Four short comments (spam/nyc/no rnc/no rnc):

1.

My apologies to the 50 or so subscribers who got emailbombed by the calls and opps list last weekend. After much research and many emails with my hosting provider's admins the conclusion is that the email was simply too long! apparently, emails over a certain size confuse certain mail servers, which cause them to time out; thinking that it didnt get through, it tries to send the email again. (To all the server admins on the list, please forgive the oversimplification and butchering of the techie details)

FYI, the sub/unsub web interface is up again. http://theredproject.com/calls

2.

My thanks to the kind people who emailed me back about apartments. I was able to find one in Greenpoint, and I am in the process of moving in. You can send all future correspondence and contributions to Michael Mandiberg, 50 Meserole Ave #2R, Brooklyn NY 11222. Also, as I get set up, my Internet access (and time available) will be intermittent, so there might be a short break in the calls list.

MAKE NICE is the fifth edition of White Box’s annual summer series, Six Feet Under. As in previous years,  SIX FEET UNDER: MAKE NICE consists of exhibitions mounted by critics and curators who will take possession of White Box’s exhibition space for the duration of one week each.  This year the topic specifically addresses the Republican National Convention, to be staged in New York from August 29 through September 2, 2004.  The premise is that the curators, and the artists they select, respond to an ad-campaign featuring Ed Koch in which he tells New Yorkers: "The Republicans are coming, Make Nice."

Here is an urgent, NO RNC call for protest work:

----

Immediate CALL for time-based visual media speaking
out against the Bush Administration.

Transparent Transformations:
Big Picture
Windows

Two BIG second story windows facing
23rd Street at Avenue of the Americas. Beginning
with the Republican Convention until the elections on
November 2, Transparent Transformations will become
projection screens for images and messages of
deliverance--from the Bush Administration's assault on
democracy.

These windows will be a private
speaker's podium projecting into public space.
Say what you have to, say what you can--at a busy
intersection only 12 blocks away from the Republican
Convention. Count on considerable exposure for your
images and messages.

We are calling for slide-shows, poetic narratives,
visual essays, flash manifestos, tele-novelas,
power-point presentations, animations, statistical
graphics, anecdotes, allegories, raps, rants, chants,
and other imaginative forms using any combination of
text and image. We expect to mobilize two screens
(window projections) at the same time.

Creative constraints:
No Sound: Text and Image Only
Pieces must be visual or text-based as there will not
be any sound.
Six minutes maximum.

No Computer? If you don't have digital tools, you can
still submit a text of your own, or suggest a text in
the public domain. We will arrange to compose your
text into a scrolling graphic, as time allows.

Don't equivocate; throw something together! Find
something from the archives!! Dig shit out of the
hijacked Constitution!!

The deadline is immediate: we will begin projections
for the first night of the Republican Convention and
continue until the elections.

entertain, inform, enlighten, complain, puke it out,
argue, convince, present evidence, suggest new
possibilities.

Deadline: Ongoing until Halloween
