The Residency: Artists are expected to stay for a full 2 month work stay and are given a key to the studio with access to the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Studio Manager assists with an introductory orientation, acts as a liaison with suppliers, and advises on technical problems by request. Artists are responsible for their own materials, specialized tools, fees for work done outside the premises, and for an assistant should they require one. We are able to help artists keep their expenses to a minimum but residents generally spend on average $1000 per month. Sculpture Space can accommodate a great variety of projects both in terms of materials and scale, and we will discuss each case individually. For the sake of safety a working knowledge of English is highly recommended. A personal visit is welcome and encouraged. Please call to make an appointment.
About Sculpture Space: Sculpture Space is unique in North America for its service to sculptors and the individual support given to artists who come to Utica, NY to make new work. The program currently selects 20 artists per year for two month residencies and has helped advance the careers of over 300 national and international artists since1976. Artists-in-residence are provided with the space, equipment, technical assistance, and specialized resources available in the Mohawk Valley to make sculpture on a scale which they otherwise might not afford and in an environment conducive to experimentation. The public is invited to quarterly work-in-progress receptions at the end of a residency period. The work that is made and first seen in Utica is often exhibited in galleries, museums and sculpture parks worldwide.
Housing: A subsidized three-bedroom apartment is available at low cost ($125 per month) to artists within walking distance of the studio. Shared bathroom. Food is the artists¶ responsibility and there is a fully equipped kitchen in both the apartment and studio. No pets are allowed in the studio or the artists¶ apartment.
NYS Artists: NYS artists receive free housing plus a $100 transportation stipend.
The Studio is located in downtown Utica, New York, in proximity to light industry and various fabrication shops. The facility consists of 5,500 square feet of open studio, and one 400 square foot private studio for special projects. The space is outfitted with concrete floors, a two ton system of traveling hoists, and extra wide overhead doors. The Artists Office has DSL and a G3 computer; artists should bring their own digital equipment at this time. The 3/4 acres of land that surround the building can supplement indoor studio space in the summer. An outdoor work pad is equipped with a 50' monorail hoist. Depending on the scale of the work, a maximum of four artists can be accommodated at one time.
Artists Office: Artists have a separate office with DSL connection.
Staff: Sydney Waller, Executive Director l Takashi Soga, Studio Manager l Sarah Lathrop, Office Manager

This is an open call for contributing material to a project intended for a group show in Stenersenmuseet, Oslo, Norway, curated by Henry Meyric Hughes. The show is scheduled to open in February, 2005.
I have been invited as a participating artist for the show "BoundLess", which has a theme based on the idea of artists travelling, creating networks of affiliated people and the notion that creativity is relative and subject to your meetings and subsequent inspirations.
I would like to open this up further by inviting ANYBODY to submit material such as text or images - or both - which will fit on a sheet of A4 in black and white. It could be a text, an article, a drawing, a note, a photograph or whatever. Your material will be included in the show as a reproduction, without any restrictions or censorship, and I will furthermore make an effort to reproduce selected images and illustrations (blown up as posters or painted up as some sort of background decoration), as a backdrop to the show. I will even try to execute any instructions you supply, to the best of my ability. There is no limit to the number of pieces you submit, but please note that each work of art should be limited to a single sheet of paper.
Please forward this email to ANYBODY you might think would find it interesting.
You may credit this show as a group show, in which you participate by your involvement in this installation, though I can not guarantee that details regarding each participant will be included for additional printed matter, apart from what I will myself produce, as part of the show, which will be some sort of printed document consisting of all contributions, including credits (names only,) and, hopefully, a poster. The complete document will then be available for download as a PDF from my homepage ( http://www.janchristensen.org ).
I will respond personally to every contributor with detailed information regarding the exhibition. Please note that there will not be any fees or reimbursements included for participants to this project.
Please be aware that copyrights will not be respected. Popular culture is founded on appropriation.
Please send ANY ideas, texts and material to me by email as soon as possible and no later than 31 December, 2004.
email: jan_b_christensen@yahoo.com
Format: DIN A4

File formats: RTF (Rich Text Format), PDF and JPEG.

I hope you find this interesting and I hope to see your contribution.
Thank you in advance and sincerely yours,

ease
your mind a bit about the fee!

A. Please attach your contact information to the work by means of some
non-damaging adhesive tape such as drafting tape or a tab with your

LEAGUE OF RESTON ARTISTS (LRA) ANNOUNCES CALL FOR CURATED AND SOLO ART EXHIBITION PROPOSALS – MAJOR NEW VISUAL ARTS INITIATIVE IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA WILL PRESENT SELECTED EXHIBITIONS DURING 2005 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX NORTHERN VIRGINIA CAMPUS IN RESTON VIRGINIA
(Reston, Va.)In a major new visual arts initiative for the Northern Virginia region, the League of Reston Artists (LRA) announces its first Call for Curated and Solo Art Exhibition Proposals for exhibits to be presented during its 2005 season at its sponsoring venue, The University of Phoenix Northern Virginia Campus, in Reston, Virginia.
LRA Board Member and spokesperson, James W. Bailey, says that individual artists, groups of artists, artist collectives, and independent emerging curators are invited to submit proposals for a curated exhibition by the postmarked deadline of Monday, January 17, 2005. Bailey also says proposals for solo artist exhibitions will be considered and are strongly encouraged from regional artists as part of this call.
“Those interested in submitting proposals are encouraged to visit the site at the University of Phoenix first to see how the space would work with their ideas,” says Bailey. “Interested curators and artists can download the proposal application form from our web site at http://leagueofrestonartists.org. Proposals should include a brief narrative exhibition statement, artist statements from key participants, a proposed budget, a proposed timeframe for the exhibition and relevant support materials, including representational slides, photographs, cd’s or videos. The LRA Board will select shows based on a representation of the proposed works included in the proposal. Interested applicants will need to keep in mind the public nature of the exhibition space. All attempts will be made to show work that is current and reflective of the community and the times.”
The League of Reston Artists (LRA) is an all volunteer not for profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1973 that is open to metro Washington, D.C. area artists, photographers and individuals who are interested in the visual arts. The LRA strives to generate community enthusiasm and appreciation of the visual arts through regularly sponsored juried and judged exhibitions. According to Bailey this call for curated exhibition proposals is a new initiative of the LRA that is designed to stimulate a new level of energy and synergy among artists, curators and the community.
"This is truly an exciting new venture for the LRA and we hope this opportunity to help facilitate and develop the careers of emerging artists and emerging curators will help to further demonstrate the serious level of commitment the LRA has for advancing the contemporary arts in our community,” says Bailey. “We are also extremely grateful to the University of Phoenix Northern Virginia Campus for honoring us with their deep commitment as a supporting and sponsoring venue. We are excited to invite artists and curators within artist community to answer this innovative call to help fill a significant and beautiful gallery space at the University of Phoenix with engaging works of art during 2005.”
Bailey says that the LRA has for sometime wanted to expand its programming to accommodate the strengths, talents and long-term career interests of its growing membership: “The Board of the LRA recognizes that there are many tremendously talented artists and emerging curators in our region, as well as right here in Reston. We see this new initiative as a creative project designed to support and foster the development of a wide range of engaging art exhibitions for our community. If you are an artist or aspiring curator who has dreamed of curating a professional art exhibition, or staging a solo exhibit, this is your chance to put forward your best concept and idea. The LRA stands ready to help make your vision a reality.”
According to Bailey, each selected curator's role under this call for proposal will be to conceive, visualize and organize the art and artist(s) proposed for the selected shows. The exhibitions can be theme-based, media-based, retrospective or otherwise. Because of space limitations, all shows must be restricted to 2-dimensional works that meet the LRA’s framing and hanging standards policy. This policy can be reviewed on the LRA’s web site at http://leagueofrestonartists.org/faqs.htm. Individual artist(s) or photographers are encouraged to submit proposals for solo or group shows.
