CALL FOR ARTIST PROPOSALS
Memory Project
Salina Art Center
Salina, Kansas
February 14-May 16, 2004
The Salina Art Center is requesting proposals from artists who are investigating the topic of memory. This project is intended to create lively and meaningful exchanges among art, artists, and the community of Salina, Kansas. While the goals of the project will become more specific as proposals are reviewed and considered in light of artistic questions and concerns, the Art Center hopes to activate a conversation about issues of art and memory in contemporary life. The primary venue for projects will be the galleries of the Salina Art Center.
The Memory Project hopes to encourage viewers to negotiate intimate and collective aspects of memory, to foster awareness of how objects and materials summon memories, and to open dimensions of evidence and definitions of truth. Artists may either submit a work in progress, or suggest a project that grows from this invitation.
The Memory Project is a collaboration by a regional group of artists and thinkers who have been meeting to shape its form and content. This group has formulated questions to consider, however artist proposals need not be limited to those listed below:
What are the tensions between memory and truth?
What are the tensions between remembering and forgetting?
How do we proceed individually and culturally when we do not agree upon versions of the truth?
How do the senses reconstitute and evoke memory?
Memory is not innocentÖto what end to we remember?
How does intimate memory negotiate, contradict, or complete collective memory?
How do artists deal with socially coded memory?
How does new research in science and psychology shift ideas about memory?
Artists are asked to submit a resume, 10-20 slides of previous work or the work in progress, a statement about the work and its relationship to memory, logistical requirements, including costs involved in shipping, fabrication and installation. Budgets between $500 and $5000 will be considered.

Paul St George is curating an exhibition called Sequences.
The exhibition will aim to answer two questions. Can we gain insights into the use of sequential images in contemporary digital art by re-examining chronophotography and pre-cinema? Do we gain a better understanding of chronophotography and pre-cinema by re-assessing their histories from a current perspective?
The exhibition will show work that uses sequences of images to explore ideas of time, movement, duration and space.
Academics and experts from the worlds of multimedia and art are invited to propose relevant work. If the work is accepted the proposer will be invited to write an essay about the work and its relationship with chronophotography or pre-cinema. This collection of essays will be published in a book at the time of the exhibition.
Paul St George is developing 'Sequences' with Peterborough Digital Arts. The first showing of 'Sequences' will be at Peterborough from 27 November 2004 to 23 January 2005. We then plan to tour to a number of national and international art galleries.
Are you interested in sequential images? Are you interested in the relationships between contemporary art and chronophotography or pre-cinema? If you would like to contribute to 'Sequences' in any way please write to: Paul St George
--
You are probably familiar with pre-cinema (magic lanterns, zeotropes, phenakistiscopes, thaumatropes, praxinoscopes and so on) but you might want to see some examples of chronophotography at http://www.sequences.org.uk/

Subject: Classic II Exhibition
Call for entries The Classic II Exhibition - Short version.
Electrohype will organize an exhibition with 24 artists presenting works
on the Macintosh Classic II computer. The exhibition will take place at
Electrohype-ROM in Malmo, Sweden during the period December 1st. 2003
and January 20th. 2004.
The idea is that the exhibition will focus and reflect on the
development both in computer based art and the accelerating demands on
hardware used to create and present art.
Electrohype will provide the opportunity, and the hardware. The artists
are hereby invited to provide the content.
The exhibition has a clear reference to the 1997 exhibition, called "Mac
Classics (the immaculate machines)" at the Postmasters Gallery in New
York. This exhibition was curated and organized by Tamas Banovich. More
info and text about this exhibition can be found on our web site, please
follow link in the end of this mail.
Opening Marathon According to our plan we will organize 24 openings, one
for each work, from December 1st. to the 24th. Each day during this
period will be an opening for a new work and the exhibition will grow
during December. After the opening marathon the exhibition will be on
display for 14 days with all works running simultaneously. This might
seem like a strange idea but it refers to a Nordic traditional Christmas
calendar where you open one window each day in a paper calendar, each
window containing a surprise.
Deadline It is not much time left until the December 1st. So the
deadline to contribute to the exhibition will be November 15th. But
please feel free to submit material as soon as possible, we continually
evaluate the material we receive and do basic testing on our computers
So blow the dust of your old 98030 or 386 and start testing your art.
Just remember to step back a few years in version history of the
software you would like to use.

For April 2004 we, Trebor Scholz and Geert Lovink, are organizing a
conference at the State University of New York at Buffalo (upstate New York)
about the art of collaboration, models of critical web-based art, and the
role media technologies play in the making of social networks.
If you are interested in these topics please send a short introduction
to your interests and background to our listserv after subscribing to it at
collaboration-subscribe@topica.com
Because of the nature of the topic we would like to invite those interested
in the topic of (online) collaboration, free cooperation, models of critical
web-based art, and the role media technologies play in the making of social
networks to join us in an online forum/mailing list where we will discuss
related issues.
Please feel free to join us, even if you think you won't be able to make it
to Buffalo next year. This event is very much about experimenting with

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Journal of Digital Libraries (Springer)
Special Issue on Digital Museum
Museums play an important role in collecting, organizing, conserving, and
exhibiting the cultural and artistic heritage of the world. With the
development of digital museums, the museum collections may now be digitized
and disseminated in digital form using new media and networked channels.
This presents powerful opportunities to overcome the geographical or
logistical obstacles that hinder people from visiting the physical sites of
museums. If we consider the fact that museums normally have not more than 5%
of their holdings in their exhibitions, it offers for the first time the
possibility to make the total of knowledge kept in museums available to
research and the interested public. Since cultural information obtains much
of its relevance from thorough understanding of wider contexts and the
variances of analogous phenomena in different environments, digital museums
also open the vision to be able to research relevant information spread over
a multitude of disparate information sources.
With the objective to enable people to explore the collections for research,
inspiration, learning, and enjoyment, digital museums particular emphasize
the mechanisms to balance the interests of documentation, education and
entertainment. From this perspective, the on-going convergence of digital
libraries and digital museums into integrated information spaces seems to be
only at its beginning. Many issues, including intellectual, technological,
legal, economic, organizational, and design concerns from the perspective of
museum's applications, need to be explored.
Recognizing the importance of the research in digital museum issues, The
Journal of Digital Libraries is organizing a special issue on Digital
Museum. The primary focus of this special issue will be on high-quality
original unpublished research, case studies, as well as implementation
experiences in the areas pertaining the issues in digital museums.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Information integration and knowledge environments
* Information access, dissemination, and use
* Identification of cultural objects in digital resources and
duplicate detection
* Data models, metadata models, ontologies for cultural heritage
* Multimedia techniques for representation, presentation and display
* Digitalization and annotation of real world artifacts
* Case studies, experiences, trials, and evaluations of digital
museum systems
Submissions are invited from researchers and professionals examining and
applying information technologies to cultural heritage, including policy
makers, humanities scholars, archivists, information specialists, electronic
publishers, museum curators, and educators.
