LEA Call for Papers: Artists and Scientists in Times of War
Guest Editor: Shirley Shor
The Leonardo Electronic Almanac (ISSN No: 1071-4391) is developing a
special issue dealing with the phenomenon of war, and will explore
the relationships between artists, scientists, and war in
contemporary society.
The issue will investigate war from an interdisciplinary perspective,
as a cultural practice of conflict that affects each and every one of
us on a daily basis; a practice that is broader and deeper than armed
conflict between nation states; that occurs on many levels when
national, social, economical and cultural interests collide and which
involves issues such as real-time media representation of facts,
language and architecture, freedom of information and truth and power.
We are in a midst of a global digital media war where copyright
holders fight consumers over digital music, books and movies sharing
and duplication. A software war where open and free systems battle
closed and proprietary ones for running the world's computer systems.
A Man vs. Machine war in-which the world's greatest chess players
fight for the human creative edge and self dignity against the
superior speed and memory of computers.
We live in a time of total screening of war as a spectacle on
television and computer screens - from live war images on news cable
stations, war simulation video games, reality police action shows and
US Army commercials with heavy metal music soundtracks on MTV. We
are moving further from asking hard questions regarding the essence
of conflict and meditated reality and from being able to establish
our own world-view based on cross-checked information and facts.
The issue will not present a specific unified position towards
conflict but rather it aims to reveal tendencies, to surface hidden
agendas and issues, to reflect on multiple points of view and to open
a wide-ranging dialog. What is the role of artists and scientists in
this new era? Should art be completely independent of the politics of
violence? Should science?
Guest Editor Shirley Shor and Leonardo Electronic Almanac seek papers
discussing these and other topics that address the role and work of
artists and scientists in times of war.

cinemania[c] 2003: the second edition
an independent project consisting of exhibition and screenings, that is organized as the supporting programme to the 50th Pula Film Festival - call for artists
Our motiv was, again, the interest in film and visual culture. Background of this project as well as all last year's partecipants works can be seen at www.mmc-luka.org but due to devotion to the same concept and idea, we repeat in an improved version a fragment of last year's introduction that serves as a statement:
introduction
cinemania[c] ranges from the film treasury to cinephilia or mania. Although a concept is set as a frame, the show undermines the tyrany of control and the fetishism of the concept.
The relationship between art and cinema is the relationship between art and technology, and their history is the history of experiments in various fields. What developed from this symbiosis is the most ephemeral art of all - "the art of time". Considering the traces films left in our visual culture, the exhibition is going to explore the experience of watching movies, as well as the way cinematographic aesthetics shaped and continues to shape our mind, affecting our common perception of the world.
cinemania[c] is the product of a meta-media society that recycles its existing media images and where each work of art functions as a research lab in which the raw material is critically questioned and analysed. It is a "cut&paste" culture that inherited avant-garde techniques of editing and collage and joined them with the techniques of sampling and digital manipulation. In that way, the digital context as digitally expanded cinema protects and developes the tradition of independent, avantgarde and experimental cinema. But, more that anything else cinemania[c] is a hommage to Film/Movies, and we use this exhibition to show our love to it.
call for artists
Artists are invited to send the work that relates to the topics of cinema, cinephilia, cinemania, to the experience of watching films. By conceptualizing visual culture and moving images the exhibition will creatively engage with our experience of films and tackle our relationship towards specific films or cinema in general, different genres, film language, formal qualities. The exhibition will also address our understanding of society through popular culture and deal with the concepts of time and space as well as the looking strategies and presentation. By using various media formats like pictures, photographs, installation, video, animation, scratch tapes, net.art, presented either on CD ROM, VHS, DVD it is our intent that, through quotation and intertextuality, a new body is created which will demonstrate that correlation of film with other art forms can ensure an after life for the original work, long after its screening. cinemania[c] takes into account the role cinema has had so far in our visual culture...and pays the homage...
Call for artists is open from March 25th to June 15th 2003.
