OMADS + RESIDENTS
A forum for visitors in the arts: making connections, supporting networks,
setting up meetings

RAM-Radioartemobile and Nomads & Residents

A collection and a traveling archive of audio-artworks, a database on the
Internet, and a center for different ways of listening

Proposal open to all artists who work with sound

Radioartemobile (RAM) and Nomads & Residents (N&R) kickoff an audio-artwork
database.

All artists who have worked or are working with sound are invited to send an
artwork on audio CD, DVD, or on a vinyl record. The RAM headquarters in Rome,
via Conte Verde 15, will function as a gathering and a listening point and as
an archive for all materials received. It will be open to public. Artworks will
be gradually posted in the section "database" of the Radio website
www.radioartemobile.it.

RAM is also the first location of a traveling archive initiated by Nomads &
Residents. The second public presentation will be in San Francisco, at Southern
Exposure, in the spring of 2005.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING AUDIO-WORKS

- unlimited subject matter;
- each CD, DVD or vinyl record must contain only one track;
- time is unrestricted (except that of the technical features of the chosen
device);
- each audio-work must be entered with a written indication of: the name of
the author, a title, duration, and an e-mail contact address;
- the sender can mention any requirement needed to listen to the audio-work
(type of loudspeakers, stereo system, headphones, etc.). These indications will
be taken into consideration each time RAM would chose the piece for installing
it, within the technical and logistic features available;
- RAM and N&R cannot assure a complete accessibility for the works that
include a primary visual factor;
- the sender is responsible for mailing costs of submission;
- the works will not be returned to the senders.

Radioartemobile and Nomads & Residents will take the best care of the entered
works, but cannot take liability for accidental damage, loss or theft. For this
reason we suggest to send two copies of each material. RAM and N&R will archive
all sound works that fit the above mentioned requirements and will present them
to the public.

Lorenzo Benedetti, Riccardo Giagni and Cesare Pietroiusti will listen to all
the entries and will gradually post them in the web-site database. In turn -to
the discretion of the curators- some artworks will be displayed in the RAM
headquarters in Rome with the aim of offering the public also the possibility
to explore different ways of listening to audio-works. The database will
gradually increase the number of contributions and will be presented to the
public at regular appointments. The first public presentation is scheduled for
mid October 2004.

Deadline for first submission is September 1, 2004.
Next appointment: Southern Exposure, San Francisco, spring 2005

Please send the material to:
RAM Radioartemobile
Via Conte Verde 15
00185 Roma - Italy

Introduction:
-------------
The Budget Gallery organizes gallery style art shows in the unused public spaces found in urban areas. From empty walls to empty buildings, the Budget Gallery uses any space that is available and highly visible during the day. Space is often prepared with white paint and signage so work will be as professionally presented as possible. Pieces will be labeled with the artists name, materials used, and asking price for the work. We host opening receptions that are attended by hundreds of people forming a sort-of block party garage sale style art show right on the sidewalk.

All pieces not sold by the end of the the opening reception stay up for the course of the week with a price and contact phone number for interested buyers. The gallery is in co-opted public space with no security. Any work not sold at the reception can be sold, stolen, or vandalized during the rest of the show. Artists submit work with these inevitabilities in mind. Most work sells at the opening, but some is always left. The Budget Gallery considers vandalism a form of artistic collaboration, and theft is the highest honor of the Budget Gallery.

-----------------
Call for entries:
-----------------
All work that meets guidelines will be accepted for the show - in line with the Budget Gallery's belief that any art is better than the commercial advertising which typically dominates public spaces. Work will either be purchased, stolen, or vandalized. Artists are encouraged to make pieces for this show with these inevitabilities in mind. Ideal pieces should catch the eye, capture the imagination, and invite extended viewing from passing crowds. Art that addresses the issues of public space are especially encouraged, but again, all work will be accepted.

Artists are encouraged to use the Budget Gallery as an opportunity to show work they may not normally present in other venues. Masterpieces are not required. Work in media other than the artists primary media is encouraged, along with older pieces, works in progress, studies, and so on.

Work should be priced to sell to the general public. All pieces not sold at the opening will be left on the wall for 1 week, after which they will be placed elsewhere. Those interested in your piece will be instructed to remove it, take it home, and contact the gallery regarding payment. Commission is arbitrary, optional, and decided by the artist. Work will not be returned.

-----------
The Theme:
-----------

Use the theme if it inspires you. If it doesn't, find something that inspires you and use that.

The theme is "Success!" What does success mean to you? Personal success. Financial success. Spiritual success. Physical success. What is success in times of war? What is success in November? What is success in your art? What is success in your family or career? How do your ideas of success compare with others? To what they were 5 years ago? 25 years ago?

-----------
Guidelines:
-----------

1. All work must haver our entry form attached.
2. Work must be able to be hung on a wall or fence.
- It must be mounted on something hard - clipped to a piece of cardboard is ok, just no loose paper.
3. Please avoid pieces larger than 40 inches by 40 inches or any piece heavier than 25 pounds. If your piece exceeds these dimensions, contact the Budget Gallery before submitting your work.
4. Please deliver art with your preferred mounting hardware supplied. If no mounting hardware is supplied, work will be hung in the most convenient way possible (Starting with wood screws, then staples, twine, or tape).
6. Please submit a slide or digital photo of work (if possible) for our website.
7. Work must be received by July 24th , 2004

-----------
Submission:

Please email where@budgetgallery.org for submission address.

On an ongoing basis, a collective of video artists meet once a month for Sunday afternoon salon discussions, critiques, and the viewing of submissions. DRAIN- An online journal for contemporary art and culture
(www.drainmag.com)

Call for Papers - Remote Control
Issue #02

ŒWhat your data body says about you is more real than what you say about
yourself. The data body is the body by which you are judged in society,
and the body which dictates your status in the world.‚
Critical Art Ensemble

Remote Control maybe considered a defining feature of the
inter-relationship between manifestations of cultural control exerted via
the Internet and recent premises in the physical and conceptual parameters
of experimental digital art.

This upcoming issue of DRAIN aims to question the relationship between
local community action and globalization, and to consider that throughout
anti-globalization protests, the Internet and cyberspace play a vital
role. Furthermore, strategies for dealing with these situations through
art activism and other techniques on the Internet, such as telematics,
have proven critical.

DRAIN would like to invite essays and reviews that respond to the themes
of globalization and protest, power and cyberspace, surveillance culture,
art activism, cultural imperialism, and Œdigital third worlds‚.

Authors Guidelines
Deadline for submission: July 10th(extemdded!)
Launch Date:July 20th

All feature essays are to be no more than 4,000 words. Drain requests
authors submitting feature essays for consideration, to use the footnote
system and to send the document (along with a brief biographical note) as
an email attachment saved as a Word file. A minimum of three images and a
maximum of eight are to accompany essays unless pure theory.

Reviews are not to exceed 1,500 words. Reviews are to be sent as an email
attachment saved as a Word file. A minimum of one image and a maximum of
four are to accompany each review unless a book review where no image is
required. Reviews can cover any art form: fine art, moving image, sound,
book, or performance. Although the lead essays should address the specific
theme of each issue, the reviews could be more general. It is the author‚s
responsibility to seek copyright for images. Images are to be sent as
j-peg files. All attachments are to be titled with the author‚s surname.

Drain is a peer-reviewed on-line journal. It is published quarterly in
collaboration with the independent artist collective Aquaspace with text
formatted for printing in Adobe Acrobat PDF files. Its editorial policies
are the responsibility of the Editors-in-Chief and the Editorial Board.

Editorial board: Avantika Bawa, Celina Jeffery, and Adrian Parr
Site Design: Carla Diana
Management: Avantika Bawa and Michelle Barczak

ABOUT DRAIN
General Guidelines
The journal seeks to promote lively and well-informed debate around theory
and praxis. Each issue of Drain will have a specific concept that it
explores. We are especially keen to publish pieces that connect the
conceptual framework of each issue to broader themes such as
globalization, ethics, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and capitalism. As
such we welcome creative responses to contemporary culture, as well as
written work by practitioners in the field of culture. Our primary mission
is to provide an open environment where a variety of creative activities
can be explored with a combination of sensitivity and rigor.

Call for Submissions - Video Dictionary

VideoDictionary is a project about language and moving images. It is a new

venture of TheVideoArtFoundation after the development and presentation of

25hrs in Barcelona. The aim of the VideoDictionary is to make a collection

the dictionary. It will reflect about the relationship of objects and words,

and the capability of moving images to construct meaning. The videos are

made by a wide variety of video artists from different countries and

language speakers using video in its work. Videos should not contain words

Hi all-

I am going to personally host four small contests (two weeks each) to see who
can rip and remix from TV/film/etc ... and I need some ideas for the four
subjects/themes.

For example, "Ronald Reagan" may be one of the subjects ... the contestants
would have to rip and remix anything they could find related to the ex-prez

Another subject/theme may be ... "prescription drug commercial
advertisements". Hence, contestants would have to rip and remix from
commercials like Viagra, Claritin, etc

Another theme may be that of a particular Film or Film Director.

Another may be a particular corporate brand

Or possibly a particular phrase such as "I have a dream" or "United we stand".

So if there is any subject that you would like to have ripped and dissected
then let me know.

Check out the website for more info ... www.mediatrips.com

Pace University, NY seeks Digital Artist in Residence, deadline Oct. 1, 2004

Digital Artist-in-residence
The Pace Digital Gallery and The Center for Advanced Media (CAM) is pleased to offer an artist's residency beginning Spring 2005. This is a pilot program. We are offering a digital artist the opportunity to work with CAM's resources to produce a new artwork.

Site
The Center for Advanced Media (CAM) Is a collaborative research environment located in Pace University's School of Computer Science and Information Systems in downtown New York City. Its goal is to develop computer-oriented, human-centered systems that help people solve problems by transforming the way they experience the world and the way they collaborate within it. CAM is founded on Pace University's collective faculty experiences in software engineering, human-computer interaction, information visualization, and computer graphics. These computing fields are fundamentally human-centric, with design as the common approach to complex representational problems. Because visual artists, musicians, and writers possess different perceptual, design, and representational skills, CAM is interested in augmenting its computer science foundations with participants who work in the arts and humanities to broaden the research and educational mix.

The Pace University‚s Digital Gallery is an outgrowth of CAM's conceptual foundation, executed as the combined initiative between CAM and Fine Arts Department. Its goal is to foster the creation and understanding of digital art for the benefit of Pace University and the surrounding community. It furthers Pace University‚s commitment to educational excellence, diversity, and civic involvement by exhibiting curated work of leading digital artists, as well as the work of Pace faculty and students. It sponsors lectures and symposia on digital art, and supports publication of materials for its documentation and promotion.

The Digital Gallery‚s first show entitled Digital Downtown opened to rave reviews in Spring 2003. Since then it has co-hosted a Pan-American collaborative performance event titled Accélerateur, and an installation of video works entitled Screen Kiss. Its current online exhibition eBay: Buy or Sell or Buy, will run through September 2004. An evening of artists' talks was organized and catalogue issued in conjunction with the eBay exhibition.

Residency
The artist-in-residence will have the opportunity to work with CAM faculty and students whose research includes computer graphics, virtual reality, image processing, human-computer interaction, and collaborative computing. This work is supported by technology that includes a virtual reality display system, networked PCs, multi-display and plasma display systems, projectors, video cameras, scanners, etc.

The artist-in-residence will be expected to produce a new artwork during their tenure at Pace (January 30 - May 10, 2005), which will remain the property of the artist. Pace Digital Gallery will produce, with the artist, a printed brochure about the work completed in residence, and will expect the artist to give a presentation of their work to the Pace Community and the general public. Pace Digital Gallery will also feature the artist on our website, and in gallery space at Pace University. There will be a modest stipend, but no living accommodations are provided. Access to equipment will be Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 6:00PM, and Saturday from 8:00AM to 3:00PM.

Pace University affirms its commitment to the principle of equal Career Opportunities as stated in Federal, State, and local laws, which prohibits discrimination because of sex, race, age, ethnicity, marital or domestic partnership status, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, disability or veteran.

Artists will be chosen by a jury comprised of the gallery directors, as well as a local artist and curator.

===============CALL FOR PAPERS===============

Acoustic Space, special issue of on Trans-Culture Mapping

http://rixc.lv
http://locative.net

=====================================

The RIXC Centre for New Media Culture seeks manuscripts for its
upcoming Acoustic Space journal, to be published for the 7th
international Art+Communication festival in Riga Latvia, October 1-3
2004. Now in its 5th edition, the Acoustic Space print journal, is a
forum for net-radio and new media artists broadly interested in the
idea of making visible the invisible. This year's issue, Trans-Culture
Mapping, will focus, in the context of European expansion, on ideas of
locality, cartography and the politics of open-systems.

=====================================

The ability to visualize a space relates to its domination where
borders are maintained by a legions of state cartographers, enforcing
hierarchical regimes of power from the level of the biological to the
geopolitical.

Against the US-led 'coalition of the willing' of which Latvia counts
itself a part --informed, as it is, by the US Strategic Command's
objective of "Full Spectrum Dominance" (that seeks the unilateral total
domination of land, sea, air, cyberspace and outer space)- this
publication is interested in projects that re-appropriate mapping as a
means cultural expression.

The publication seeks to offer a space of exchange for grassroots
activists and new media practitioners who are critically exploring
ideas of locality, in response to the continental European (and global)
process of "normalization".

=====================================

Sub-themes

Locative Media
Governments and corporations worldwide are constructing a geo-rectified
real-time digital-double of earth-systems, which, with the advent of
the mobile Internet and the ever increasing ubiquity of
location-sensing technologies, allow for urban space to become
conceived of as a site for digital media and, potentially, emergent
social organization. Yet, beneath the manifold promise of collaborative
cartography, is the harsh reality of 'total information awareness'. Can
locative media escape its own axiomatic system?

Spectrum Ecology
Advances in wireless internet technology are changing not only how
people connect to the internet but also how they approach the wireless
spectrum itself. This section seeks to map how ideas of use and
ownership are being analyzed and reconsidered in this environment.

Tactical Cartography
Social softwares have become a means of mobilizing people without
having to go to the "Media" to convey a message. Problems, however,
persist in making the leap into more mainstream circuits of power. How
can maps be used both to help legitimize certain "fringe"
Internet-debates and throw light on the nature of multinational
capitalism?

Endocolonization
In the context of a "War on Terror", global borders are being mapped
_within_, in a battle for "hearts and minds". While we may celebrate
aspects of European integration, smaller States must also be cautious
of the wholesale adoption of various monoculturing techniques that
threaten their local diversities. How does "the local" assert itself
while at the same time avoiding becoming reactionary and
fundamentalist.

=====================================

Proposals and inquiries regarding submissions should be made to Marc
Tuters and Rasa Smite

We encourage you to submit documents of various lengths an forms, so
long as they related to one of the sub-themes and display an internal
consistence.

While we ask for documents in English we actively encourage submissions
from non-Anglophones, especially Eastern Europeans.

Please submit documents as RTF's and any images separately in a high
resolution format.

Deadline for final, full paper submissions: August 1st
