STUDIO SPACE FOR ARTISTS AND WRITERS
Beacon Cultural Foundation
(Beacon NY)

BEACON CULTURAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES
BULLDOG STUDIOS
AFFORDABLE WORK SPACE FOR ARTISTS OF ALL DISCIPLINES
NOW AVAILABLE IN A CLASSIC, TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY FORMER HIGH SCHOOL IN BEACON, NEW YORK

“To visit Beacon now is to visit a place where something more ambitious than commercial desire is beginning to win out, where the productive energy of the future looks promising.”
The New York Times, June 2003

(Beacon, N.Y.) – The Beacon Cultural Foundation announces the launch of Bulldog Studios, a 125,000 square foot former high school now available to artists of all disciplines for rent at affordable prices. Bulldog Studios will provide more than 60 classroom-sized working studio spaces for visual and performing artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, jewelry makers, graphic designers, architects and theater artists, as well as other individuals involved in arts-related endeavors.

“The coming together in a single facility of artists, cultural and educational organizations, and creative design studios will provide a unique opportunity for creative individuals and organizations to develop relationships that will lead to the development of a vital, sustainable creative community,“ said Sara Pasti, Director, Beacon Cultural Foundation, the cultural organization leading the creation of the studios.

Rental rates for Bulldog Studio space run from $.65 - $1.00 per square foot per month depending on the characteristics of the individual spaces. Spaces with large windows, elevator access, special equipment, for example, will lease for higher rates than those without. Bulldog Studios are located at 211 Fishkill Avenue, Beacon, one block north of Main Street. The studios are an hour’s drive from New York City; a short distance from the Beacon Metro-North commuter rail line; and, near Beacon’s Tallix Foundry.

The building also includes large multi-purpose spaces, including a former auditorium, cafeteria and gym, available on a short-term basis for art-related programs and community activities including exhibitions, theater, music, dance and film presentations. All resident artists and organizations will be required to provide a minimum of four hours a month of public benefit activities, which may take the form of workshop offerings, participation in monthly "open studios" or exhibitions, or internships for local high school students.

The Bulldog Studios is a project of the Beacon Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organization that develops and promotes artistic, cultural and related community programs and activities, and develops facilities that present such programs and activities. In addition to Bulldog Studios, the Beacon Cultural Foundation offers the following programs: Artist-in-Residence, offering short and long-term opportunities for artists to develop new work; and, Beacon Project Space and Bulldog Productions, presenting programs in contemporary art, including exhibitions, films, performance and conversations on art, culture and community issues.

The Beacon Cultural Foundation Executive Director is Sara J. Pasti. Real estate developer William S. Ehrlich is Chairman of the Board of Directors and David A. Ross, former director of the Whitney Museum of American Art and SFMOMA, serves as Board President. The Foundation’s activities and programs are made possible through grants with other support from the Beacon Terminal Associates, William S. Ehrlich, the Schwartz Family Foundation, the LEF Foundation, the City of Beacon, the Beacon City School District, the Dutchess County Arts Council, the Bank of New York, the Holiday Inn/Hampton Inn, individuals and local businesses.

FENWAY ARTISTIC MARKERS
UrbanArts Institute
(Boston MA)

Boston, MA -- The Fenway Alliance, a consortium of academic, cultural, and arts organizations working collaboratively to enhance the cultural, environmental, and economic vitality of the Fenway area, is inviting professional artists to submit qualifications for a project to create artistic markers in the Fenway Cultural District. The Fenway Alliance project is to create artistic markers for the Fenway Cultural District that identify this as a distinctive, culturally rich area of Boston that is diverse, lively, and welcoming to both residents and visitors. The Fenway Alliance has received a grant from New England Foundation for the Arts to begin planning these artistic markers. UrbanArts Institute at Massachusetts College of Art is administering the call to artists for this stage of the planning process. Selected artists will be paid $800 to create full proposals for the artistic markers. Commissioned artists will be expected to work with community and Boston Department of Public Works in the construction and installation of artistic markers. The artistic markers will first be installed along Huntington Avenue/ Avenue of the Arts. There is $300,000 for construction and installation along Boston’s Avenue of the Arts; installation on other streets in the Fenway Cultural District will be dependent upon additional funding. This project is limited to artists located in Massachusetts.

Key Objectives for the Artistic Marker:
Identify and unify the Fenway Cultural District
o highlight cultural and educational character of neighborhood
o distinguish the District as a lively, diverse, hip cultural destination
o High quality and artistic merit—elegant
o Reflect diversity of Boston
o Be artistically and visually interesting—bold
o Easily replicable, artistic markers will need to be compact and fabrication simple enough to fit in multiple locations
o work will first be installed along Huntington Ave, and then throughout the rest of the District with the goal to invite visitors and residents to walk, look around, and discover more of the District
o have universal appeal—interesting, safe and accessible for people of all ages, perhaps include a fun element for children
o encourage people to slow down and look around-- create interest in the middle of long blocks and make people feel welcome and safe at night
o Could have a lighting element
o Sensitive to a variety of pedestrian needs, especially elderly, disabled and children

Interested artists should contact the UrbanArts Institute at Massachusetts College of Art. If you are an artist already represented in the UrbanArts Artist Registry, simply drop us a note (fax or email acceptable-no phone calls) to let us know that you would like to be considered for this project.

If you are NEW to the UrbanArts’ registry, we invite you to submit your materials for consideration. Please send:
o Resume with current contact information.
o Up to sixteen clearly labeled slides of relevant past work (leave top row of slide sheet empty).
o A corresponding annotated image list with title, media, dimensions, location, brief description and date of the work, project budget, and project partners, if any.
o Additional support material, including press clippings or other relevant information on past projects.

No faxes or emailed entries will be accepted. Materials will not be returned. Submissions will become part of the UrbanArts Institute’s Artist Registry for consideration in future projects. Please do not send proposals at this stage.

Focus on NICA, Yangon
NICA (Networking and Initiatives for Culture and the Arts) NICA is a newly established art center aimed at contributing to development in the fields of culture and the arts. Located in Yangon, Myanmar, the centre is in its founding stage and currently managed by IFIMA (International Forum for InterMedia Art), working directly with local and international artists, writers, educators and trainers to create a platform for mutual sharing and learning across various art disciplines. It will also offer training schemes and educational programs to promote a well-rounded development of arts and cultural practices, focusing on aspects that will range from skill training, studio practice, theoretical studies, to curatorial writing and project management, etc.

A primary objective of the art centre is the development of collaboration, networking and resource-sharing especially between Myanmar arts and cultural practitioners with those from the region, and also from other parts of the world. NICA welcomes interested parties to contact us about possible collaborations and participation in our programs.

'Open Academy 2' is among NICA's planned activities. This event is tentatively scheduled for December 2003 and is planned for Yangon and Mandalay. It will include a symposium and workshops to promote creative exchange, collaborations and resource-sharing among Myanmar artists and foreign participants. This event will build on the achievements of COLLABORATION, NETWORKING AND RESOURCE-SHARING: MYANMAR except on a smaller scale.

SIGGRAPH 2004 Calls for Participation
ThanX to Computer Graphics World

ACM SIGGRAPH announced SIGGRAPH 2004, the 31st International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, 8 - 12 August at the Los Angeles Convention Center, is seeking contributors to all programs. The Call for Participation is available at http://www.siggraph.org/s2004/cfp/.

"Through our Call for Participation, the SIGGRAPH 2004 committee is seeking pioneers, creators, experts and virtuosos to present their newest achievements in computer graphics and interactive techniques," said Dena Slothower, SIGGRAPH 2004 Conference Chair from Stanford University. "In addition to core topics including rendering, modeling, and animation-where we're seeing exciting new advances in real-time processing, we encourage submissions from new technology and tangential areas such as: human-computer interaction, computer-aided design, computer vision, digital video, robotics, visualization, graphics hardware, and applications such as web graphics, and computer games."

The SIGGRAPH 2004 Call for Participation is looking for both first-time and veteran contributors in three areas: presentations, experiences, and services. The presentations are Courses, Educators Program, Panel & Special Sessions, Posters, Papers, Sketches, and Web Graphics. The experiences are Art Gallery: Synaesthesia, Computer Animation Festival, and Emerging Technologies. The call also seeks volunteers and support for service areas: GraphicsNet, International Resources, and Student Opportunities.

Posters provide a unique venue for research that is still formative or of tributary value to presentations in the Papers or Sketches programs, including:

- Ideas that are interesting and valuable, but of interest to a niche audience.

- Incremental results that are important but don't comprise a full paper by themselves.

- Preliminary results in which the full course of an experiment has not yet been run.

- Partial results that demonstrate proof of concept but have not yet solved all problems.

- The latest new results that weren't available in time for the earlier deadlines.

Poster sessions also provide a unique style of presentation. Unlike the one-way lecturing of Papers and Sketches presentations, poster sessions allow informal personal interaction between presenters and attendees. This is particularly valuable for new research, because it allows contributors to receive feedback and ideas in the early stages of their work. The Poster submission deadline is set later than other submission deadlines to allow maximum opportunity to present your graphic gems. See www.siggraph.org/s2004/cfp/posters for submission information.

The popular 5k award competition for excellence in web design and production will be part of the SIGGRAPH 2004 Web Graphics program. The 5k competition challenges web developers to create the most innovative and stimulating work possible in less than 5,120 bytes. Entries can include virtually any client-side technology in use on the web, including Flash, DHTML, Java, SVG, X3D, and weirder things that you need plug-ins for. For details, see www.siggraph.org/s2004/cfp/web.

By its very nature, SIGGRAPH attracts an exclusive group of buyers from around the world, across all facets of this expanding technology. Much of the research in computer graphics is exploding into everyday products that are vital in today's technology-hungry culture, both on the job and at leisure. Organizations that offer products and services used in computer graphics and interactive techniques will participate in the SIGGRAPH 2004 Exhibition, 10 - 12 August.

After Social Construction: Technology, Knowledge and Society
ThanX to ACTLAB

A Special Issue of _Social Epistemology_

500 word proposals due: 1 December 2003

Submission Deadline: 1 March 2004

Issue Editors Jonathan Sterne and Joan Leach

Formatted .html and .pdf calls available at http://www.pitt.edu/~jsterne/asc.html.

As promoted by Bruno Latour, Wiebe Bijker, Trevor Pinch, and many others, social construction of technology (SCOT) approaches have been a major force in technology studies. They have offered vital alternatives to positivistic and deterministic conceptions of technology; rich notions of human and technological agency; and new objects and approaches for the cultural, historical and philosophical approaches to technology. At the same time, critics have charged that SCOT does nothing more than repeatedly discover that it objects are "socially constructed."

As the approach becomes more established in technology studies, and as authors like Ian Hacking challenge the limits of the SCOT paradigm, we want to know what comes next. Is this a moment to find the next step after social construction? Or is this a moment where we can build a new social epistemology of technology that presupposes a constructionist paradigm?

For our special issue of _Social Epistemology_, the editors seek two kinds of submissions:

***full length essays (approximately 9000 words) that challenge, extend, rethink or pose robust alternatives to the SCOT approach

***short position papers of no more than 1000 words for a forum on the SCOT paradigm and the future of technology studies.

Visit the _Social Epistemology_ page at Routledge for full style guidelines: http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/sepauth.html

Email submissions are preferred, though snail mail is acceptable. Send all submissions and queries to:
