Submissions are open for Fibreculture's special edition of
M/C - a journal of media and culture: F I B R E
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
F I B R E
FIBRE is the tension between material and abstract. It names a tissue
composed of threads, but it also denotes 'roughage' - something that
can't be broken down any further - a dietary connotation for both body
and mind; and a moral association - integrity or backbone. FIBRE is
where flows meet resistance.
The strength and properties of invisible connections will determine the
cohesion or resistance of FIBRE, and its wider fabrics - economic,
social, cultural. The connective tissue rearranges geographies,
re-wiring the categories of urban and regional, of global and local.
Information reaches the speed of light - but it meets resistance
nonetheless, in the fibre and the fabric.
As the filaments are invested with value they also become a new
political terrain to be fought over, where control, ownership,
and dominance are up for grabs. FIBRE is a fulcrum of post-industrial
economic change, where public utility gives way to private corporation,
where citizen is re-cast as shareholder, customer, end-user. And yet,
only 3% of global network capacity is being used. In 'dark fibre' lies
the potential energy of networked multitudes.
** The editors of this special ::fibreculture:: edition of M/C are
seeking papers that take up the philosophy, politics and cultures of
networks. Suggested topics include:
. politics of bandwidth and access, broadband policy, Telstra, etc
. the problematics of 'content' in digital media;
. wired-writing ˆ email, listserves, threads and weblogs;
. P2P and other alternative forms of exchange;
. theorisations of 'platform' and convergence in cultural production;
. info-merciality and info-tainment;
. sub-cultural and counter-cultural access to fibre; 'war-chalking';
. micro-politics and community networking, weaving local fabrics;
. impact of the dotcom crash; loss of collective 'web' imaginary;
. fibre-dreaming; philosophies of fibre; digital materiality;
. archaeologies of networks, from copper to photonics;
. from PC to wireless and mobile technologies, a cultural shift?
. network space-time in old and new media; TV after the Net;
deadline for submissions: 23 JUNE 03
article length: 1000-1500 words
An open peer-review process will take place on the
Fibreculture listserve commencing 23 MAY 03.
review cells will be finalised shortly. If you'd like to
take part as a reader, please email me ASAP.
Please note that draft submissions for open review will

We are planning a Rock A Mole festival in Los Angeles for June. We
will feature art, film, music, and poetry by or about at risk youth,
immigrants, blue collar workers, welfare recipients, the homeless, and
prisoners. We hope that you or people you know or work with will be
interested in participating.
Do you or someone you know have some work that should be
represented? Let us know what you're thinking. We also see this festival as
a giant networking opportunity, where we can share experiences, resources,
ideas, and visions. Thanks!
Peace--
The Rock A Mole crew
ROCK A MOLE'S VISION:
A STREET FOCUS, A BETTER FUTURE
Who We Are: We're Rock A Mole (rhymes with guacamole) Productions. We are
musicians, writers, filmmakers, and artists. Our founders include Luis
Rodriguez, author of Always Running, and Ernie Perez of the Boxing Gandhis.
What We Do: We put on grassroots cultural festivals (eight so far) that
feature music, art, poetry, and film by or about at-risk youth, immigrants,
the homeless, welfare recipients, and prisoners.
What We Believe: Anyone who spends any time in the streets, the jails, or
the homeless shelters constantly encounters talented artists of every
kind--from painters to poets, from video wizards to musicians. These
marginalized people are our sisters and brothers. They are demonized in the
media as the ones who are responsible for our society falling apart. That
is a lie. The volcanic flow of creativity in the streets of America
challenges us all to unite around a vision of a peaceful America where
everyone's needs are met.
Who We're Down With: We are a part of the Poor People's Economic Human
Rights Campaign (PPEHRC), a nationwide coalition of over fifty poor
people's organizations. These organizations are led by the poor themselves.
The goal of the PPEHRC is to end poverty, not manage it. Check them out at
www.kwru.org.
What's Next: We have just finished up our first film, The Ultimate Song,
which is about music's role in the struggle to end poverty. The film brings
together the leaders of the poor in America with musicians such as Wyclef
Jean, Bruce Springsteen, Brother Bank, Rage Against the Machine, Jackson
Browne, Krown Ju-Elz, Steve Earle, and Ice T. We will preview the film soon
at the biggest Rock A Mole festival yet.
What You Can Do: If you like our approach, link up your artistic or
organizing skills with ours. Contact us at Rock A Mole Productions, P.O.

Composers - Interactive Works and Electronic Music
Northwest Electro Acoustic Music Organization - NWEAMO
(Portland OR)
NWEAMO 2003: The Exploding Interactive Inevitable October 3-5, 2003: Portland, Oregon (B-Complex) October 10-12, 2003: San Diego, California (San Diego State University)
The Northwest Electro-Acoustic Music Organization (NWEAMO) is seeking electro-acoustic works for its fifth annual international festival of electronic music.
Works may be representative of all styles and aesthetics, from the classical avant-garde to the fringes of experimental pop.
MAIN THEME: This year we are hoping to spotlight audience-interactive electro-acoustic works. These works should employ some form of audience participation to complete their execution. Interaction may be physical, intellectual, sensory, and/or other type, and it may be achieved through technological, entirely human, or other means. To facilitate electronic interaction, NWEAMO will provide a wireless access point (802.11) with a connection to the Internet.
PLEASE NOTE: NWEAMO also welcomes submissions of electro-acoustic works that DO NOT involve audience interaction. Preference will be given to works that feature a live performance element.
Composers must attend the festival. There is a $15 submission fee. NWEAMO is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization and all money raised goes toward promotion and production.
To view the full version of this call for works (including submission guidelines) and to access further information about NWEAMO 2003: The Exploding Interactive Inevitable, please visit http://www.nweamo.org
