Queer Packaging/Body Commodities - Call to Artists
WORKS/San Jose
(San Jose CA)
"Queer Packaging/Body Commodities" investigates the current phenomenon of sexualized identity and its visibility in a media-glutted America, whether that identity is referred to as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, or queer. What do the producers of a corporate mega-media aesthetic invest in to satiate American consumers? Are these images of fantasy or fetish and whom do they satisfy? How do they read for a public or body politic that seeks to address a social and political environment in transformation? Who is not included and what levels of inclusivity appear tolerable? What of the abject body and dystopic vision? We invite artists to respond and critique. We extend this critique to any form of American mass media.
WORKS/San Jose
WORKS/San Jose is a non-profit contemporary visual and performance art space dedicated to community involvement and the exploration of the artistic experience. WORKS provides artists and the community an opportunity to challenge and exchange cultural and artistic images and ideas. WORKS fosters emerging and established artists and curators who often have limited access to commercial spaces and large institutions. The WomenArts Network - A New Program to Increase Public Awareness of Women Artists
The Fund for Women Artists
(Northampton MA)
The Fund for Women Artists is calling on women artists, especially women in theatre, film, and video, to create online profiles on the new WomenArts Network at www.WomenArts.org. The WomenArts Network is a free service designed to increase the hiring, funding, and public awareness of women artists by providing a convenient, centralized place on the Internet to learn more about them.
The Fund for Women Artists launched this new service in October 2003 and plans to make the WomenArts Network the most comprehensive source of information about women artists on the Internet. Women artists from any discipline are invited to go to www.WomenArts.org and click on the tab labelled WomenArts Network to obtain instructions for creating a profile. Artists submit their profile information to The Fund for Women Artists, and if it is approved, their profile will be activated so that it can be seen by anyone visiting the website.
Each artist’s profile page will include a personal statement (up to 150 words), a description of her current projects (up to 200 words), and a short bio (up to 200 words), as well as links to the artist’s email address and website (if any). Artists may use an anonymous forwarding system if they do not want to post their email address publicly. Artists may also post a picture, a full resume, and review excerpts.
The search features of the WomenArts Network make it a powerful tool for anyone who is planning a conference, putting together a production team, booking a festival, or organizing a single event. Visitors to the website can search for artists and women-led arts organizations by name, theme, art form, union affiliation, geographic region, and more. They can do a quick search by typing an artist’s name or a keyword phrase in one of the WomenArts Network search boxes on any page of the site, or they can use the Advanced Search page to search by several criteria at the same time.
The Fund for Women Artists will publicize the WomenArts Network to arts organizations, academic institutions, and others involved in women's or social justice issues who are looking for artists. Artists will also be encouraged to use the site to find others with similar interests. These publicity efforts will make it an advantage for any woman artist to be part of the WomenArts Network, even if she already has a website of her own.
In addition to the WomenArts Network, the website at www.WomenArts.org contains almost 100 pages of useful information about arts funding sources, advocacy issues involving women artists, and the fundraising initiatives of The Fund for Women Artists. Visitors can sign up to receive free funding newsletters or advocacy alerts.
The site is divided into four sections that represent the four major goals of The Fund for Women Artists - building the visibility of women artists, raising more funds for women artists, empowering women artists by giving them the fundraising information they need to raise money for their projects, and improving the overall working environment for women artists through advocacy efforts. The goal of the WomenArts Network is to demonstrate the range and excellence of women artists, as a way of generating public interest in addressing the funding and employment issues that many women face.
Founded in 1994, The Fund for Women Artists provides fundraising and management services to help women artists obtain the resources they need for their creative work. In its first nine years, the organization has raised over $2.3 million for women artists including an endowment of $425,000. Its excellence has been recognized by prestigious grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Animating Democracy Initiative of the Ford Foundation, and gifts from many prominent individuals.
The creation of the WomenArts Network was made possible by generous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Irene E. & George A. Davis Foundation.
