-ROM to the address below. Please include
an Artist Statement & Vitae, as well as a self-addressed, stamped
envelope for the return of your materials. Mail the material to:

SF Camerawork

http://www.transition-media.com

The Transition Media Gallery is an online intermedia center for art. In an age of postmodernism and new media, art disciplines have merged and blurred lines that previously existed between media (painting, sculpture, etc.). Art is in a continual transitional state. The Transition Media Gallery is a document of that change and a symbol of that change. Based in Brooklyn, Transition Media makes specific efforts to reach out first to its New York community while always remaining open to the international community.

We host sound-as-art (experimental, creative, noise, sound poetry, etc.), text-as-art (hypertext, flash text, concrete, abstract, experimental poetry, etc.), and image-as-art (painting, photography, video art, installations, new media, etc.).

The Transition Media Gallery is using internet technology for the purpose of exhibiting art. The democratization of art is a dream realized through the internet. Galleries have sprung up and multiplied in numbers never before imagined. The unrecognized artist now has a chance to show their work to a worldwide audience without the traditional gallery system. The internet gallery also gives the viewer a chance to study and explore contemporary work in ways only previously dreamed. With major sites like rhizome.org, art-mine.com, artnet.com, ubu.com, and walkerart.org, art has proven that its transition to the new technologies is successful and continues to offer yet unrealized possibilities.

CALL FOR WORK
SUBMISSIONS DUE BY: JUNE 11, 2004

We are doing a call for work for a one evening art and music event, to be
held in a location in Times Square, New York City.

What is the theme of the show?
TAGTEAM. Because there‚s no „I‰ in art.

We're interested in what happens when two (or more) people from different
disciplines or different ways of working interact on a shared idea. We
want to explore how their individual methods correspond and clash,
cross-fertilize, provoke, or self-destruct, and how the working process
affects what physically comes out of that collaboration.

The collaborative art effort does not necessarily have to revere the
tagteam as magical/wonderful/larger than a single person, but we‚re
excited by it as a different way of working, a way of letting go of your
own working methods, and as a challenge.

You could be working together in the same space or half way around the
world. Or maybe you have a piece with a collaborative element (with
another person or with the audience) within a given project. Show us
what you've got.

What are we looking for?
All media, all genres: prints, paintings, photography, handmade books,
sculpture, installation, video, web, performance. Do you do something
else? Surprise us. We are seeking both projects that have already been
completed, and projects that WILL be completed by early July.

We are also offering a Residency Opportunity:
Three artist teams will be selected for a 2-week residency at the space,
for the 2 weeks leading up to the event. We are offering access to space
and tools to realize your tagteam project. Pitch us a proposal of what
you could do with it.

What else do we want?
If accepted for the show, you will also produce a series of small works
to be sold at the event. It should be a series of multiples or objects
that you can cheaply and easily reproduce within a 4 week time period, to
be sold for prices between $2 and $10.

These commissioned pieces don‚t necessarily have to be in the same medium
as your main piece, or even have anything to do with the exhibited work,
but,
-The pieces need to be in an edition of at least 30.
-Commissioned pieces must be completed by July 10th, 2004.

Examples from past show that people really seemed to like: stuffed
animals, accordian books with digital prints, cd‚s, pencil and ink
drawings, hand bound hardcover books, t-shirts, decorated boxes,
paintings on panel, mix tapes, silkscreened patches, sheets of stickers,
magnets.

Be creative, the more innovative it is, the more likely it is to sell.
It‚s really pretty open, go buck wild, and have fun.

How do you apply?
To submit work for review, please send a description of your work, and
any pertinent resume/cv/artist statement/websites or places your work
appears online IN THE BODY TEXT OF YOUR EMAIL to spitinfo@mailas.com
DO NOT SUBMIT IMAGES. Any emails with attachments will be discarded.
Once your application is successfully reviewed, we will contact you if we
need any further information and/or images.
SUBMISSIONS DUE BY: JUNE 11, 2004.
