TIMES SQUARE ART PROJECT 2003 REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS:Ê DEADLINE FOR INITIAL PROPOSALS:Ê FEBRUARY 7, 2003

A NEW OPPORTUNITY

Since the mid-1970s, Creative Time has curated annual, site-specific, and temporary public group exhibitions that showcase emergent artistic practices of all disciplines.Ê With an invitation from the Times Square Business Improvement District (BID), Creative Time will approach this visually dynamic and adventurous neighborhood to mount our next group exhibition in the fall of 2003.Ê

THE TIMES SQUARE ART PROJECT gives artists a rare opportunity to show their work in the most visible destination in the world.Ê Creative Time’s primary goal is to offer artists and curators the opportunity to develop outdoor, site-responsive projects that will promote a vision of Times Square’s future, add depth to it’s visual spectacle, and address Times Square’s economic and social challenges with humor and intelligence.Ê With this in mind, we request proposals from both artists and independent curators who can engage the public’s imagination and experience in this spectacular environment.

OBJECTIVES:

Our primary focus is to present an imaginative and dynamic group exhibition by commissioning a series of innovative site-specific projects throughout the Times Square district that will:

Give artists and curators the opportunity to work in one of the most popular destinations in the world.

Activate Times Square’s transitional public spaces and explore a range of experiences in the entire Times Square district.

Balance the strong corporate presence with visible cultural actions to highlight New York City’s Creativity.

Focus on engaging the workers and residents in the neighborhood.

Enliven the pedestrian experience through their discovery of small-scale and more visible temporary interventions in the landscape.

Encourage intimate public exchange (could be about manners, secrets, tales and truths!)

Map the public experience through graphic, digital, sonic, and textual means.

Engage the public across generational, ethnic, racial, geographic, class, and educational boundaries.

APPROACH TO GEOGRAPHY:

Instead of designating a specific block or venue in Times Square, we invite you to define and discover possible locations for activation.Ê Sites may range from roll-down gates and commuter corridors to vacant walls in parking lots to the empty niches on building faŸades.

We will host 3 walkabout orientation sessions on January 17, 21 and 24th to answer questions and suggest possible sites that we have discovered (see site considerations).Ê In tandem with the distribution of this RFP, Creative Time is working with the Times Square BID to develop key relationships with sponsors and site hosts.Ê This will help us acquire permissions for project locations once final proposals are selected and deemed.

Constructed Life: Scenarios of Fiction
among computer games, cyber-sex, nanobytes and robotic arts

One impact of global medias on culture and economy, on politics and society is the progressive substitution of the mechanisms of the social construction of reality by the mechanisms of the media construction of reality. The media are not only fields of action but also the constructors of prescriptions for the action. «How to make things with media»: that's the performative turn of media society.

>From laptop-music to the standardized entertainments industry, from the computer game to genetic engineering, from the daily «chat» in the Internet to the use of intelligent tools, we see the increase of constructibility and artificiality. Whether in business and in correspondence, whether in leisure time or in private relationships - for their organization we use the virtual data space.

This year the \\international\media\art\award wants to know from artists all over the world: How do you see the «Constructed Life»? What is your vision of our future? Where are the chances and dangers of this development?

- Peter Weibel -

The competition for the \\international\media\art\award 2003 is being jointly organised by Südwestrundfunk Baden-Baden (SWR) and ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe in cooperation with the Swiss television station SF DRS, and ARTE. This award is the successor to the International Video Art Award, awarded for the first time in 1992. The general term »media art« is intended to provide a forum on the television and in the general public for artistic videos as well as other media and interactive arts projects.

Organised Sound
An International Journal of Music and Technology

Call for articles and works

Volume 8, Number 2
Issue thematic title: Sound Installation
Date of Publication: August 2003
Publishers: Cambridge University Press

Issue Co-ordinators: Garth Paine (gpaine@dmu.ac.uk) and Leigh Landy
(llandy@dmu.ac.uk)

Sound Installation

Sound inherently occupies space. It acts upon the space and, in turn, is

conditioned by it. Space and time are inexorably linked in the sonic
domain.

Many musicians, composers and artists have found the sound installation
to
be a powerful vehicle for expression, whether they are making explicit
the
inter-relationships between sound and space (acoustics, psychoacoustics,

etc.) or reflecting on the more abstract notions of human experience.
"Organised Sound" is interested in exploring how sound installation is
viewed by contemporary practitioners, critics and theorists. Sound
installation practice has been well established for some decades, yet
there
has been relatively little published in this area, particularly in terms
of
critical studies.

We invite submissions that address the creation of works where the
primary
medium is sound, and where the work addresses, fills, changes and above
all,
requires space for its execution. Works to be discussed may be designed
for
physical spaces, be they architectural (public, or civic environments,
or
specialist environments such as art galleries and museums) or
environmental
spaces (outdoors, underwater, etc.), or they may be designed for virtual

space (Virtual Reality systems, game consoles, the internet), or
conceptual
works for imaginary space. Works may be focused upon the demands of the

chosen site, as is true for most site-specific works, or take a generic
approach to site. They may also be designed to address a public,
select,
private or non-existent audience.

Please note that "Organised Sound" also accepts articles outside the
theme
of each issue at any time.

Deadline for submissions is 1 March 2003. Submissions may consist of
papers
with optional supporting audio and/or audio-visual material that will be

presented as part of the journal's annual CD-ROM (to appear with issue
8/3).
Additional multimedia material may also be placed on the Cambridge
University Press website.

Enquiries should be addressed to Garth Paine (gpaine@dmu.ac.uk) or Leigh

Landy (llandy@dmu.ac.uk).
