Native American Artists
Exhibition Opportunity - Artrain USA
(Ann Arbor MI)

Artrain USA, the nation's only traveling art museum on a train, presents a contemporary Native American exhibition (April 2004-December 2007), open to recent works that use or respond to technology by Native American artists. All media will be considered, including digital, CD-ROM, and video, related to technology and/or the modernity of cultures. Artists interested in having their work considered should send resume, artist statement, slides or photographs of work and slides or pictures of previous installation if available. Please limit the number of entries to 3 per applicant. Due to the nature of our gallery maximum space allowed per piece is 6 ?' in height x width that can vary x 3' in depth. Please describe use of space and any special requirements needed.

Summary of Exhibition
Artrain USA's 15th exhibition focuses on how Native artists are influenced by the popular culture of today and explores the commonalities of Native and non-Native people in North America. The exhibition is divided into three sections, with the third section focusing on the Modernity of Cultures. Today's high tech products are often driven by the age of computers and new technologies as they influence Americans' lifestyles. Native artists are using computers, video and CD-ROM to explore new ways of art making while retaining the connection to the traditions of Native art. Curated by Joanna O. Bigfeather, the exhibition will travel onboard Artrain USA from 2004 through 2007.

Information about Artrain USA
Artrain USA is just what its name implies - a train that carries art to people throughout the country. It is a gateway to the arts and exists as an arts outreach project. Its mission is to deliver visual art exhibitions and educational programs to cities without access to traditional museums and to encourage the development of local cultural programs. The outcomes of Artrain USA's programs are multiple and benefit both individuals and communities. The most obvious outcome is how Artrain USA's art exhibitions, art education programs and demonstrating artists encourage people to explore and develop their artistic and creative interests. Broader outcomes result from the all-inclusive community effort required to host Artrain USA. These efforts induce cross-cultural relationships among diverse populations, arts organizations, educators, local businesses, local government and volunteers. These relationships in turn result in broader awareness and the creation of new arts agencies, education programs, community development activities, funding opportunities and exhibition facilities. Founded in 1971, Artrain USA is headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI. Since its inception, Artrain USA has presented its exhibitions and related art education programs in more than 725 communities in 44 states and welcomed more than 2.8 million people. Artrain USA has been featured in such publications as the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Washington Post and has been broadcasted on CNN and CBS Sunday Morning

GUERNICA Project
The background: U.N. officials covered up a tapestry reproduction of Pablo Picasso's anti-war painting GUERNICA during Colin Powell's presentation of the American case for war against Iraq.
This attempt to censor the free art should be met with thousands of new versions of GUERNICA!

Those of us who are able to imagine the horrors, sufferings, pain and grief caused by war are also able to see the provocation in this act of censorship against an artwork that has these effects of war as its theme.

It is arrogant and naive to believe that GUERNICA can be censored when it becomes too embarrassingly relevant. Now the result will be the opposite: GUERNICA will re-appear in a number of versions all over the world!

trans-art - a gallery and a group of four artists in Trondheim, Norway - now call upon fellow artists to create new, updated versions of this great, anti-war painting. This can be done as paintings, drawings, installations, performances etc.

We would be very grateful if you could send us documentation of your version by mail. Pleas use standard web formats (jpg, gif, mov, mpeg, ram).

Send documentation, comments or relevant links to e-mail below.
We will present the documentation on our web pages.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO OTHER ARTISTS!
