Journal of Digital Information
Submissions are sought for a special issue for the Hypermedia Systems theme of JoDI on visions of the future of common use hypertext. This special issue is linked to a panel session at ACM Hypertext 03, where alternative digital futures incorporating hypertext as a primary mechanism will be discussed by a panel of experts. The Web has been the dominant public perception of hypertext for over 10 years now. There are, of course, many other hypertext systems, that could augment, live alongside, or even completely replace the Web. The aim of this special issue, and of the related panel discussion, is to investigate the viability of these alternative systems, and to consider how their everyday use can simplify the processes of reading and writing, understanding and thinking in the working and recreational activities of large numbers of people.

Resistance is Useless: Call for Artists
PROPOSALS DUE: 16th September
Firstdraft Gallery
Sydney

Firstdraft is seeking proposals from artists for 'Resistance is Useless', a curated exhibition to be held in November 2003. The show will be curated by Emma White and Sara Oscar.

Artists are increasingly required to justify the existence of their art-objects and frequently question the purpose of their art making (Why am I doing this? What is this for?). Consequently, art readily lends itself to the question of meaning. What has the function of the artwork become, and how does our perception of its purpose influence its function?

Resistance Is Useless will be a group show featuring works investigating the use value of art, and use value in general.

We are seeking proposals of new or recently completed work in any medium. Proposals should consist of up to ten slides, videos up to ten minutes in length. Work documented on CD should be in an easily readable format.

Send all submissions to:

INFO: 'Resistance is Useless', Firstdraft Gallery

Resonant Cities: Call for Sound Works
New Media Scotland

New Media Scotland seeks sound works for 'Resonant Cities': Internet radio streaming that explore the sonic identity of our surrounding space and that engage with the fragmented 'noise' of the city soundscape: people, traffic, communication intrusions, mobile phones, radio traffic, city wildlife, buildings...

We are particularly interested in audio works which involve one or several of the following ideas or processes:

- Acoustic Ecology - Acousmatics - Phonography - Sonic research - Radio art, Internet radio - Microsound - Lowercase sound - Internet communication media and audio streaming - Electronic communities - Artists' software for sound and music - Sound work developed using open source processes and principles - Generative sound - Sound archives - Spoken word / oral history - Field recordings - The re-purposing / representing of existing analogue sound recordings, such as amateur recordings, scientific recordings, and accidental, lost or abandoned recordings -

The works selected by the Drift team will then be curated into themed streams that will be available via this web site.

Our intention is to expand the audience for the work, encourage appreciation of sound art, and broaden access to a genre which is too often labelled as esoteric and inaccessible. We cannot pay a fee for this opportunity, but we will facilitate the broadcast of your work.

Eligibility - Open to artists, musicians, producers in the UK and across the globe.

Guidelines and submission form available from:

About "pro-existence"

Recent worldwide events have brought the brutality of our global society, its prejudices, its racial, religious, political and cultural differences, back to our immediate attention. With such a wealth on social-political problems surrounding us, we, as artists, question the use and sense of what we do.
What role can art play in such a difficult environment of global capitalism and inequality, xenophobia, violence and terrorism?
The Pro-Existence project wants to examine the possibilities art may or may not have in this society. We want to bring together artists from bigger and smaller "hot spots" around the world.
Co-existence means building bridges between people and understanding ourselves as part of a complex, interdependent system.
