New Media Artist & Curator in Residence together at Isis Arts, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

Isis Arts is seeking proposals from an Artist/Curator team working with New Media to undertake a short residency at Isis Arts between 10 January and 8 March 2005.

The deadline for submissions is 31 October and interviews will be held at Isis Arts on 11 November.

By placing an Artist and a Curator in residence together, we aim to provide both with a focused period of time to further develop a project that may already be in development, part of a larger project or something new – this could be an exhibition, commission, public artwork, website, event, etc. which demonstrates an inspired approach to new media art. This experimental collaborative tactic seeks to expand the artist in residence model by viewing professional critical engagement as a valuable and mutually beneficial aspect of the creative process, thus enabling new possibilities to arise across a wider number of contexts.

Artist & Curator teams are invited to submit a joint proposal outlining the project or area of research that they would undertake during the residency. Isis Arts is particularly interested in fostering new relationships and partnerships, and is thus open to the possibility of future collaboration in the realisation of the project.

The residency is designed to prioritise process and experimentation. However whilst there is no required product-based outcome, applicants would be expected to demonstrate how the residency would benefit their project in real terms. In other words, how would the time spent together and the technical resources available at Isis Arts add value to the project? What are the anticipated outcomes? Applicants are also requested to explain why they are interested in working with Isis Arts and how their project might compliment or extend the work currently being carried out by Isis Arts.

Fees

The Artist and Curator will each receive a fee of UKP 2000 and will be expected to work a minimum of 10 days together at Isis Arts within the 8 week period. However a workspace and use of the facility will be available to them on a full time basis, if needed.

There is a budget of UKP 500 for travel and accommodation, to be used as needed if one of the team is based outside of the North East.

There is also a small budget of UKP 300 for materials. Technical support will be available on a part time basis and broadband is provided. Please see the Isis Arts website for information about platforms, software and equipment available at Isis.

Eligibility

Open to professional artists and curators who are working imaginatively with new media. Students are not eligible.

At least one of the team must be based within the North East region (Tyne & Wear, County Durham, Tees Valley and Northumberland), however there are no geographic restrictions for the other.

Application Procedure

Proposals should include a project description (2 sides of A4 max) and the following information:

• Artist Statement, Curatorial statement
• Current CVs (artist & curator)
• Support material/documentation – can be cd, dvd or vhs - please include
a list of all support materials and an SAE with adequate postage for return.
• Names of other collaborators & partners (if applicable)

DEADLINE: 31 OCTOBER 2004

Successful applicants will be invited to attend an interview at Isis Arts on Thu 11 November.

Visual AIDS invites artists to participate in our seventh annual Postcards From the Edge benefit. We are pleased to announce that our host gallery this year will be Brent Sikkema. The event will be Sunday, December 5, 2004.

Postcards From the Edge is a show and sale of original, postcard-sized artworks on paper by established and emerging artists. All the proceeds support the programs of Visual AIDS.  All artworks will be priced at $50 and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The works are signed on the back and exhibited so that the artists' signatures cannot be seen. While the buyers have a list of participating artists, they don't know who created which piece until it is purchased and the signature is revealed. A collector might end up with a work by a famous artist or by someone they don't yet know. Either way, they walk away with a great piece of art while supporting Visual AIDS's important work.

To participate, please send a 6" x 9" SASE to:

Visual AIDS
526 West 26th Street #510
New York, NY 10001

For more information or to download the submission forms, go to:
http://thebody.com/visualaids/current/postcards2004.html

Deadline is Saturday, November 15, 2004. One submission per artist.

Thanks for your support!

Founded in 1988 , Visual AIDS promotes AIDS awareness through the visual arts. Two Visual AIDS initiatives, the Red Ribbon and Day Without Art, have become icons of AIDS awareness.  Visual AIDS also supports artists with HIV/AIDS through direct professional services including free photo-documentation of artwork, the largest slide library of work by artists with HIV/AIDS, materials grants to those with low incomes, estate planning services, exhibition opportunities, professional development, advice and advocacy. Atlantic Center for the Arts
2005 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

http://www.atlanticcenterforthearts.org

Since 1982, Atlantic Center's residency program has provided artists from all artistic disciplines with spaces to live, work, and collaborate during three-week residencies. Located just four miles from the east coast beaches of central Florida, the pine and palmetto wooded environment contains award-winning studios that include a resource library, painting studio, sculpture studio, music studio, dance studio, black box theater, writer's studio, and digital computer lab. Each residency session includes three master artists of different disciplines. The master artists each personally select a group of associates - talented, emerging artists - through an application process administered by ACA. During the residency, artists participate in informal sessions with their group, collaborate on projects, and work independently on their own projects. The relaxed atmosphere and unstructured program provide considerable time for artistic regeneration and creation. Atlantic Center for the Arts provides housing (private room/bath with work desk), weekday meals (provided by ACA chef) and 24 hour access to shared studio space.

In the Public Realm Seeks Applicants for New York City Projects
In the Public Realm, a funding program of the Public Art Fund, provides opportunities for emerging New York artists to undertake the challenge of creating a temporary work in a public space. The program encourages innovative and experimental public projects by emerging artists living and/or working in New York City and New York State. Previous experience of working in public spaces is not essential for selection by the program.
Based on initial applications, up to ten artists will be selected to develop formal proposals for a public-art project. The ten selected artists will each receive $1,000 to create a formal proposal. Investigating potential sites and communities in New York City for their proposed project, artists will develop working drawings, prepare a maquette, and present an accurate budget. In the summer of 2005, the selected artists will present their proposals to the Public Art Fund. The fund will choose up to three projects for realization. Those artists selected to create projects will receive up to $15,000 towards fabrication and installation, based on the finalized project budget and an artist fee of $2,500. For a complete program description, detailed applications instructions, and a list of previous winners, visit www.publicartfund.org/

PowerPoint to the People™
ENTRY DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 2

a PowerPoint Competition
presented by the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, California

December 1 & 8, 2004

We're Not Bored Yet,
So Keep Sending Those PowerPoint Presentations

In a consummate act of patriotism, we have extended the entry deadline for PowerPoint to the People™ to November 2nd. The Pacific Film Archive invites you to express yourself using today's most powerful tool of popular persuasion: PowerPoint.
PowerPoint to the People™ is a PP competition, showcasing both automated presentations (December 1), and real-time presentations (December 8) performed before three cantankerous judges. This year's sharp-tongued jurors are Josh Kornbluth, monologuist extraordinaire, best known for his Haiku Tunnel; Eric McDougall, president of the digital communications firm McDougall Creative; and Anne Walsh, faculty member in Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley, and the creator of the notorious project "Art After Death."
The hefty prize money to be awarded the top three contestants in the live competition on December 8th is as follows: $100 for first place, $150 for second place, and $200 for third place. The descending sum for ascending competence acknowledges the ironic rewards of digital presentation.
PowerPoint to the People™ is open to all categories of PP*: informational, educational, and artistic. Automated presentations that have been selected will be publicly screened on December 1.
No entry fee is necessary. Live presentations must be limited to 10 minutes; automated presentations have a maximum length of 20 minutes. Excerpts are permissible.
Please submit entries on CD, DVD, or mini-DV. Explanatory materials describing your PowerPoint project are welcome.
Entries should arrive no later than November 2, 2004.

Send PowerPoint to the People™ entries to: Pacific Film Archive, 2625 Durant Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94720-2250, attn: Steve Seid. For additional info: 510/642-5253.

*Please note: entries created with Keynote are also accepted.

The Pacific Film Archive is a cinema research and exhibition center of world reknown. For over thirty years, PFA has exhibited an international array of films, representing all regions of the globe, as well as all eras of cinema history. The Masters’ Mystery Art Show, a high profile exhibition and sale of original artist’s postcards to benefit the Florida International University's MFA program, will take place at the MB Ritz Carlton concurrently with Art Basel MB ‘04.

The project will follow a format wildly successful in Europe. Works donated by established artists, including some international stars, will be shown along with famous architects, designers and celebrities. All works will have a fixed size (6”x9”) and will be sold at a fixed and very affordable price. The Mystery is that while the names of the participants will be widely publicized, the artists will not be identified during the exhibition, and the signature on each work will only be revealed after the sale is completed. So the public has to “play detective.”

If you want to participate, please contact us at dv.mmas@comcast.net or call at 305-490-4852. We will provide the blank cards and return envelopes. Deadline : All artwork to be received by November 20, 2004.
