Free Art! Call for submissions
Revolutionary Art is Ours. At a time when our freedoms of speech are being restricted and corporate control of expression abounds, use your voice and celebrate art that is free for anyone to use: Create an antiwar piece and then put it in the public domain, free for anyone to use for any purpose. Take art back from corporate control, and give it to the people. Artists will make an antiwar piece -- painting, sculpture, video, poetry, anything -- that will be on exhibit for a month at Artists' Television Access in San Francisco, culminating in an event on June 20, 2003 where all visual pieces will be documented [digitally scanned, photographed] and then set free. The celebration will include revolutionary music, video, poetry, and performances by local artists who refuse to shut up. Audience members will put their names in a drawing and take home the originals. Visual and text-based work will then be downloadable online for anyone to use. Submissions are encouraged from people of all backgrounds, locations, and art levels. Early (press) deadline: May 14. Final deadline: May 28. For more information about submissions and for the entry form go to artistactionnetwork.org/freeart If you have questions or need more info after visiting the site, email free@artistactionnetwork.org.

Residency Opportunity for Artists and Writers
Caldera is located on the shore of a cerulean blue lake formed in the cinder cone of an extinct volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range of Central Oregon. In this extraordinary natural setting, Caldera offers residencies of up to five weeks to artists and writers during the fall, winter and spring. Founded in 1996, Caldera is a nonprofit interdisciplinary arts organization committed to fostering creativity, provoking experimentation and stimulating a deeper appreciation for the environment. Our 90-acre site at Blue Lake is surrounded by the Deschutes National Forest and is 17 miles west of Sisters, Oregon. Caldera supports the creative process and there is no expectation that resident artists produce a specific product. However, people who stay more than 14 days are strongly encouraged to give an informal presentation about their work during or after their residency. Public outreach activities could include an interview with the local paper, a workshop in a public school, a brown bag lunch or a public reading or talk at a venue in the Sisters area. We will work with each artist to organize an event that will meet his or her needs and interests. Applications must be postmarked or hand delivered to Caldera by the following deadlines: June 1, 2003 - Residencies September 15th through February 1st / November 1, 2003 - Residencies February 15th through June 15th. NET.ART EXHIBITION
Montreal, September 2003
http://www.mobilegaze.com
will address the notion of time as experienced in art and through technology. Most technological equipment (VCRs, CD-ROMs, Cassette players, DV and Hi-8 cameras) are equipped with a "pause" button – offering a momentary stop in the flow of information. The Web, in contrast, is a mediator for all digital media (sound, video, hypertext and images) which has historically been compared to a highway (Baudrillard) and exists through the constant ebb of information. will aim at intercepting this stream of information in order to provide a disruption within this endless expanse of data - by providing the viewer with a vantage point, a moment of reflection and a slowing down in his/her interactive viewing habits.
The exhibition will focus on web productions centered around AUDIO/SOUND or VIDEO and will be divided into these 2 categories.
+ Net.artists are invited to submit proposals for an on-line exhibition entitled to be presented by MobileGaze on its website.
+ Projects considered for this curatorial investigation should be created specifically for the web and should focus on audio/sound or video.
+ Only new projects will be considered (2003).
+ Artist fees will be paid.
+ The exhibition will be launched with a conference / event at the Sociéte des Arts Technologiques in Montreal in September 2003 and will remain online for a minimum of one year.

LGP Development Company Sponsorship
If you have always wanted to write a game, always wanted to do more with your skills, then this could be for you.
LGP is sponsoring the formation of a new company for development of games for the Linux platform. We are looking for the best and brightest to bring a brand new era to Linux gaming.
We are looking for eight developers, at least one of them with team leading experience, to come together and make the killer Linux game. What that game is, will be up to the group. Creative thinkers and excellent development skills should be the main traits of each applicant.
SO, what are the details.
Firstly, this is NOT a job. This is a future self-employment opportunity. We will not be paying a salary for this.
So, you are probably wondering why you would be interested.
1) When the game is complete, LGP will publish your game. We will pay 100% of the costs to have it produced, marketed, and retailed worldwide.
2) 70% of sales revenue will go to the development company, to be divided up as the team sees fit. The remainder of the money will go to LGP to pay for marketing, and other publishing expenses.
3) If your game is good enough, then you should earn enough money from it to allow you to fund future game development, pay your own wages, and really get into the game development industry!
4) Depending on how good the game is, how much the public like it, and any porting to other platforms, the revenue from the game could be a modest 50,000 pounds (75,000 US Dollars) up to a substantially larger sum in excess of a million pounds. We cant make any guarantees, but make a good game, and people will buy it.
So, how will it work? The following stages outline how we expect the process to work.
Applications
Initially we are asking people to send an application to us. Simply email devcompany@linuxgamepublishing.com with the following information.
Your Name
Your programming skills (including team leading skills)
A sample of source code, 2K or under (2048 characters, not including newlines, whitespace at the start of lines, or comments that are not code), written by yourself, that does something cool, in either C, C++, or x86 asm (along with a description of what it does).
Your feelings on the Linux platform and the gaming industry.
This last section is left deliberately vague as we wish to see the creative thinking side of applicants
Selection
LGP will select 8 people from all applicants. Our decision is final. These eight will be a mixture that we feel can best complete the task.
Introductions
Introductions will be held on an IRC channel, As developers will likely be geographically separated, this is where most conversation between developers will take place.
Naming
The first task will be for the group to think of a name for the company. This will help everyone to begin working together.
Game Selection
Next, the group will have to think what kind of game to be created. We arent looking for small games that can be made in a week, this should be a game that has mass appeal, playability, and replayability. No clones of existing games, nothing that will send people to sleep. Bar that, the choices are open. Ideally, can we make a new TYPE of game, instead of just another FPS/RTS/TBS. If a new genre cannot be discovered, can we think of a new angle on an existing genre. Original thinking would be a strong advantage here.
Leadership
LGP will, taking into account the wishes of the team, select a team leader. This person will be responsible for coordinating the project, making sure everyone knows what they are doing, and keeping things running smoothly. This person will not have hiring or firing powers, they must bring unsolvable issues to the LGP representative.
Developer Commitment
After the game outlines are made, it is possible some developers will not be interested in working with the type of game that is planned. At that point, they are free to walk away and we will find replacements from among the original applicants.
Contracts
Once the development team is committed, contracts will be sent for all to sign. These contracts will be outlining the details given here, and will protect the rights of both the developers and LGP
Development
Once development commences, each developer will be expected to make a commitment. A minimum commitment of 10 hours per week for each developer will be expected. If any one developer is not pulling their weight, then the rest of the developers will be able to bring this to the attention of the LGP representative, who may remove a developer if at least half of the development staff request it and LGP believes it is appropriate. Developers are obliged to make the minimum 10 hours a week commitment, but are encouraged to spend as much time as they can, to assure a reasonable development pace. Any developers requiring a break from working on the project must clear this with LGP, or will face removal from the team, and loss of all their future revenues.
Artwork/Level Design/Music
When the development has reached a suitable point where we know more about the art, level, and music requirements (if any), we will expand the team to include people with appropriate non-coding skills.
Testing
LGP will provide final testing and beta testing facilities, but in-development testing is the responsibility of the development team. If they wish, dedicated testers can be brought in to the project.
Release
When the game is ready, LGP will publish it.
As soon as the game is released, LGP will hand 90% of the development company over to the developers to do with as they will. They can close it, or use it to make more games, the choice is theirs.
Additional Rules:
LGP commits to publishing the game but reserves the right to not do so if we feel that publishing will harm our company. We will advise the developers in the planning stage if a game design is unsuitable, and as early as possible during development if development standards are not high enough.
The game must run on the Linux platform, but this does NOT exclude other platforms. The development team is strongly advised to consider cross-platform development, as each platform increases revenue. This is purely at the decision of the development team. LGP will market the game wherever we can for any platform it runs on.

OPEN CALL FOR ENTRIES
Budget Gallery, San Francisco.
"The Great Debate" Show
June 1 - June 8, 2003
Opening Reception - June 1, 5-7pm
Deadline: May 15, 2003
http://www.budgetgallery.org
-------------
Introduction:
-------------
The Budget Gallery's goal is to provide high art at low prices to unsuspecting customers. We achieve this goal by organizing gallery style art shows in the unused public spaces found in urban areas. From empty walls to empty buildings, the Budget Gallery uses any space that is available and highly visible during the day. Space is often prepared with white paint and signage so work will be as professionally presented as possible. Pieces will be labeled with the artists name, materials used, and asking price for the work. There will be an opening reception on June 1st.
All pieces not sold by the end of the the opening reception stay up for the course of the week with a price and contact phone number for interested buyers. The gallery is in co-opted public space with no security. Any work not sold at the reception can be sold, stolen, or vandalized during the rest of the show.
-----------------
Call for entries:
-----------------
All work that meets guidelines will be accepted for the show - in line with the Budget Gallery's belief that any art is better than commercial advertising. Work will either be purchased, stolen, or vandalized. Artists are encouraged to make pieces for this show with these inevitabilities in mind. Ideal pieces should catch the eye, capture the imagination, and invite extended viewing from passing crowds. Art that addresses the issues of public space are especially encouraged, but again, all work will be accepted.
Artists are encouraged to use the Budget Gallery as an opportunity to show work they may not normally present in other venues. Masterpieces are not required. Work in media other than the artists primary media is encouraged, along with older pieces, works in progress, studies, and so on.
Work should be priced to sell to the general public. All pieces not sold at the opening will be left on the wall for 1 week, after which they will be placed elsewhere. Those interested in your piece will be instructed to remove it, take it home, and contact the gallery regarding payment. Commission is arbitrary, optional, and decided by the artist. Work will not be returned.
-----------
Guidelines:
-----------
1. All work must haver our entry form attached.
2. Work must be able to be hung on a wall.
3. Please avoid pieces larger than 40 inches by 40 inches or any piece heavier than 25 pounds. If your piece exceeds these dimensions, contact the Budget Gallery before submitting your work.
4. Please deliver art with your preferred mounting hardware supplied. If no mounting hardware is supplied, work will be hung in the most convenient way possible (Starting with wood screws, then staples, twine, or tape).
6. Please submit a slide or digital photo of work (if possible) for our website.
7. Work must be received by May 15th , 2003
-----------
Submission:
