Artist Registration: 2004 Silicon Valley Open Studios
Silicon Valley Open Studios
(San Jose CA)
The 18th Annual Silicon Valley Open Studios is Coming!
October will kick off registraton for 2004 Silicon Valley Open Studios Self-Guided Tours! The shows will occur the first three weekends in May, and many exciting new events are in the works to build on last year's momentum and make this year even more successful for all artists.
Through the new SVOS Stars program, you have the option of having your work seen by Bay Area art leaders including museum directors and curators. You can get extra media attention by participating in our new School Tours program. And this year we are empowering artists to share their stories with the media. Our PR committee will be trained in how to generate awareness in your community. And, if you volunteer just 10 hours to help promote SVOS to the media, you'll receive valuable training in media relations from our PR consultants, as well as access to our media contacts.
In addition to these new programs, our tour guide will list artists by name, media and location, including an easy-to-read map. In addition, we will promote our Online Gallery all year long...and you'll be able to dynamically update your web page any time you want!
See www.svopenstudios.org for more information and to register online.
If you can't get online, just send a self-addressed stamped envelope to receive forms to:

VISUAL ARTISTS PROPOSALS
Spencertown Academy
(Spencertown NY)
Spencertown Academy
P.O. Box 80, Spencertown NY
15 Mar 2003
Call To Artists for a wild and fun group show, "Down the Rabbit Hole" 15 Nov - 21 Dec 2003 curated by artist Laurie Goodhart With Spring reluctant to even consider a rebirth, here we are at the Gallery office perversely thinking about next winter and the Holiday Season show. Do you have lively, or even distant, memories of the Lewis Carrol stories, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass? We’ve got a small elevator shaft here in the gallery just crying out for a better life as a proper Rabbit Hole like the one Alice fell down. Naturally there ought to be a Royal Croquet Game nearby as well.
We’re envisioning 12 free-standing face-card characters playing croquet on the gallery floor, with related art on the walls and in "The Rabbit Hole" and inviting YOU to submit a finished design proposal for one or more of the following:
The Croquet Game. Laurie has made bamboo armatures for the 12 face cards, K,Q,J of the 4 suits. They are free standing, 5’ high. The area to be filled with card-character is 39"x24". They have leg outlines which can be filled in, decorated or ignored. The artist may also add extending face or head and/or arms as long as piece does not become top-heavy and unstable. Props such as a flamingo or a long scepter can stabilize an elaborate figure. Please consider the back view, as they are free-standing. The bamboo-framed rectangle is currently open space, but we can provide a glueable, paintable (oil or acrylic) translucent ground inside the rectangle at the artist’s request.
Please indicate whether you would be willing to slightly alter your design to fit a different face or suit. Remember, a Jack is free to be all the things a King can only dream of...
Wall pieces surrounding the croquet game. Paintings or mixed media works of perhaps: The Cheshire Cat; The White Rabbit; The Executioner; hedgehogs & flamingoes; the Royal grounds, with rose bushes and all; Royal Heart Ancestors; The Duchess; The Gardeners (#cards of spades), Royal Children(# hearts),Courtiers(#diamonds) or Guards(# clubs), Royal Refreshment Table… You can refer to Alice’s Adventures, chapter 8 for more inspiration. Please give intended dimensions for these pieces.
The Rabbit Hole. There is a small, semi-open elevator that can be hung with flat work ("maps and pictures...jars of marmalade"...) on shaft walls, and possibly some hanging pieces at top. Viewers will be able to ride up and down the Rabbit Hole passing artwork on all sides!
Alice. Where is she? Do you see her? Let us know, we hope she’ll appear.
We encourage you to submit 2 or 3 designs for different cards and/or wall pieces, to increase your chances of being included. Please have fun with this; let’s just play here and not get seriously burdened.
So that the show is coordinated, Spencertown Academy reserves the right to decline any finished piece that is not as represented in the original design and description.
If you are interested, please submit the following:
* 8x11" or larger full-color, detailed design with attached description of size, media, etc. for each card or wall piece you are envisioning, up to 4 maximum. Be sure to label each separate sheet with your contact information. Color copies are preferred over your original. If you are doing a card, remember to plan for the back view to be appealing as well.
* 3 labeled slides of other works you have done in the past that are similar in execution (media, style, size, etc.) to your proposal(s).
* SASE for return of your slides and notification.
Spencertown Academy will keep all accepted proposals as well as several alternate selections in the event that any original participant becomes unable to complete their project.
Deadlines and Dates: Submissions Sept 1 THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED, PLEASE CONTACT LAURIE A.S.A.P. FOR DETAILS
Accepted artists will be asked to finish all work and provide a photograph of finished work to the Academy by September 21.
Any accepted proposals not complete by September 21 will be judged abandoned and an alternate artist will be given the remaining time to complete a piece instead.
Arrangements for delivery of artwork will be made in October.
Down The Rabbit Hole will be the Spencertown Academy’s Holiday Show with extra publicity and events such as a Festive Silent Auction, readings from Lewis Carroll and a Fancy Tart Evening in early December.
Artists can elect to donate any amount between 10%-100% of sale price of artwork for the benefit of the Academy’s ongoing programs. To encourage viewers to become buyers, we ask that each of the 12 card figures have a starting price of no more than $250. Since the artist will have no expense for framing, very little for materials, and no initial submission fee, we think this is a reasonable approach for generating enthusiasm during these "slow economic times", particularly since artwork can make an elegant gift.
Wall pieces can be priced as artist sees fit, but we would like you to include a ballpark figure along with your April proposal.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR IDEAS!
Artists can see one of the card figure armatures and the "rabbit hole" at the Academy February-April during our regular gallery hours.

SEEKING FIVE ARTISTS TO WORK ON SITE-SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENTALLY-BASED PUBLIC ART
Teaneck Creek Conservancy, Inc.
(Teaneck NJ)
The Teaneck Creek Conservancy is seeking five artists within 50 miles of New York City to work on a series of environmentally-based projects over the next five years. The artists will create site specific, major public artworks for a new 46-acre park in Teaneck, NJ. The park is in a highly visible, heavily traveled location at the junction of interstate highways 80 and 95. The Puffin Foundation will provide seed money -- five $1,000 grants -- to the artists. The Teaneck Creek Conservancy will provide staff support and direction regarding specific project opportunities in outdoor settings in the landscape. The selected artists will create concept designs and prepare preliminary cost estimates that will form the core of future funding proposals. The Puffin Cultural Forum Gallery will show selected designs created by the five artists and related public art at an exhibition in 2004. Artists who apply must demonstrate their ability to raise funding for major project implementation.
The Teaneck Creek Conservancy is a 46-acre area within Bergen County’s 1,200-acre Overpeck Park in Teaneck, NJ. This property is a historic dump site that is being reclaimed and restored to positive public use. Community-based plans for the Conservancy were developed over the past two and a half years. These plans include a park with a 1.5-mile trail system for passive recreation, public art, wetlands research and restoration, and public outreach and education that is focused on the property’s environmental resources, land use, and history -- including the Native American Lenape presence here for thousands of years.
Project opportunities for artists include a stream corridor that requires bank restoration and storm water management engineering, a 300’ retaining wall with sculptural features below a sculpture garden stabilization and landscaping project, creation of a playground and public gathering place on the shore of open waters using dumped pavement -- “New Jersey Rubblestone,” and creating a sculpture and play area out of five abandoned 6’ diameter concrete pipes.
Email the Conservancy at teaneckcreek@mindspring.com to request the complete RFQ and application.
