CALL FOR PROPOSALS:: Techlab Digital Media Artist in Residence Program

Do you work with digital photography, video, or sound? Do you use computer hardware in your work? Or use surveillance or robotics technology? Is the Internet integral to your work? The Surrey Art Gallery is interested in project proposals from artists or artist teams using digital media, who are interested in becoming artists in residence. Artists in residence work in three equal capacities: as artists creating their own work; speaking to Gallery visitors about their work; and assisting the Gallery in the development and presentation of other current or upcoming electronic art programming. Two more projects will be selected. The next one will occur May - August 2003, the third in the winter of 2003-4.

Proposal Requirements
Send us your proposal by March 2003 that answers these questions:
1. Why do you want to be an artist in residence in the TechLab? (Write a cover letter)
2. Who are you? (Attach a current resume, documentation of completed artwork, and description of any similar experience)
3. What artwork do you want to make in the TechLab? (Include a project description)
4. How will you make your work? (Describe whether you plan to do research, or software programming, or editing, or construction on site, or whether you plan to work alone, or need partners or volunteers etc.)
5. What equipment and technology support will you require? (Include a list of your project requirements)
6. How would you prefer to interact with the general public? (Include a list of your ideas and preferences: i.e. welcoming drop in visitors, having set public hours, giving talks, demonstrations, workshops, working with school groups, having your computer screen projected while working etc.)
7. When would you be available to be on site at the Gallery? (Attach a tentative schedule of days/hours that you would prefer - the Gallery is open almost every day)

graphics, sound and video cards, colour printer, 3D surround sound unit with subwoofer,

Technical Support and Web site host:
The Lab's NT workstations and network will have limited technical support and a direct high-speed link to the Internet (some firewall limitations). The Lab's web site will be linked to the Gallery's web pages, which are hosted by the City's server. The Lab is also provided with a telephone, voice mail, and email.

Budget:
Each residency project will be compensated at approximately $20/hour and artists will be expected to work a regular weekly schedule on site for a period of four months (eg: a minimum of 21 hours/week x 16 weeks). Call for Papers:
Engineering Gender.
Configurations of Cybernetic, Virtual, and
Biopolitical Existence
Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet,
Muenster, Germany,
November 6 à 8, 2003.
genus à Muensteraner Arbeitskreis fuer gender studies

Call for papers for the conference ÑEngineering
Gender. Configurations
of
Cybernetic, Virtual, and Biopolitical Existenceâ, to
be held at the
Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet, Muenster,
Germany, November 6 à
8, 2003.

The discourses about the bio-, genetic, or information
technological
construction of human beings have an impact on the
images of Ñmanâ
as well as on the conceptualizations of identities and
genders. These
discourses appear to deal with drawing border lines
between nature and
culture. Based on the experience that Ñauthenticityâ
can be generated
artificially, it is impossible now to give a clear
answer the question
of what
is Ñnaturalâ. These shifts of border lines can be
assembled in a term
coined by Donna Haraway: The Ñcyborgâ " (cybernetic
organism) has
sparked off a number of controversies in the last
years.

The various definitions of cybernetic organisms
developed so far range
from the hybrid man-machines of science fiction via
real connections
between technology and biological organisms in modern
implant
medicine to the cyborg as metaphor of a subversive
existence. What is a
cybernetic organism à someone with a pacemaker,
artificial limbs,
medical implants, or the person moving in cyberspace?
What
implications do such man-machine compounds have on our
notions
of identities and formation of human subjects? And in
particular: which
gender(s) may the cybernetic existence have?

Reality can be simulated by means of information
technology. At the
same
time, it has been understood as a social construction.
Constituted and
Ñupdatedâ through a continuing repetition of
performative acts that
confirm discursive attributions, reality cannot be
Ñauthenticallyâ
experienced. In relation to the possibilities of
agency and experience,
is
there any qualitative difference between virtual and
Ñreal lifeâ
reality? If
yes, what can it do? Does virtual reality include the
opportunity to
create a
Foucaultian Ñother roomâ in which a subversion and
transformation of
the established gender identities is possible?

Not least due to the rapid developments in
biotechnological procedures,
genetic engineering, new technologies of reproduction,
and transplant
medicine, traditional ideals based on a notion of the
human body as
Ñclosedâ and autonomous are put into question. The
existence of
biotechnologies suggest a body in need of improvement
and in waiting
for
perpetual Ñcorrectionsâ: Genetically based
dysfunctions shall be
Ñcuredâ; reproduction can take place outside the
(female) body; cloning
might produce the Ñperfectâ man. Which utopian images
of the body lurk behind the controversial
biotechnological promises of
salvation? Do these promises emerge from a unifying
phantasm that
attempts to eliminate the Ñunsuitableâ, queer Other?
Is the
constructed-as-natural sex put up to discussion? Do
gender-related
cultural attributions perish?

There are too many different sides to these discourses
to leave their
analysis to one academic discipline only. The
conference will provide
representatives of all disciplines with a platform to
make creative use
of
scholarly differences. We explicitly welcome an
interdisciplinary
scholarly,
student and non-academic audience. Presentations are
expected to
address a non-expert audience and lay open the
speakerÇs disciplinary
and methodological approach.

Contributions may include scholarly presentations,
film screenings, art
shows, and performances. Panels will be formed to
address the three
focal points of the conference: cybernetics,
virtuality, and
biopolitics.
Proposals should not extend two pages in length and
include the title
of
the presentation, a brief abstract, and your name,
address, and
affiliation.
The deadline for proposals is April 30, 2003. Please
send proposals to
the following address or e-mail address (e-mail
attachments should be
in
word-compatible or pdf format):
genus
Muensteraner Arbeitskreis fuer gender studies
Bispinghof 5/8
48143 Muenster
Germany
genus@uni-muenster.de
genus will cover accommodation and travel expenses of
participants
giving a presentation and pay an allowance (amount yet
to be
determined)
for presentations.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you have further
questions or
suggestions.

============================================================
CALL FOR ENTRIES – COMMUNICATING CULTURE WITH DIGITAL
MEDIA
============================================================

Digital media make it possible to use virtual technology to
reconstruct buildings that have long since disappeared,
design and explore digital knowledge spaces using
innovative interfaces, integrate remote or digital rooms in
museums and exhibitions and develop new play-based,
interactive communication strategies.

netzspannung.org, the Internet platform for digital art and
culture, is planning to show examples of these different
approaches. The aim is to provide an overview of the
different strategies, from purely digital spaces (Internet,
VR, CD-ROM, DVD) through to AR and mixed-reality scenarios
and media concepts that are based in or take a subordinate
role to physical space.

This overview should show:
> how digital media are used to communicate cultural
heritage
> what new possibilities are being developed with digital
media in order to present cultural artefacts in a
media-based way
> how digital technologies complement the work of the
curator.

netzspannung.org is an online archive for digital art and
culture that presents current media-art, media-design and
IT-research projects. [For further information see
http://netzspannung.org/about/en]

This "Call for Entries" should ensure that the picture that
emerges is as wide-ranging as possible and that project
that are only just in the process of being created are
also included.

Send your project or suggestions for articles on the
subject to: redaktion@netzspanung.org
or publish your project directly on the Internet platform
at: http://netzspannung.org/netzkollektor/en
