Anna Banana seeks AKA's (Also Known As's)

This project is supported by a grant from the Canada Council.
If you use and are known by an assumed pseudonym or nickname, or have changed your name legally, (other than by marriage) and are willing to engage in a research project into the affects of that change, I want to hear from you.
The objectives of this art/research project are to:
a) locate a significant number of artist-persons who fit the above description, and
b) to investigate relationships between their name change and whatever visuals they have that reflect or result from the changed name, in their work, outlook, disposition, activities, relationships and artistic practice , and to
c) document with video, photos and texts any and all such evidence.

Through this project, I hope to verify the idea that those undertaking the radical step of changing their name, have accessed and expressed a wider range of talents, expressions and interests than they did while using their given names. My own experience in this regard, has been profound, and my reading on the subject, indicates that changing one's name can have far reaching affects.
For purposes of the final presentation of my findings, I am looking for individuals who have visual evidence; materials that reflect or result from their new/assumed identity. For example; artwork (subject matter, style, media), clothing, photos/body size, posture, appearances (before/after), collections, activities; anything undertaken since the change that has a visual component.
The four phases of this research project are as follows:
Stage 1 to find/identify individuals who fit the description above.
Stage 2 will be a questionnaire probing the above issues, to identify those individuals whose name change has visual evidence, and who would be willing to engage in... .
Stage 3 a video interview, and to allow me to photograph whatever visual material you have that relates to/reflects your changed name for an eventual . .
Stage 4 presentation/installation, possible publication of the results of this research.

PLEASE NOTE: STAGES 3 and 4 will be dependent upon funding, but the project goes ahead regardless of the final outcome/presentation mode.

PS. Other Anna Bananas WELCOME

Call for Work
Off Base & Out of Line
film and video screening

Deadline: Oct. 25
Formats: VHS, 16 mm film

Soliciting the short work with nowhere to go but unashamed of it, not to be fooled but bored with the fight, made with passion, calculated or otherwise, in unredeemed disregard of standards. Rewarding exasperation and defiance, the patiently planned but made with outrage, those workers disgusted with dog training, and censored video writers. Let's annoy the opposition, go the wrong direction, but stay the course against power and establishment. We're projecting in the wrong small town, home of oil barons and homecoming queens. Anti-authoritarian, faithless, and strong, this is no last reprieve, no refuge for the disappointed. Videos with a cause, tapes with attitude, songs of sadness, poems of madness, to hell with self-censorship, forget the leaders, critics, and teachers. Politics welcome.

No entry fee, no form to complete. Just mark your tape or film with title, name, and contact information. Screening to take place at the Brickhaus Cafe, Denton, TX, university town of the University of North Texas, at the end of October.

Visual AIDS
New York, NY

Call for entries

Visual AIDS invites artists to participate in our sixth annual Postcards From the Edge benefit. We are looking for artists to create and donate a 4" x 6" work on paper for the one-day exhibition and sale.  Postcards from the Edge will be hosted by Galerie Lelong on Sunday, November 16th from 3:00-6:00 PM.

Postcards from the Edge is a show and sale of original, postcard-sized artworks on paper by established and emerging artists. All artworks will be priced at $50 and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The works are signed on the back and exhibited so that the artists' signatures cannot be seen. While the buyers have a list of participating artists, they don't know who created which piece until it is purchased and the signature is revealed. A collector might end up with a work by a famous artist or by someone they don't yet know. Either way, they walk away with a great piece of art while supporting Visual AIDS' important work. All the proceeds support the programs of Visual AIDS.

Founded in 1988, Visual AIDS promotes AIDS awareness through the visual arts. Through the Frank Moore Archive Project, we assist and provide services to artists with HIV/AIDS: free photo-documentation of art, inclusion in the slide registry, material and emergency grants, exhibition opportunities, career advice, and advocacy. For more information, please visit our web site: www.visualAIDS.org.

Painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and mixed media are all welcome. All work should be 4" x 6" and signed on the back only.  There is no entry fee, however we ask for a  $1.00  donation to cover postage and handling.  One submission per artist.  Postmark deadline: Saturday, November 1, 2003.

If you would like to participate, please send a 6" x 9" SASE to:

Visual AIDS
526 West 26th Street #510
New York, NY 10001

Vienna, Austria
Körber Foundation
KöRBER FELLOWSHIP: HISTORY AND MEMORY IN EUROPE
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: FELLOWSHIPS 2004/2005
The Körber Foundation aims at encouraging active citizen involvement in societal discourses. The foundation sees itself in this sense as an independent forum for initiative, conducting projects in the realms of politics, education, research and international relations. Körber as an operating foundation has for a long time especially been active in furthering historical and political culture as well as a cross-border dialog on history and identity in Europe. Both the Federal President´s History Competition, conducted since 1973 and Eustory - History Network for Young Europeans are the Körber Foundation´s major activities in this field.Eustory is an international history network comprising of non-governmental member organisations in so far 16 European countries. The member organisations agreed on a basic document, the Eustory Charter, fostering a new historical awareness and postulating a multiperspective and "European" approach towards history. Eustory provides an international platform for cross-border dialog on history and identity in Europe.

I. Objective

The Körber Foundation and the Institute for Human Sciences jointly award one Visiting Fellowship and two Junior Visiting Fellowships on "History and Memory in Europe".

The objective is to support projects that contribute to a transnational perspective on modern European history. They should not consider Europe as a given territorial entity but as a historical experience, a cultural imagination, and/or a political point of reference. By focussing on the discursive construction of Europe, projects are particularly invited to reflect the role of historiography as well as the position and significance of memory. This particularly includes a reflection on the different ways how history, historiography and memory are used and abused for political purposes and discourses of exclusiveness in the European context. IInterdisciplinary approaches are highly welcome.

The six-months fellowships will enable junior and senior scholars to work in Vienna on a research project of their choice within the framework of the objective. The fellows will participate in the scholarly community and activities of the IWM.

II. Conditions

The Körber Fellows are invited to spend six months at the IWM during the academic year 2004/2005 to pursue their research project while working in residence at the institute. The fellows will receive a stipend to cover accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance and incidentals. The amount of the stipend for the Visiting Fellow will be determined according to the "no gain, no loss" principle and seeks to compensate for a loss of income based on the current salary of the recipient. Junior Visiting Fellows will receive a stipend in the amount of EUR 8000 for the six-months term. Furthermore, fellows will be provided an office with personal computer and have access to e-mail and internet, in-house research facilities and other relevant sources in Vienna. The fellowship may be taken up between July 2004 and June 2005.

III. Eligibility Requirements

Candidates for the Körber Visiting Fellowship must be citizens of any European country or permanently reside in Europe; must have obtained a Ph.D. in history or another discipline in the humanities or social sciences with a research focus related to the objective of this programme; must hold a senior academic position (equivalent to associate professor level); and must substantiate their expertise in the field with their publication record.

Candidates for the Körber Junior Visiting Fellowships must be citizens of any European country or permanently reside in Europe; must currently pursue their doctoral degree OR have recently obtained a Ph.D. in history or another discipline in the humanities or social sciences with a research focus related to the objective of this programme; must not be older than 35 years.

IV. Application Procedure

The application consists of the following materials:
the application form completed by computer or typewriter (please download Word document or PDF or request by fax or email.

a concise research proposal in English (max. 4 pages, double-spaced, A4) including

>> the scientific problem(s) addressed

a curriculum vitae and list of publications;
names of two referees familiar with your academic work (applicants for Junior Visiting Fellowship only!)

V. Jury

A jury of experts meets once a year to evaluate the applications and select the finalists. Members of the jury are:
