Message:
Hello All,

in response to the post on the last list, the president of the HMC sent me a series of emails, of which I have posted her formal response. I would like to preface this with a couple observations:

There seem to be 4 kinds of residencies: Ones that offer a stipend, studio, and housing; ones that offer a studio and housing; ones that offer a studio but no housing but which will help you secure funding (such as banff, or gasworks in london); ones that charge a flat fee at the front. In my personal research, and my research in compiling this list it appears to me that almost no legitimate residency charges a flat fee upfront without helping/suggesting you secure art council/grant monies to offset the cost. The HMC residency call _did_not_ state that it charged a fee upfront, and if i had known that i would not have posted it.

In her letter Ms Szechy cites a figure of $25, but upon closer research, the current figure is $45/day (http://www.flash.net/~igazda/dms_HMC4.html). This seems like a very high daily rate, especially for accomodations in _rural_ hungary in a college dormitory. $45/day, or roughly $1400/ month is a New York/London/Tokyo cost of living. In fact, Gasworks cites a figure (which includes tube fare and all art materials) of 1200 GBP/ Month which is about $1900/ month. (http://www.gasworks.org.uk/varts/info/#funding) Closer inspection also found hungarian college dorm hostel prices to stay in a double room around $10 per day, and I would expect they could negotiate a lower price b/c the duration and quantity of rooms.(http://www.backpackers.hu/info.html)

With that, I leave you to make your own decisions,

Yours,

Michael

From: Beata Szechy

Dear Mr. Mandiberg:

This letter responds to the inaccurate statements concerning the
yearly Artistsí Residency program sponsored by the Hungarian Multicultural Center. I am
the president of this nonprofit organization. The residency is sponsored by the
Hungarian Culture Ministry, the American Embassy-Culture Department and the City of
Balatonfured.

We have successfully completed yearly artist in residency programs in each of the last
nine years. Over 80 artists from around the world have attended the residencies. All
but 3 have given us highly complimentary reviews.

The letter suggests that the financial dealings of the residency were suspicious
and that the costs were excessive. Nothing could be further from the truth. The costs,
accommodations and services provided were clearly set forth in the materials provided to
her before she registered. No profits were generated by the residency: instead, 100% of
the funds charged were spent on the program. The center maintains receipts and records
which evidence all funds received and expenses incurred.

The costs of the program included
--providing lodging in the historic Paloczi Castle,
--two meals a day,
--transportation to and from Budapest to Balatonfured (150 kilometers each way),
--an opening reception,
--a closing reception,
--studio,
--sightseeing,
--an exhibition of the residents works (including advertising and other costs) at the
Art East Gallery in Balatonfured, and
--the organization of media relationships (resulting in over 10 published articles and
publicity of the artists works on television and radio, all of which was most favorable).

As is described in the materials, in addition to the Balatonfured exhibition, every
three years another exhibition is held at the prestigious Vizivarosi Gallery in Budapest
to showcase the works of the artists for the past three years.

The cultural attache to the U.S. ambassador, television, radio and newspaper media
representatives and over 500 people attended the opening night of the month long
exhibition in 2001. A number former residency participants from the US and other
countries also returned for the exhibition and were pleased.

The next exhibition at the Vizivarosi Gallery will be July 1 -31, 2004. We believe that
this exhibition will be even more successful than those in the past.

All of this was provided at a cost of about $25 per day! The suggestion of profiteering
cannot be supported given this very modest cost.

I was present each day for the first and last weeks of the residency and was in daily
contact by telephone at all other times. In addition, the cultural organization curator
for the city was there each day. It is correct that we do not provide instruction
because the artists who must demonstrate competence before the are selected.

As is described in the materials, the accommodations in the Paloczi Castle (which dates
from the 1700s) are normally provided to college students during the school year. The person who wrote attended the residency 4 years ago. She and 2 others of the 80 plus attendees over
the years would have preferred to have stayed in major hotel accommodations of the type
available in her home city of New York. That is not practical for a program of this type
and cost. Indeed, virtually all of the participants preferred the ambiance of the castle
and the historic town of Balatonfured and the numerous other amenities available there.

Call for Entries: Graphic Design
Independent Curator
(Boston MA)

Seeking non-commercial posters for an upcoming travelling exhibit of experimental work by graphic designers, addressing the impact of cultural difference on contemporary graphic design practice. The goals are twofold: to focus on the role of the outsider as a visual practitioner with heightened sensitivity, and to promote gallery-based graphic design as a legitimate element of professional practice.

One may become an outsider through travel, study abroad, or immigration. One may be born an outsider. It may be a choice; it may be a self-imposed stance. One's outsider status may be evident on the surface; it may be consciously hidden. We are looking for visual evidence and exploration of various experiences and perspectives on the issue.

Additionally, the gallery context is one in which graphic design frequently takes a subordinate role. This exhibit seeks to reverse this situation and bring graphic design into the forefront, activating the "outsider" in the gallery.

Your poster can be digital, analog, or a combination of processes. It can be a single piece or a series. Work in the exhibit will include digital output, letterpress, and screenprinting, among other processes.

Submissions are sought from all over the world, from graphic designers in all areas of practice. We welcome and embrace a diverse array of experiences.

Please email a preview of your submission by Oct 1st 2003. Your entry should be a 72 dpi Jpeg file, no larger than 100k. If sending multiple submissions, each entry should be no larger than 100k. Email submissions to maya@montserrat.edu.

Submission checklist:
- Jpeg file(s)
- brief artist statement
- summary of education, employment, exhibit/publication history
- current contact information
- birthplace and current location
- summary of significant travel experiences

Art in Moion V
Art in Motion
(Los Angeles CA)

AIM, the University of Southern California School of Fine Arts international festival of time-based media, in partnership with the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, is pleased to announce AIM V: Syzygy (The Human Remix).

AIM V: Syzygy calls for entries that explore the question of the human/machine remix. Derived from a Greek root meaning yoked or paired, syzygy implies a state of interdependent duality that speaks to the increasingly permeated relationship between human and machine. In this renegotiation of what it is and means to be human, we are exploring the ramifications of the "remix"- its impact on the human relationships (from global to interpersonal), on perception and the expression of subjectivity (human and/or machine), and on the experience of being a body (physical or virtual, flesh or machine).

The AIM V: Syzygy (The Human Remix) exhibition will be held March 7- June 6, 2004 at the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena. AIM V will also include screenings on the video billboards on West Hollywood's Sunset strip and satellite lectures and events in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Cusco, Peru.

Works must be time-based and address the festivals theme (however obliquely). Works may be submitted by anyone working in any discipline and medium. Submit proposals and/or copies of projects (no originals please) in the form of DVD, VCD, VHS (NTSC), Macintosh CD-ROM or URL, as appropriate. Entry forms will be available mid-September and may be found at www.usc.edu/aim.

Deadline for entries is November 30, 2003. For more information please email aim@usc.edu

Hidden Agenda- Call For entries
The Drawing Room
(Chicago IL)

Hidden Agenda
Call for Entries: Deadline September 10, 2003
Call for Submissions for Hidden Agenda
Exhibition to open The Drawing Room: a new Pilsen gallery belonging to SAIC graduate students.
Eligibility: Open to artists working in any medium.
Proposals should be sent electronically, including digital files (jpeg, Quicktime, etc.) to klodge@artic.edu. Email for more information or to arrange proposal delivery. We realize this is short notice and that we are expecting a rapid turn around for both proposals and submitted work, but bear in mind, the Opening coincides with the Pilsen Artwalk, which draws a large crowd and offers great exposure to emerging artists.

Hidden Agenda conceals its actual intent the moment the doors open to the public. The perpetrators of this ruse obscure true meaning within a calculated fog of subliminal misdirection, bombarding their victims with coded language pounding one’s capacity to recognize reality. But the Hidden Agenda blinds both, victim subjected to the ruse, and the perpetrator entangled in their own devices. It suffocates truth and nourishes their amnesia. Whether we perceive it or not though, a line has two sides, a negative a positive, and so then a Hidden Agenda its own virtuous opposite that, rather than deceive, enlightens. What is backwards becomes informative, nurturing fertility and elasticity of the mind over ignorance. Because it does not offer easy solutions, to circumvent opposing intentions, a Hidden Agenda solicits a higher form of thinking from its victims, whom seek to yank a true understanding of reality from the darkness. Like the Sirens’ song, the evening news, the sexual allure of the female praying mantis and the boy who unexpectedly does his chores, a work of art has a hidden agenda. To effectively communicate, it need not slap the viewer’s senses, principles and personal philosophies, but should (for this exhibition) implement more covert means, located in both content and presentation. When the fog dissipates a more harmonious existence is revealed. So while the Agenda may be Hidden from the moment the doors open, its purpose remains to guide the audience into a deeper engagement with the art.

PERMANENT ART COMPETITION, DOBBS FERRY STATION, METRO-NORTH RAILROAD

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts for Transit is seeking artists to create original two-dimensional designs for mosaic artwork at the Dobbs Ferry station on the Hudson Line, Metro-North Railroad. This station is currently being reconstructed as part of the MTA Metro-North Railroad Capital Program.

Up to one percent of the construction budget for each station is allocated for the design, fabrication, and installation of permanent artwork. The commissioned artist will create designs that will be reproduced into glass or ceramic mosaic. Because a fabricator, approved by the MTA, will translate the artwork into mosaic, an artist’s prior experience - or lack thereof - with this material will not be taken into consideration when reviewing artists for this project.

LOCATION OF ARTWORK
The area in the station designated to receive the artwork will be the retaining wall on the northbound platform. This wall will be refinished and the mosaic will be installed on this surface according to the artist’s design.
AWARDING OF PROJECT
A selection committee comprised of arts professionals and MTA Arts for Transit and MTA Metro-North Railroad representatives will select finalists based on the quality and appropriateness of the artists' portfolios. Finalists will be given a detailed overview of the project and receive a $750 honorarium to create a proposal for original artwork for the station.

PROJECT BUDGET
The maximum budget for the design and fabrication of the artwork for each station will be approximately $100,000, which includes an artist fee of 20% of the final project costs. As part of this fee, the selected artist will be required to submit a fabrication budget, produce completed designs, and oversee the fabrication and installation of the artwork.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Interested artists must submit the following:

A portfolio of up to 20 slides in a slide sheet, each slide labeled with your name and artwork specifications

An artist statement

OPTIONAL: Resume, press clips, postcards, catalogues, etc.
