Sonic Circuits
American Composers Forum
(St. Paul MN)
SONIC CIRCUITS XI
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Application Form:
http://www.soniccircuits.com/partci/
Festival site:
http://www.soniccircuits.com
Connect with the circuit:
Composers:
• Be on a CD of tape-works, broadcast around the world;
• Have your score realized by new performers;
• Have your video art seen across the US and abroad;
Performers:
• Be on a roster and receive invitations to perform live;
Presenters:
• Produce your own festival event—our DIY kit will facilitate your programming.
Just send in your electronic musical work (if you plugged something in to make it, it qualifies — style no object). Selected works will be promoted to venues and radio stations for one year. Over 320 composers and artists have been programmed since 1993. Sonic Circuits is partly a series of live shows, and partly a promotional service showcasing a cross-section of the latest kinds of artistic technologica from the club, the academy, and the basement.
Sonic Circuits, now in its eleventh and final year, is a festival with a difference; it comprises a caravan of curated works which travels the world to form the basis for a multitude of events throughout the season. Any musical works or acts which involve electronic technology (e.g., works for electro-acoustic tape, live performance with electronics, video art, new media art, sound art...) may be submitted for program consideration. The 20-30 selected works are offered to more than 95 venues across the globe and, in addition, the CD of tape works is sent to numerous radio stations.
Entries are curated in four categories:
Tape: Works intended for tape (CDR) alone are produced on a run of 300 CDs. These are used for playback at live events, for promotion to radio stations, and are available worldwide on the innova label;
Video: Works for video (VHS-NTSC, DVD) with a strong sound component are compiled and sent to each venue for projection during live events;
Score: Works for instrument and tape that can be realized from a score. Samples are sent out on demo CDRs so venues with local performers interested in learning the piece can request performance materials;
Live Acts: Works performed by their creators. Samples and contact info are sent out so venues can invite you to perform.
Detailed information, all program notes and bios are available from www.SonicCircuits.com.
If you have any kind of performing space, Sonic Circuits is designed to facilitate your programming the latest in electronic art. Simply request the no-obligation DIY kit and we will send you the materials for a program framework which you are welcome to supplement with locally-produced material. Schools, theaters, lofts, galleries, bars, construction sites, and courtyards have all been home to presentations. Minimum requirements: PA system, playback equipment (video projector and lighting are desirable). Pre-recorded material will be sent to you in Spring and you can then check out the work samples on the web: mix it up with local/student work or live performers and you have a show. The Sonic Circuits season begins in November and continues throughout the year. Schedule your event at your convenience.
Submissions
Please submit one work for:
> Audio (CDR, DAT) or video tape (NTSC format only, VHS, DVD, 8mm DV, Mini DV);
> Work for live performer with electronics; or
> A sample of your own live performance.
Entries will be reviewed by a panel of artists,technically knowledgeable and familiar with a range of new-media issues and musical styles.
Eligibility
Open to all artists worldwide. American Composers Forum membership is not required at the time of application but you are welcome to join, and selected artists are expected to become members.
Selection Criteria
• Artistic quality of the work. Sonic Circuits seeks to encourage experimental and innovative uses of the particular medium;
• Technical quality of the work. Skillful use of technology will be favored;
• Appropriateness of duration and format. Programming considerations often favor works less than 15 minutes duration, but longer works will be considered.
• Preference will be given to works that have not yet had wide exposure. Inclusion on the Sonic Circuits roster does not guarantee every work will be performed.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: SIM GALLERY
Rainey Straus
(San Francisco CA)
Become a Sim Artist
The SimGallery Project Call for Entries
Contribute to the SimGallery Project as we investigate the worlds of art and performance in The Sims Online (a multiplayer online game) in conjunction with the “Counter Gaming” show at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in January 2004.
Help us to explore what happens when an ‘real world’ white-cube gallery lands in the pre-fab, populist online experiment known as the Sims Online? What kinds of art and performances are relevant, or even possible in virtual space?
The SimGallery project brings the world of computer games and high art together to anticipate and explore the transformation of art creation and consumption in the current social and technological moment. The project will combine an on-site installation which blurs the boundaries between online game space and the real world galleries of the Yerba Buena Center. Museum goers will have live access from computer stations in the physical galleries to the virtual galleries within the Sims Online game.
Submit artwork or a performance proposal for inclusion in the Online SimGallery Project's show and performance series.
Some issues we hope interested artists will explore:
• What art can be within the constraints and rules of an online game.
• How virtual embodiment affects performances and the experience of art online.
• How the Sim aesthetic merges with and reshapes your own, when you bring your work into this venue.
• How a traditionally-styled art space functions in an online game.
Screenshots of the galleries and performance space are available at http://www.simgallery.net/gallery.html. You can also arrange a hosted visit to the SimGallery in TSO by sending email to contact@simgallery.net
Deadline for entries: October 31, 2003.
Complete submission details are below (and available in pdf format at http://www.simgallery.net/ent.html)
Please note: It is extremely important for artists unfamiliar with TSO to explore the constraints of the game world when envisioning works and planning proposals.
Important dates:
Deadline for Entries: Oct. 31 2003.
Notification of Status: November 15, 2003.
Exhibition Dates: January-April 2004.
Proposal Format:
Your proposal must include:
• Project description
• Artist(s) resumé
• Indication of category for your work (performance or artwork)
• At least one of the following:
• A SIM location for existing works and project description.
• 3 URLs to other online works with project descriptions. • 10 jpgs representative of other works, with a slide list and project descriptions.
• Portfolio CD, VHS video or 10 slides with slide list or project descriptions and accompanying SASE.
Submission Process:
Please send your materials either by email to:
entries@simgallery.net

CALL FOR ARTISTS
kaPow! Inc.
(Philadelphia PA)
I am coordinating a Saturday school program for a school in North Philly that begins this Saturday, September 20.
The program is a series of workshops every other Saturday from 8am-1pm for the rest of the academic school year.
The students are all in the 5th grade and we expect about 30-40 students in each workshop.
I am looking for artists (and groups) to conduct lecture/demonstrations with the students in all areas of the arts: capoeira, dance, music, deejaying, painting, videography, animation, writing etc.
The artist will design his/her workshop in conjunction with me--I will facilitate as a liaison between the school and the kaPow! organization--which is funding this project--in terms of getting materials, preparing the space, etc.
Interested artists should contact me with the following:
-name and medium
-bio/resume (especially work with children, residencies, and teaching experience)
-a description of how their workshop would run
This is an informal proposal--so please just send in a Word document--no fancy paper or covers needed.
I am the only one reading the proposals, but I want a good sense of what the artist is prepared to offer the students. I have to prepare a "brochure" of available courses, so the students can sign up in advance.
The shorter and sweeter the better :-)
Please make sure that in the workshop description is included not only instruction in the varying art forms but also a chance for the students to either exhibit or perform at the end of the day.
Also make sure to include what materials would be needed and an approximate cost.
Please send any scheduling conflicts along with proposal as well. We are looking to have one artist for each session, but some may require 2-4 sessions. Please state your preference. If you have open availability, please state that as well--there is a possibility that some workshops will go for 10-20 sessions throughout the school year (dependent upon student interest).
Pay is $150 per Saturday.
Materials for students will be provided.
We are not able to pay for transportation at this time.
Deadline: ASAP

Patagonia Art, rx:tx and Projekt Atol
Makrolab Project - CALL FOR OPERATIONS AND PROJECTS PROPOSALS FOR THE MAKROLAB TERRITORY 2003/2004 PERIOD
Proposals will be accepted for residencies and operations until the end of May, 2004
The MAKROLAB markIIex structure was installed on the island of Campalto (Isola di Campalto) in the Venice Lagoon on June 13, 2003 as part as part of the Biennale di Venezia art exhibition, Individual systems section and the PHARE CBC Interreg IIIA program, organised by Patagonia Art, rx:tx and Projekt Atol.
On September 15, the lab operations will stop for a month for winterisation preparations and winter overhaul and the resident Projekt Atol and rx:tx crew will prepare the lab for the new climatic conditions. Operations will resume on October 15 or earlier, depending on the overhaul speed. The network operations will continue without stopping on November 2, as previously planned, when the Venice Biennale finishes. The lab operations will continue!
From September 12 on, PROJEKT ATOL is starting to accept proposals from the tactical media community individual workers and teams, free and open source software community workers, radio scientists, biologists, ornithologists, ichtiologists, engineers, ecologists and artists for operations and projects proposals for the Winter 2003 and Spring 2004 periods.
The lab is equipped with a 450D/150U satellite tcp/ip link, a primary ADSL based radio link, two multi OS workstations, a server, a printer and a scanner, data logger, sensor suite, satellite Ku band receiving capability, HF and VHF radios and from December 15 on a radar and a 10foot parabolic motorised dish.
The crews are expected to manage the laboratory while in residency in all its technological and social aspects, to manage the project webspace and to document their work and day to day operations. Knowledge of boating, meteorology, electrical systems and networks is advisable, but not a condition.
The MAKROLAB primary research areas are in the following fields:
Telecommunications mapping and reflection, cryptography, network mapping and topologies, free and open source software coding and distribution systems, remote sensing data acquisition and processing, bird migration patterns and navigation, captial migration mapping and reflection, human economic migrations mapping and reflection, ecological and social impact of migratory patterns, migration interrelation algorithms, local ecology awareness information systems, closed energy and waste cycle development, robotic sensor deployment, biospheric environment research, non linear and non hierarchic data display, use and dissemination, autonomous social systems, closed ecologies research, network centric identity research, energy production, storage, containment and distribution systems.
Any research dealing with cold weather and arctic/antarctic conditioning is welcome, as well as any research and work dealing with the local, Venice lagoon ecology in all its aspects.
The operations and project proposals should include the following check list items:
- title of the proposal
- author, authors and email contact
- category or field of the proposal (if applicable)
- proposal or proposals abstracts with a proposed time line (maximum 2 pages, we strongly suggest residencies of at least 15 days). Proposals for shorter periods will be given equal scrutiny, but the experience of the lab operations is that the longer the residency, the more effective it can be. Makrolab is physically and socially a challenging environment, and an adaptation period is almost always a neccesity.
- crew member list with email contact and short CV (a maximum of 5 and a minimum of 2 crew members will be allowed during the winter and spring operations)
- possible special dietary, medical and similar needs of the crew members should be noted already in the proposals
All work done in the lab must be or become OPEN SOURCE and must be publicly available. No private projects with distribution and presentation limitation can be accepted, due to the nature of the project. Projects in the tactical and strategic categories are an exception to this rule and will be assesed on an individual basis.
The crews travel expenses will be covered to a maximum of EUR 200 per crew member and will be assesed individually, the supply stocking will be done in conjunction with the crews, but budgeted by the lab operations.
Any special material and equipment needs cannot be at this time supported by Makrolab, but attention will be given to proposals that include equipment that could be integrated into lab’s future operations.
Each crew member must show proof of valid health insurance for Italy and is responsible for her/his travel arrangements to and from Venice, Italy. A free, unguarded parking facility is available for those traveling by car.
The maximum allowed volume of the personal items should fit in the crew 70X70X50 cm rack storage, a networkable laptop computer is very much advised.
Note: there are no clothes cleaning facilities in the lab, although arrangements can be made for emergency situations. Winter and waterproof clothing is prescribed for the Winter and Spring operations, since the use of the boat in the winter will be a wet affair. A clothing plan should be part of each crew member planning for the work and the stay in the lab.
Makrolab is an equal opportunity program, open to everybody. Operations and project proposals will be assesed on the basis corelations with the projects main objectives and research, tactical and strategic interests.
The MAKROLAB project is an ongoing mobile laboratory setup built for the open and integral research and common work of artists, scientists and tactical media workers in the fields of telecommunications, migrations research, weather and climate.
It was first set up in 1997, during the documenta X exhibition in Kassel, Germany, and was consequently operating in Western Australia (Rottnest Island), Slovenia (Veliki Kras) and in the Scotish Highlands (Atholl Estates). The final aim of the project is the establishment of an independent art and science based research station on the Antarctic continent in 2007.
The 2003/2004 project is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, the PHARE Interreg CBC IIIA program Italia/Slovenia, Mobitel d.d., Mestna Obcina Ljubljana, Mestna Obcina Nova Gorica, Comune di Venezia and coordinated by Patagonia Art,Projekt Atol and the rx:tx institute.

The Bookmark Project
Part of FLEX. an ongoing program of site-works and interventions at the
Bathurst Jewish Community Centre, organized by The Koffler Gallery
November 9 to 16, 2003
Held in conjunction with the 27th Annual Jewish Book Fair
Leah Posluns Theatre Lobby, Bathurst Jewish Community Centre
Curator: Mark Prier
Reception: Sunday, November 9, 2 - 4 pm, Koffler Gallery lobby
For the second year in a row, the Koffler Gallery is organizing The Bookmark
Project, an intervention of artist-design bookmarks. This year's theme,
Pause, examines the bookmark's obvious function as a physical punctuation
mark, an interruption of textual time, and its hidden function as a
secondary visual text, promoting material of its own. The bookmark can
interact, rework and hold the book's meaning by framing it with another
message, that, while unchanging in content, moves across the book's pages
with the reader.
Both unique bookmarks and multiples by fine art students and practicing
artists will be introduced into the 10,000 books on display during the
Annual Jewish Book Fair, held in the Leah Posluns Theatre Lobby, Bathurst
Jewish Community Centre. Bookmarks will also be on view simultaneously in
the Koffler Gallery lobby showcases.
Bookmarks for the intervention should be functional, and not damage or
scratch the books on display. Artists are requested to submit two original
bookmarks, one for the intervention that will not be returned, and one for
display in the showcase.
The Koffler Gallery is not responsible for the loss or damage of bookmarks
submitted for consideration or those used during the Bookmark Project.
Bookmarks will not be insured by the Koffler Gallery while on the gallery's
premises or in its keeping.
Artists whose bookmarks are accepted for this project will receive a nominal
artist fee, the amount of which is dependent on the number of artists
participating. Fees will be issued by mail within 30 days of the close of
the exhibition.
Deadline for Submissions: October 15, 2003
Results will be announced shortly afterwards
