FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Bush Poll
Speaking to the George Bushes of the United States
http://Bushpoll.com

There are 153 persons named George Bush in the United States phone directory. 2 persons named George Bush are current and former presidents of the United States. The Bush Poll surveyed them in order to determine their political cohesiveness, their polarization over political issues, and their potential reflection of an American people divided over their Presidential representation.

Are the George Bushes Dying?

One of the interesting results of the poll was the findings about the age of the George Bushes of the United States. Of the 47 George Bushes we spoke to, 12, or 26% were too ill to speak, bedridden, or deceased. This trend is mirrored in the age statistics of the healthy George Bush population, where 83% of all George Bushes are over the age of 55. Reflecting their age demographics, the George Bushes have an extremely high turnout ratio, with nearly 90% having voted in 2000, and the same number planning on voting in 2004.

“My ethnicity is I am a Christian," George L. Bush, Lexington, KY

Equally interesting is the uniformity of ethnicity, with 89% of all George Bushes identifying as White. The remaining 11% either identified as "American" or "Christian." There were no George Bushes who identified as Black or African American, Latino, Asian, American Indian, Pacific Islander.

Low Approval, but High Support

The George Bushes generally reflect the greater population in their political party, approval of the President’s job performance (55%), the war in Iraq (50%), and his ability to relate to the average American (38%). Yet they support him in much higher numbers at the poll: 69% of the George Bushes of the United States voted for George W. Bush in 2000, and 66% are projected to vote for him in 2004. So why would this group break their party affiliations, and break with their own views, to vote for George W. Bush? Do they identify with him? Do they admire him? Does it make them happier to see a man with their name on the TV daily?

“No, he’s not like me,” George W. Bush, Jasper, TX

Despite this apparent identification of the George Bushes of the United States with the President, they are polarized over the idea that they are similar. When asked if they hold George W. Bush’s values, 67% Agree, 0% are neutral, and 33% disagree. Yet when asked if they are like George W. Bush, the George Bushes of the United States flip the other direction: only 22% agree, 17% are neutral, and 61% disagree. They identify with his values, but if they identify with him, they might loose their individuality.

“I've been picked on about it, but not judged. It is fun being George Bush.”
George D. Bush, Bonham TX

Nearly half of all of the George Bushes of the United States said they were pre-judged by others because of their name. Two out of three said that the other person had viewed them negatively. Despite this apparent loss of control over their own representation, 83% said that this did not undermine their sense of individuality. It is as if they are saying that to be one of the George Bushes of the United States you have to be resolute, ignore what others say, and be prepared to protect and defend your identity as your own, regardless of namesake.

Earth Rites: Imagination and Practice in Sci-Arts Eco-Cultures
University of Washington Bothell
May 19-21, 2005
Call for Proposals

Earth Rites: Imagination and Practice in Sci-Arts Eco-Cultures investigates
issues and practices involved in building sustainable eco-cultures through
the intentional engagement of both the sciences and the arts. The Earth
Rites conference will examine connections between sci-arts and local
communities and address how our sense of place, location, history, memory
and embodiment are made manifest in art-making and scientific practices. The
conference seeks to advance discussion and research on the productive
linkages between culture, science, art, and the environment and how these
connections emerge as viable eco-cultures.

Themes and Questions:
What defines 'environment'?
What are 'eco-cultures'?
What is environmental art practice? How can it engage, merge, or diverge
with and from sustainable scientific practice?
How is the inquiry process in science comparable to that of art making? How
can scientists and artists productively collaborate? What constitutes points
of intersection for scientific practice and art making?
How can critical conceptions of nature and culture inform contemporary
practice?
What cultural frameworks-economic, social, religious-have historically
influenced access to environmental resources?
How do the arts act as vehicles for civic engagement?
What are the intersections between transformational learning, community
leadership, art, and bioregionalism?
How can indigenous approaches guide these emerging practices and
relationships to the land?
How can current discussions in both aesthetics and science help us
understand some of the challenges of ecological restoration?
How are knowledge management systems integral to emerging sci-arts
eco-cultures?
What role does design and/or engineering play in relation to new
possibilities in sci-arts eco-cultures?
How can art, ecology, and spirituality help us create new paradigms for
community?

The location and environment of the host site are an important thread in the
fabric of the conference. Situated near a functioning wetland at the
University of Washington, Bothell, the venue is also part of the
Cedar/Sammamish watershed, Water Resource Inventory Area 8 in the Puget
Sound basin of Washington State, as well as part of the larger and
transnational Cascadia bioregion. Project organizers seek to cultivate
meaningful community responses locally and regionally, and explore and
expand upon relevant models of practice for the bioregion and beyond. We
invite scholars, community leaders, artists, adult learners, youth and
others to share ideas and practices that utilize traditional academic and
artistic methods, as well as non-traditional and indigenous approaches.

Formats:
" Individual Papers: 20-minute paper proposals that address issues of
sci-arts, environmental art, etc. Please submit a 300 to 500-word proposal
and biography.
" Roundtable: Discussions comprising four participants focusing on a
specific topic related to theory, organizational models or practice. Please
submit a 500-word proposal with qualifications and/or experience of all
participants.
" Performance: Presentation of short theatre, dance, spoken word, or other
pieces. Submit 300-word proposal, biography and additional information.
Please include length, required technical support if appropriate, number of
participants, etc.
" Workshops: Hands-on discussion. Please submit 300-word proposal,
biography and additional information. Please include time (up to 1.5 hours),
technical or other requirements, min/max number of participants, etc.
" Media Room: Display materials including videos, internet sites, CD ROMs,
DVDs, fine art, poster presentations. Please submit a 100 to 300-word
proposal or sample, and biography
" Outdoor Exhibition: Temporary site exhibits. Please submit 100 to
300-word proposal or sample, and biography
Deadline for submission of proposals: October 30, 2004

D4D’s FINAL TRIP TO THE BATTLEGROUNDS OF OHIO

Join Downtown for Democracy as we make our last trip to seal the deal in the
most crucial of swing states, Ohio. We will leave no one behind! To
guarantee that everyone who is interested has the opportunity, we have
scheduled two rounds of trips over the final weekend before the election:

Thursday 10/28, one bus will leave the D4D offices at 10pm, to return on the
evening of Sunday 10/31.

Friday 10/29, multiple vans will leave the D4D offices at 10pm, to return on
the morning of Wednesday 11/3.

While in Ohio, we canvass neighborhoods and phone bank as part of our
continuing effort to get out every single progressive Ohio vote on Election
Day. Democratic registrations in Ohio are up 250% since 2000, and it is our
job to make sure that all these first-time or returning voters make it to
the polls on November 2.

On this last hurrah weekend, D4D is also hosting parties that remind
creative young voters of the impact they can have on their government.
Parties are scheduled for Dayton, Toledo, and Columbus, and they promise to
be spectacular, as is always the case with D4D. With only a few days left
to secure the outcome of this election, we hope that anyone with a few days
to spare can join us. In this last crucial push, be a part of history in
the making, and change the course of this country.

To sign up, send an email to getonthebus@downtownfordemocracy.org or call
718.290.9153.

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO GO TO OHIO, you can volunteer with D4D right here in
New York: until the election, we will be processing incoming voter data and
following up with Ohio voters to make sure that they get out and vote.
Phone-banking is a crucial step in ensuring solid voter turnout, and we are
currently scheduling Sunday-Thursday evening shifts (6-10pm) for volunteers
interested in local D4D GOTV activities.

If you are interested in helping us with this important project, please
email volunteer@downtownfordemocracy.org, or call (718) 290-9153.

CTM.05 Conference:[ Splendid Isolation]
Urban and Rural Flows and Counterflows in Electronic Music and Related Media

10.-12. Feb. 2005, Berlin, Germany

The relationship between communication technologies and the city has been a
long and complicated one, where the density of communicative activity has
often been taken as defining characteristic of urban life. By contrast,
rural areas have been idealized and marked by the relative absence of these
technologies, a perception which tends to obscure the social and spatial
consequences of communication technologies there. Out of this dichotomous
set of associations has emerged a constellation of forces, ideas, images and
experiences which have defined both the city and rural zones in unique and
singular ways.

The history of art and music bears many traces of this productive tension,
in which being immersed in city life and rural hermitage act as polar
opposites. Popular music has been identified with contrapuntal movements
that fluctuate between the celebration and derogation of both the rural and
the urban. Within this interplay, various technologies, in particular
electronic communication, have provided the principle forms of mediation
between urban and rural areas, bridging and binding people and places in
multiple ways and creating new hybrid territories situated within a shared
mediasphere. In this context, the challenges of cultural production in and
between rural and urban regions continue to be inflected by the specific
demands of electronic/digital production, distribution and consumption.

This conference intends to address topics relating to the many debates and
discourses produced by the intersection of cultural production, electronic
arts/media, and social relations in urban and rural settings. We encourage
artists, practitioners, journalists, writers and academics to participate in
what promises to be provocative conference. In keeping with the overall
theme of transmediale and club transmediale [BASICS], which investigates the
aesthetic and ethical foundations of a hyper-potential culture, papers
should address, but need not be restricted to, the following frameworks:

* (Exo/Endo)Polis: electronic music, urban/rural dynamics, and cultural
politics
* Refashioning Networks: circuits, nodes, communities, scenes and subcultures
and extended milieu
* Mediations: the rural/urban digital nexus, imagining/representing nature
in the city/the city in nature; electronic music and the experience of
nature
* Counterflows: fluctuating movements between urban and rural music
subcultures
* The Best of Both worlds: bridging the urban/rural divide
* Splendid Isolation: productivity between seclusion, media networking and
boredom; sound cultures beyond the major metropoles
* Perforating the Mainstream: marketing the margin
* Opposing Urbanity: f(r)actions of rural subcultures in the metropolis
* The City and Its Other: critiques from the centre and periphery, speaking
from and to rural and urban perspectives

--------------------------------------------------

The conference will be held in English.

Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and are due by November 15,
2004. Panel proposals and project presentations are also welcome.

Papers should be kept to 20 minutes, including audio and visual clips.
Please notify us at to what audiovisual equipment you will need..

Please submit them to: conference@clubtransmediale.de
or mail them to:

club transmediale

completed correctly. Packages dispatched from outside the European Union
