ANTI Festival
contemporary art festival seeks artists
For the second time Kuopio is the scene for the ANTI-festival from the 11th to the 14th of September 2003. The ANTI -festival offers a venue for new and unexpected ideas to be realised in a city environment by means of environmental and live art. Artists are sought to fill the program with works that engage in interaction with city culture.
The program for this event consists of works by artists that have been either invited or chosen on the basis of applications. The ANTI-platform opens the stage for all forms of new ideas. The pieces or performances will be selected on the basis of applications that need not heed any specific format. The applications need to have been received by the 28th of March 2003. The platform welcomes applications from artists, designers, artistic teams and art students of all disciplines.
The ANTI -event acts as a forum for radical arts, offering an alternative route for presenting non-commercial art outside the conventional mainstream channels. In choosing successful applicants the ANTI -event gives priority to fresh forms of artistic expression like environmental art, light, sound and installation work, as well as performance art.
THE CONTENTS OF ANTI-APPLICATIONS
The event seeks to activate 12 previously selected sites/environments either conceptually or through the use of inside/outside space. The artist(s) choose(s) a location for his/her/their piece from the ones given on the list (see next page). In terms of the spirit of the event it is essential for the applications to take into consideration the audience and punters that are already present at each location. The piece can also somehow combine various locations. In regards to works of a limited duration it is advisable to also consider the time of day in which they will be presented.
Being tied to a location is an extremely important factor when it comes to assessing and selecting performance- as well as sculptural works. It is hoped that, on top of the elements already present in a given space, full advantage is taken of the opportunities awarded by the use of light and sound as constituents of environmental and performance pieces.
The ANTI -event will not necessarily pick a suggested work that is not accompanied by a proposal regarding its placement into one of the locations listed. Although, after a suggestion has been submitted the event's artistic management team may suggest that the artist(s) do(es) the piece in one of the 12 locations on the list if one has not been chosen but the suggestion is otherwise interesting.
THE FORM OF APPLICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Applications must include a work plan and a construction schedule (1 page), technical requirements of the piece, estimated costs and the applicant's CV. Technical details of suggested pieces need not be entirely thought through and their technical development can proceed after the decisions of inclusion have been made. However, the essential idea and the maximum of estimated costs for the piece have to be given precisely already at this stage as the budget for the entire event will be set right after making the selections. The estimated costs must include the materials for the piece, travel expenses and a performing fee. In addition to the aforementioned, the event will also provide the chosen artists with accommodation and daily allowance. After the artists have been selected the size of their performance fees will be agreed upon and individual contracts will be signed with each artist.
Below is a list of the performance locations. It is hoped that the artists take the specific nature and audience of each into consideration and then make their work fit into the given space and environment. Photographs taken of the locations will be made available from the 15th of January onwards at www.antifestival.com. More pictures will be sent via e-mail if necessary.
The locations of the Anti -event are:
* A hairdresser's* * A child health advisory clinic* * A retirement home* * A post office and tax office in the old fire station building* * A restaurant* * A social welfare office* * A petrol station* * An apartment building/shopping centre under construction* * A bus station* * An old mill and its yard* * An underground sports hall (a cave)* * A home
APPLICATIONS ARE TO BE SENT WITH THE WORDS 'ANTI APPLICATION' CLEARLY MARKED ON THE ENVELOPE.

European Journal of Women's Studies
Call for paper, special issue: Spectacular women
A special issue of EJWS (2004/3) will be published about women in the performing arts.
Women's studies have highlighted how crucial the field of representation is to the shaping and definitions of gender and sexuality. We would like to focus on the arenas of theatre and the live performance, trying to approach these areas with special attention to the perspective of women practitioners.
Actresses and performers, women playwrights, directors, choreographers, and women managers are social subjects, in several respects:
* as artists, they create ways of performing, representing and enacting 'femininity' and 'masculinity', they are the agents and authors of cultural experimentation with the issues of gender;
* as professional women with a long tradition of 'public characters' they shape their lives on the ridge of the couplet "public/private", and have often emerged in time as influent role-models for female identity.
We call for a (scholarly) approach to the performing arts, focusing on women, not so much as the object of the politics of representation, but as subjects actively involved in the shaping of such practices.
Possible areas of investigation:
Languages and codes of expressions
Which languages, aesthetic codes, forms of expressions have been privileged by women practioners? Which specific representative, rhetoric and narrative devices have they adopted and developed?
Narrating the body
Which 'body' do the artists of live performance narrate in the theatre, in dance, in body art? How do the different and opposite 'mythologies' of the natural body and the cultural body inform these narratives?
Leadership and power in the performing arts
Given the collective nature of the performing arts, it is important to investigate the relational outlook and the working methods of women choreographers, directors and managers. How do they practice authority; what specific modes and strategies do they adopt or invent for exercising their artistic leadership?
The female gaze
Can we speak of a gendered audience and of gendered reception? Which are the strategies of women practitioners for addressing the gaze of their audiences, and when/why do they develop specific needs or modes of structuring the female gaze? What kinds of relations do evolve between a performer (or a group of performers) and its female public?
Off stage
Theatre and the performing arts offer powerful channels of expression and self-expression, of role-playing and of social playing. In the last century they have found a specific place (and market) in social life and education through the widespread practice of workshops and courses. The time has come to start a history and sociology of these forms of self- and social/collective expression that takes into account their gendered nature.
Articles should be prepared according to the Manual of Style available on request.

Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten
International application for 2004
The Rijksakademie is one of the leading Dutch 'Institutes for practical study in the visual arts'. Each year the Rijksakademie invites 30 new participants, with a work period of 12 up to 24 months.
Work period and annual fee
A work period at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten runs from January to December. Admission is in the first instance for one year. Possible continuation for a second work period is decided by mutual agreement. Every year, about thirty of the studios become available for new applicants.
During the work period, the Rijksakademie offers a wide range of facilities: a studio, work budget, technical workshops, a library, a canteen etc.
Participating artists can take advantage of guidance from, advice by and discussions with artists and theoreticians (advisors) and other professional from all over the world.
A participating artist will receive an annual stipend of €8.850 per annum for living expenses (€737 per month). The annual fee of €1.500 must be paid before commencement of the work period.
Participation contribution
The Rijksakademie depends on financial support from governments, business community and non-profit foundations for the maintenance and development of its activities. Every participant is requested to cooperate in raising funds to support the actual cost of participation, e.g. from sources in the country of origin. The target funding is €10.000 per work period per participant. The staff of Stichting Trustfonds Rijksakademie can advise on this.
The application and selection process
Every year, the Rijksakademie receives over 700 applications from which about 30 artists, roughly half of whom come from the Netherlands, are selected for participation. An initial selection is be made on the basis of visual material (slides, videotapes, cd-rom and in certain cases original work) and a work plan. A committee of about 10 of the Rijksakademie's associated advisors make the selection on grounds of demonstrable quality and potential for future development. A number of selected candidates are invited for an interview (in June). The interview takes place at the Rijksakademie and is followed by final selection. Following the interview, applicants will be informed of the decision by post by the end of June. If selected, this leaves some six months for practical matters such as arranging accommodation in Amsterdam and raising the participation contribution mentioned before.
The applications procedure for the work period 2003 has closed.
Applications for the work period 2004 must be sent by March 31, 2003.
