Moscow International Film Festival
Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) is held since 1959 and gradually it has become one of most respectable and prestigious film-forums in the world. In 1973 MIFF was registered by the International Federation of Film-producers associations (FIAPF) as an «A» class film festival alongside with those in Berlin, Cannes, San-Sebastian, Karlovy Vary and Venice.

This is the fourth year Media Forum is organized as part of the Moscow International Film Festival. The role of new media in audiovisual art and culture received due recognition and Media Forum was immediately introduced into the official program of MIFF.

Media Forum is the first event of such scale in Russia and it reveals a new vision of the world of new media culture and new screen technologies to the professionals, critics and public in general. The objective of Media Forum is to demonstrate the connection between traditional and modern branches of screen culture, the impact of technological innovations on visual arts.

Media Forum as action is an exchange of ideas, infusion of new forces into contemporary culture and vice versa. It is an attempt to demonsrtate the logic of new thought and new communications. At the moment it is inside media culture that new ideas go through trial and approbation, ideas that cannot be realized in contemporary art context.

>>>About Trash art

Key words:
Trash – crash of machine (computer) logic
Trash – crash of user logic
Trash – failure of image creating
Trash – cracked art – isn’t to be identified, is unexpected by society, critics, doesn’t conform to the demands, wishes, logic
Trash – as fashion, style, freedom

Idea
Today it is necessary to revive the original radicalism of the media-technologies. This is not a problem of technology, but a problem of philosophy and ideology. We are interested in projects that revolt against the technology itself. What do we need technologies for if they cannot express new ideas? These are old technologies. New technologies come first of all new objectives.

Today the concepts of “trash & trash art” have acquired quite a variety of interpretations. Our task is to confine them to categories conforming with new tendencies in ideology and culture.
For us “trash” stands for the positive radicalism in art, technology and forms of communication. Media Forum is the search for materials and criteria. The interaction of art and technology frames the conception within which our festival works.

What do we need technologies for if they cannot express the tendencies of new thought?

Ljubljana, Slovenija
Memefest
Memefest, International festival of radical communication
The regular competition has three main divisions: Communications Studies, Sociology and Visual Arts. There is also a separate Beyond… section with its own guidelines and divisions.
www.memefest.org
AWARDS: A winning entry will be selected from among graduate and postgraduate submissions in each category. Winners each receive a cash prize of 300 EUR.

Hungover from radical doses of branding and commercial information lately, we, the organizers of Memefest, have decided to help Slovenian and global youth fight the power while celebrating their strengths and talents.

As a “festival or radical communication”, Memefest sets out to explore the power that our disseminated ideas memes have to spin the social fabric. By encouraging the creation and dispersion of beneficial memes, we hope that we may bring some balance back into a brand-crazy world.

Last year, we called out those gifted in the fields of Communications, Sociology and Design to respond to a text on branding. You can view the resulting mayhem in our visual gallery. Memefest 2003 challenges writers to confront Thomas Frank’s text on cooption of dissent and visual artists to represent a “rethink” of their roles according to the principles of the First Things First Manifesto. For those who need a little more, we have provided a space to go Beyond… and innovate radical communications models which fall completely outside of the commercial paradigm.

JURY: This year’s competition jury is has been selected to reflect diverse, international perspectives on radical communications. Jurors include visual artists, writers, professors and communications professionals. Have a look through the bios provided under each division, these are names you might recognize!

COMPETTITION RULES:
1. The main festival competition is open to both full and part-time graduate and post-graduate students, regardless of age. Winners of awards will have to provide proof of enrollment. Note that participation in the Beyond... category is unrestricted.
2. Each student can register multiple works in a particular category. However, each work requires the submission of a separate registration form.
3. Each work can compete in only one competition category
.4. A single work can be registered by a group or collective. However, at least two thirds of a group must have student status. Names of all authors should be clearly indicated.
5. All international submissions have to be in English. However, studentsfrom Slovenia can hand in their works (essays and opinion pieces) in Slovenian with an English summary and keywords.
6. Previously published works may be submitted. Also, previously submitted academic work may be entered as long as it suits the competition's themes.
7. Works that do not comply with the minimum standards of format and content will not be eligible for awards.
8. Works have to be registered by the spring deadline of May 15th.
9. Anonymous works will not be taken into consideration.
10. Persons actively involved in MEMEFEST are not allowed to participate in the competition.
11. Persons younger then 18 years of age may not participate in the competition but may have their works exhibited.
12. Memefest will not use works sent in by the participants for commercial purposes.
