CALL FOR ENTRIES: 52nd Melbourne International Film Festival - Short Film Competition

Melbourne International Film Festival (July 23 to Aug 10), Australia's largest and longest-running film festival, is now calling for short film entries. The International Short Film Competition is the most prestigious in Australia, and one of the most highly regarded short film competitions in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2003 over AUD$25,000 will be awarded- including $7000 for the Grand Prix.

Each year the competition represents the cutting edge of short filmmaking from across the globe, screening over 100 films across fiction, documentary, animation and experimental categories. Intro
MIF is a multi-media festival of performances, exhibitions, happenings,
music, sound and visual installations, video and cinema, urban
interventions, animation, workshops, solidarity and engagement with the
aim of supporting the infiltration of cultural, artistic and socially
engaged activities in the urban life and creating the ground for meetings
of young artists and activists.Its aims are both artistic performances and exchanges. Exchange means to
create, to provide, to support, to discover and to promote the common aims
and convictions. Consequently the festival is from and to everyone; all
the people who will decide to give time, tools, work and part of their
lives to the idea of the MIF.We don?t provide the performance space to artists only, but to engaged art
also.MIF presents alternative ways of art and expression and gives an
opportunity to local young artists and activists to express their ideas
and a different vision of the world....In the past six years, more than 600 artists, from ten European countries,
took part in this festival.
Mostar Intercultural Festival 2003
7th edition of MIF will present the need for creative space in Mostar.
The festival will have its central location in Santiceva street (former
division line), and a task to use the creative potential to intervene in
and transform the destroyed and neglected part of town turning it into a
creative and artistic laboratory. Locating the festival in this place
symbolically represents the civic and cultural reconstruction of the city.
Application Criteria

We invite artists and activists to apply with their ideas and projects in
accordance with the theme ËspaceÈ (lack of space / need for space).? Exhibitions and happenings
Exhibitions and happenings sector has the wish to gather artists from
different fields to exchange skills and experiences, in order to create a
common space. We invite you on a residence, to intervene actively and
collectively in our two ?zones?:No-weapon zone: We are looking for artists and activists who want to state
a strong sign of non-violence and anti-militarism, to find creative
solutions for peaceful communication and exchange.Sexual identity/ies- zone: We are particularly looking for artists working
in the field of gender issues. Our goal is to question role models based

Performing arts and dance, with the accent on, but not exclusively, use of
space, importance of space, security of the space and identification with
it.All sorts of street spectacles (juggling, circus, marching bands etc.)
that can provide direct link with the audience and bring the art to the

gender issues and human relations.? Music
Concerts, free sessions, sound installations and DJ-ing, of all music
styles welcome.We are also looking for musicians ready to experiment and create together
with other artists during the festival as well as give music support to
street spectacles, video, exhibitions and happenings and urban

The cinema and video sector aim to propose a mix of different approaches
of film production. To support this aim, the cinema sector presents recent
long length international features in 35mm in open-air screenings, as a
dream and emotion provider for any generations. The selection of these
movies will be done by mifoc.In the same time, the video sector is a collective space of expression for
every artists who wish to present their works by the video media, so
presentation and/or retrospectives of short films (animation,
experimental, documentary, activists movies, etc?) in video (VHS, DV or CD
only) for indoor and/or outdoor screenings. We invite artists to join for
the video nights, which are dedicated only to video works, (pictures and
sound together as a complete art) or for various happenings, which are
connecting exhibitions concerts and performances, (pictures being a
support and a link with concrete movement of performers, live music,
picture installation, civil society zones, etc.)? Workshops
Active, productive, constructive and educational workshops, using
recycled, natural or other materials with the aim to share and teach
skills, create collective exhibitions and creatively transform the central
location and the street.? Actions and interventions
We invite everyone to create together urban interventions daily during the
festival, manifest the cultural and civic action and create the visual
image of the festival. In this aim we will organize thematic street
actions, media presentations and round tables.

Antiwar Poster Exhibition

Frank Shifreen, Drinkink, an art and research collective based at Columbia
University , The New York Arts Journal - Abraham Lubelski-publisher , and
an international web group of antiwar artists and organizers, are
collaborating on Antiwar exhibitions to be held at the Offices of the New
York Arts Journal and Macy Gallery, Teachers College,Columbia University,
and other venues. There will be an Internet and video part of the show,
but the visual art basis will be a antiwar poster show , in any medium, in
only two sizes , 22X30 (inches), and 24X36(inches). A poster can be any
combination of image, graphic or text, and can be created using
traditional art techniques, photography or computer on paper. The
exhibition will be held at Macy Gallery, Columbia University, (June 9 to
27th) and the gallery in the offices of the New York Arts Journal. all
accepted work will be put on a web site created for the show. Other venues
will be announced later, dates for show to be announced by Feb. 15th.

BEYOND THE MOMENT: A student-curated exhibition at Artists Space Call for
Submissions: Deadlline, February 25, 2003

Through installation, performance art, new media works Beyond the Moment
will explore the idea of futuristic environments. This project will be
featured at Artists Space May 2003. The work shown in this exhibition will
encourage its audience to become engulfed by utopian emotions, which are
not normally experienced in everyday life. Ultimately, this show will
force one to expand his/her idea of new world possibilities and blur the
line between fantasy and reality.

Beyond the Moment will be curated by high school students from ABACA‚s
Satellite Academy Curatorial Studies class, aged 16-21. Student curators
will organize all aspects of the project including developing
interpretations of artists‚ work, writing publicity materials, and
developing exhibition theme.

HONORARIUM
Participating artists (or artist teams) will be paid an honorarium of $300
in June 2003.
No other money will be granted.

ELIGIBILITY
The call for proposals is open to all artists. A professional degree or
membership to an organization is not required. Collaborators will be
reviewed by the same standards as individual entries. International
artists are welcome to apply. However, ABACA will not be responsible for
travel or accommodation costs.

FORMAT
Only 35mm color slides of entries or 1/2" VHS videotapes will be accepted
for review. Label each slide with your name, title of work, dimensions of
work, and date completed. (Please place a dot in the lower left corner of
the slides to indicate direction.) You may submit two slides for each
piece entered. If you submit a VHS tape, student curators will review up
to three minutes of your work. Clearly mark the outside of the tape with
your name and title(s) of works, and cue the tape to the segment you want
the curators to review. A SASE must be included for return of entry
materials.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The completed form, accompanied by a maximum of three slides or one VHS
tape must be received at the ABACA offices by Feb. 25th, 2003 at 4:00pm.
Submission of the entry card indicates acceptance of all conditions in the
"Call for Entries".

ARTIST NOTIFICATION
If your work is selected, you will receive a letter of acceptance by March
15th. At that time you will be notified of the installation, opening
reception, and de-installation times. Slides of work that is not accepted
will be returned by April 15th, only if a SASE is provided.

cover art. Published quarterly by the University of Chicago Press and

ACC Gallery
9th European Studio Programme
AIR programme for European artists (max. age 35) who desire to produce
works of art in accordance with the outlined theme. Three artists will be
selected by a jury, each of whom will one after the other spend three
months living and working in Weimar.
STUDIO: Located in the historical municipal Atelierhaus, about 10 minutes
walk to the ACC gallery in the town center. The studio is 30 m2 with good
light. Ten other Weimar artists work in studios in the house. The
Atelierhaus has a small printmaking workshop for etching, lino, wood and
screenprint. The studio has no specialist equipment but basic tools.

ROOM AND BOARD: rent-free furnished apartment in the City of Weimar
Atelierhaus (30 square metres) with telephone, fax , answering machine and
PC-Laptop (without access to the internet); food and drink at ACC
Café-Restaurant at reduced prices (70 %).

PARTICIPATION: European artists (max. age 35) who desire to produce works
of art in accordance with the outlined theme. Three artists will be
selected by a jury, each of whom will one after the other spend three
months living and working in Weimar.

DISPLAY AND EXHIBITION: ACC provides a curator who develops conception and
publication together with the artists. During the residence the curator
will decide together with the artist whether and how selected work of the
2003 ACC Studio Programme will be presented at the ACC Gallery in 2004.
Where appropriate, works of art will be displayed in public spaces in
Weimar for time periods to be agreed upon with the artists. In case of a
group-exhibition of all Studio Programme Participants a small catalogue
will be produced. The artists are expected to be present during
preparation and at the opening of the exhibition.

ACC COLLECTION: One or two works of art by each artist completed in the
course of the Programme will become a part of the ACC Gallery Collection.
The gallery and the artist will select the works together.

WORK PERIODS: 1. April 1 ˆ June 30, 2003
2. July 1 - September 30, 2003
3. October 1 - December 31, 2003

STIPEND: The selected artists will receive a monthly stipend of 750 •.
(Artists in residence are expected to spend most of the time in Weimar.)
In addition: Free entry to municipal institutions, e.g. museums.
Participants are responsible for their own telephone bills and have to
care for their medical insurance.

LANGUAGES: German and English are official languages of the Studio
Programme. Participants should have a good knowledge of either English or
German.

TRAVEL: The participants must cover their own travel costs, although the
programme attempts to find additional financing in cooperation with the
artists.

programmers and designers to contribute works to the Nanofestival and

software-art. This time we want especially encourage creative people from
Middle and Eastern Europe to submit, since these countries has a very long
tradition of progressive film culture.

Nanofestival v.01 is a no-budget, on-line art festival for extreme short
(!max. 10 sec.!) web movies and software art. The event is organized by
ZEROGLAB, an independent digital art-lab in Rotterdam. We are planning the
festival as a fast sequence of events, with a different theme every time.
