Subject:
  xmas calls x 88 pt 1

Message:
hello all.

apologies for the delay and subsequent massive buildup... i was out of town, and i had to completely rebuild the scripts running the list (which i couldn't manage to do on the road) they couldn't deal with the increased volume for the list. hopefully this version will work better. in the process i added some pleasant new graphics to the homepage.

possibly the best benefit of the rebuild, is that it gave me the opportunity to set the script up so that all the calls will be archived at http://theredproject.com/calls/archives/ in the following naming pattern mmddyyx.html (where the x refers to the number of the email on that day (1 of 2, etc..)

if you haven't made a donation please consider this as a time to do so. (only about 20-30 people of the 1000+ on the list have.) To make a donation, please follow this link: https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=Shop%40Mandiberg.com or send a check to 24700 McBean Pkwy #AR-34, Valencia CA 91355, USA

The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest is sending you our submission
guidelines for our next issue, 2.5.

We'd like to be calling for articles of the rainbows' ooh and ahhs, on
utopian fantasies and inter-species collaboration.

However, we find ourselves putting together our next issue around the sorry
conception of THE ROLLBACK. The state of the world is increasingly dreadful;
and for the precious few not facing the barrel of a gun its dreadfully
boring. Between fear and guilt, mourning and rage, fateful decisions and
nostalgic looks we are seeking articles with vision towards these
ends:

-What needs to be said right now?
-Give us your historical perspective( from ancient Mesopotamia to
Yesterday's news). From interviews, textual exegesis, interstellar brain
chats, to solid critiques.
-How is it that artists, the media, activists, et al are living, struggling,
claiming victories through this dreck?
-How have resistance struggles maintained through hard times?
-How has liberatory culture consolidated gains and pushed through to keep
dreams alive, to even move culture back from this cliff towards justice,
hope, beauty?

In addition, we are interested in hearing any other ideas you have. What
should be said, read and talked about right now?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our deadline for submission proposals is January.1st.
Our working deadline for firsts drafts is the end of February 1st.

We will be putting articles on-line as they are completed. We hope to have
issue 2.5 to the press by mid May.

Contact us by e-mail at sparkle@c-level.cc (Marc)

And so, the ball is bouncing,

[ the palimpsest project > version 2.0 ]

+ ABSTRACT:

Like an audio cassette that has been recorded upon too many times, a
palimpsest shows evidence of its past states of existence while
producing something entirely new with the combination of its inherent
layers of historical material.

The creation of an artistic palimpsest can take on many forms and
cover a variety of subjects. It may pose more questions than it
answers. It may be a thing of beauty or a jumbled mess. But it must
be infused with a sense of history, time and purpose.

The palimpsest project - which began when version 1.0 premiered on 30
September - seeks to create an ongoing series of digital palimpsests,
using an initial body of work as the basis for future work which will
reference each previous layer of content.

+ GUIDELINES:

Artists are asked to visit version 1.0 of the exhibition, located here:

Upon viewing the exhibition, interested artists should choose a piece
to rework according to the following guidelines:

1. Taking into consideration the palimpsest concept [a detailed
explanation of which may be found at
http://www.stasisfield.com/space/present/palimpsest/catalog/palimpsest.html],
participating artists should view the original pieces as SURFACES
upon which to create a new work. The surface should be erased, yet
still leave traces of the original work behind. The new work should
be created ON TOP of these traces while allowing them to show through.

2. Careful consideration of issues such as duration, image size
and/or functionality are crucial to the success of the project. The
original piece MUST be present in some way within the new piece in
order to merit inclusion within the upcoming exhibition.

3. While it is preferable that the new pieces remain the same media
as the original [i.e. a sound file should be re-interpreted as a
sound file, an image file as an image file, etc.], exceptions may be
made depending upon the final output.

+ SUBMISSION INFORMATION:

+ To Submit a Proposal:

Please email a proposal (NOT finished work) for your final piece to
space@stasisfield.com. Your proposal should include the following:

1. Your name

2. The name of the original piece you will work from

3. The media of your final piece (i.e. mp3, flash file, digital photo, etc.)

4. A detailed description of your new version of the piece, including
details of the process you intend to work with and how your
additional work will relate to the original piece

+ Deadlines:
All proposals must be received by 6 January 2003. Artists to be
included in the exhibition will be notified of their proposal's
acceptance by 13 January 2003.

+ IMPORTANT:
All accepted work must be received by 17 February 2003.

Final deliverable work will be accepted either on CD-R via
conventional mail or preferably a URL to its location online. Artists
whose works are accepted will receive more details about final
delivery with their acceptance notification.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

John Kannenberg
Curator

Theme

In the politico-geographical arena, heavily charged with oppressive discourses, how does one raise courageous and bold voices, voices which dare and act in the drifts of cyberspace? How does one practice resistances, not according to parameters imposed by others, but by those originating from the ingenuity of individuals and networks, based upon a necessary and critical solidarity, and a desire to counter domineering dogmas and regimes? In continuity with its critical investigations on women and their appropriation of technologies, Studio XX focuses on subversive acts by 'intelligent agents' and cultural hackers who push for original languages in order to redefine the stakes in question.

>From such acts come questions on notions and protocols of access, the numerous strategies that women use to invest virtual spaces and to impose their own realities. The possibilities evoked in the proposed examinations include programming languages, hacking, frontiers, privilege, open source, accessibility and transgression.

There is also question of alternative customs and uses, nonetheless valuable and born out of the economic divide which widens increasingly; localised strategies which mix into the composition of immediate, polymorphic and planetary phenomenas. Living flux and new alliances, mobile in the magma of active data, behind which we discover these operators, resolutely insolent, active agents, radical and free

Exit Art Request for Proposals for THE RECONSTRUCTION BIENNIAL DUE December 31, 2002.

In its third reincarnation, Exit Art has moved to a spectacular new 17,000 sq. ft. space located on the ground floor and lower level of 475 Tenth Avenue on the corner of 36th Street. With this move we are reconstructing both the physical space and artistic mission of Exit Art.

In the spirit of Exit Art, we are asking young and emerging artists to be involved in this process to reinvent with us new ways of presenting art. Prior to the renovation of the new space, Exit Art will invite artists to create an installation as a metaphor for reconstruction/renovation related to the space’s existing architecture – THE RECONSTRUCTION BIENNIAL.

This biennial has a dual purpose: it focuses on site-specific installation art and it helps us in the spiritual and artistic renovation of the new space.

The entire process of installing the exhibition will be open to the public as well as accessible twenty-four hours a day on the Web. It will be a dynamic, constantly evolving exhibition in which the artist can continuously alter their work, with new artists being added through out the project.

The exhibition will begin January 2003.

The gallery space can be viewed from the street.

Feel free to walk by and peer in at the ground floor windows at 475 Tenth Avenue, on the corner of West 36th Street, to get a feel for the raw space.

Please submit a drawing and one page description of your proposed project, up to ten slides or one video or one CD of your current work, and a SASE (for the return of your materials) no later than December 31, 2002 to :
