The 2004 Whitney Biennial
http://www.whitney.org/exhibition/biennial.shtml
Featuring the latest work by emerging and established American artists, the 2004 Biennial Exhibition is the Whitney Museum of American Art’s signature survey of contemporary American art. The seventy-second in the series of Annual and Biennial exhibitions inaugurated in 1932 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the 2004 Biennial will be on view from March through May 2004. The list of selected artists will be announced toward the end of 2003.
The Biennial is organized by a team of three Whitney curators: Chrissie Iles, curator of film and video; Shamim M. Momin, branch director and curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria; and Debra Singer, associate curator of contemporary art.
In naming the curatorial team for the 2004 Biennial, Maxwell L. Anderson, the Whitney’s Alice Pratt Brown Director, stated, "Throughout its history, every Whitney Biennial has taken a fresh approach. Building on the successful 2002 Biennial curated by Larry Rinder, which made a case for a new phenomenon of art-making practices across the U.S., we are turning to three curators at the Whitney to present the most significant new work by both emerging and established artists."
Iles, Momin, and Singer are working in consultation with all of the Whitney’s curators, including: Callie Angell, adjunct curator, Andy Warhol Film Project; Barbara Haskell, curator of early twentieth-century art; Michael Hays, adjunct curator of architecture; David Kiehl, curator of prints; Janie C. Lee, adjunct curator of drawings; Christiane Paul, adjunct curator of new media arts; Marla Prather, curator of postwar art; Lawrence Rinder, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator of Contemporary Art; and Sylvia Wolf, Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography.
The Bucksbaum Award
The Bucksbaum Award will be given for the third time during the 2004 Biennial Exhibition. Endowed by trustee Melva Bucksbaum and her family, The Bucksbaum Award is given by the Whitney every two years to an artist chosen from among those in the Biennial. At the last Biennial, it was bestowed on Irit Batsry for her film, These Are Not My Images (Neither There Nor Here) (2000). In 2000, Paul Pfeiffer was the first recipient. The award includes a grant of $100,000, a two-year artist-in-residency at the Museum, and an exhibition in the Whitney’s Contemporary Series. Click here to find out more about the Bucksbaum Award.
Submissions
All submissions to be considered for exhibition in the Biennial should include the artist's biography or resume, a brief description of the proposed work, and between six and eight images. Recommended formats for images include slides, computer printouts, digital images on a CD_ROM, audio CDs, or VHS videotapes. We do not accept original artworks in the submission package.
The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2003.

SOUTH 1 (1-4 July 2004)
Call for expressions of interest due 4 August
The South Project is designed to gather together the cultural energies of
the south. Southern nations like Australia have normally looked north for
creative stimulus. There has been relatively little exploration of the
potential cultural traffic across the southern latitudes, including the
nations of the Pacific, Africa and South America. The South Project is a
journey to find out what these cultures might share in common.
South 1 is the first in a series of three biennial events. It will serve as
a gathering point for artists who will participate in South 2, a series of
exhibitions planned to coincide with Melbourne's 2006 Commonwealth Games. In
2008, South 3 will present an overview of the south, involving a consortium
of Melbourne's arts organisations. South 1 is a critical first stage when
the partners in this exchange have the opportunity to meet together, share
hopes, canvas fears and build futures.
There seems much to share. Cultures of the south face the challenge of
developing a balance between the traditional and modern worlds. Towards this
end, artists have a special role in forging new symbols and recovering the
old. Points of intersection for artists of the south include use of
indigenous and alien materials, stories of human and animal migration, the
ocean, the stars, lost worlds and the meeting of western and tribal values.
South 1 provides a space for gathering the evolving indigenous and
traditional cultures of the south, including Australian Aboriginal, Maori,
Pacific Islander, Zulu, Xhosa and Khoi San artists. At the same time, it
seeks 'non-indigenous' participation, such as Pakehas, non-Aboriginal
Australians, white and Cape Malay Africans. While craft plays an important
role as a lingua franca between cultures, South 1 embraces the broader
cultural, theoretical and historical context for such exchange.
The 2004 conference will serve a number of purposes:
" Bring together diverse voices of the south
" Facilitate networks between individuals and organisations
" Share ideas about methods of collaboration between traditional and
western artists
" Profile the arts as a language of place
" Provide opportunities for artists in traditional contexts to develop
individual profiles
South 1 will include:
" Cultural encounters
" Keynote lectures and panels
" Workshops combining traditional and modern practices
" Hypotheticals on the kinds of interactions that the south might
engage in
" Performances and stories of cultural phenomena unique to the south
South 1 will include a mix of theory and practice, reflecting both the ideas
and arguments at play in a focus on the south, as well as reflections of
lived experience by those at the intersection of modern and traditional
worlds. Satellite events are welcome.
South 1 will be at Sidney Myer Asia Centre, University of Melbourne 1-4 July
2004
" Expressions of interest due 4 August 2003
At this stage, initial expressions of interest are welcome from individuals
and organisations, including details of relevant practices and potential
participation. Please send these to Kevin Murray, Craft Victoria, 31
Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000 (email kmurray@craftvic.asn.au). For more
details about South, please visit www.craftvic.asn.au/south.
South 1 is partnered by an international conference British World 3.
The development of The South Project is auspiced by the Myer Foundation and
assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its
arts funding and advisory body.

MAD¥03 NET is an open call for participation, meant to serve as a LOUDSPEAKER FOR DIGITAL ARTISTIC CREATION during MAD¥03 2nd International Meeting of Experimental Arts which will take place in Madrid from October 24 to November 16 of 2003.
Conceived as a meeting place, it is an attempt to ìtake the pulseî of the current situation of the art circulating on the web and/or art that employs digital tools for its creation. It will serve as a showcase for these artistic expressions which, given their formal and conceptual characteristics, do not easily find exhibition venues in the present-day context.
Taking advantage of the idiosyncrasy of the Web, the intention is that MAD¥03 NET become a nerve centre of interventions by artists from the whole world during the three weeks of MAD¥03. Physical space is no longer a limitation to the exhibition of work and, using this advantage, MAD¥03 NET is to serve as a bridge between the artists and the public of diverse origins.
At the same time, the idea is to present other new forms of visual creation, still largely unknown to the unspecialised public. Our objectives are: to bring net-art and digital art closer to people and help them discover other spheres of artistic production, distant from the traditional forms (MAD¥03 NET SPECIFIC and MAD¥03 NET DIGIT); to propose a showcase for projects ìsleepingî in artistsí drawers (MAD¥03 NET PROJECT); and create a platform of ìdigital art net-magazinesî (MAD¥03 NET ZIN).
You can choose to participate in one or several of the open calls. There is no limit to the number of works, projects or "digital art net-magazines" that each artist or group of artists may present.
MAD¥03 NET SPECIFIC open call:
The web of webs is the only place imaginable for both the creation and the enjoyment of your work; works conceived specifically for the web; the conception, elaboration and visualisation of which only makes sense with Internet.
Any net art, web art, browser art, etc. work is admitted.
To participate:
Entry form and conditions: http://www.mad03.net/ing_conv_specific.php
MAD¥03 NET SPECIFIC: http://www.mad03.net/ing_specific.php
MAD¥03 NET DIGIT open call:
Any work in digital format: photography, video, infography, 2D or 3D animation, video gamesÖ
To participate:
Entry form and conditions: http://www.mad03.net/ing_conv_digit.php MAD¥03 NET DIGIT: http://www.mad03.net/ing_digit.php
MAD¥03 NET PROJECT open call:
This section is for all sorts of projects in which the use of digital technology is necessary, or mixed with other, not-necessarily-digital forms of artistic expression. Our intention is to offer a showcase of projects so they are not sleeping in your drawers and can come to light, with the hope of finding the support necessary to complete them.
To participate:
Entry form and conditions: http://www.mad03.net/ing_conv_proyect.php
MAD¥03 NET PROJECT: http://www.mad03.net/ing_project.php
MAD¥03 NET ZIN open call:
We would like to offer you a platform of digital art magazines, where we can present an ample catalogue of all the web sites in which creative people look for new ways and means of artistic experimentation, production and distribution. We use the term ìdigital art net-magazineî in an very wide sense here; all sorts of attempts to create a new support, medium, new formats for disseminating digital artistic creation in Internet fit in.
To participate:
Entry form and conditions: http://www.mad03.net/ing_conv_zin.php
MAD¥03 NET ZIN: http://www.mad03.net/ing_zin.php

Tate Webcasting Curator Job Available
Tate, London, UK
http://www.tate.org.uk
Salary: c.£27,000 pa
Fixed term contract until March 2006
Closing date for appliucations: 14 July 2003.
Job Advertisement
Tate are seeking a new Webcasting Curator.
Since implementing its pilot webcasting programme in May 2000, Tate has broken much new ground in this field. We were the first visual arts museum to run a regular programme of live webcasts, and we remain one of the few to make on-site educational programmes available to an international audience this way. Hundreds of hours of video and audio material are accessible via our webcast archive. And because a sound educational philosophy underpins our work, every webcast is offered free.
Your challenge will be to build on what we've achieved over the last three years. To maintain our position as pioneers, you will lead on the programme's development in close collaboration with our Digital Programmes and Interpretation & Education teams. You will take personal responsibility for managing the live webcasts, providing technical expertise and directing freelance producers and camera-operators. You will also redevelop the archive , making it more usable and accessible, and utilising it in e-learning projects.
It's essential that you have spent at least three to five years managing digital/online projects incorporating many partners and collaborators. You need hands-on experience of webcasting production and strong knowledge of the technical side. It's likely that you've already worked in the art and education field. You will certainly be aware of the issues surrounding online teaching and learning. You will also have a strong vision of webcasting's future at Tate.

Call for papers on feminist activist art
Women's Studies Dept., SUNY
(New Paltz NY)
Call for papers on feminist activist art to present on a panel at the SUNY New Paltz Women’s Studies Conference, Fall 2003. The theme of the conference is Feminism and Social Action. Deadline for receipt of abstracts: July 10, 2003.
Feminist activist art is as slippery to define as it has seemed easy to recognize. The difficulties in pinning down what might be a specifically feminist art activism are evident in how continuously, over the past two decades, contributors to the discourse on this cultural practice have debated, analyzed, derided or celebrated the core qualities—and the extent of effects—of a large set of widely varying exemplars.
Recent geopolitical events stimulated what has been seen alternatively as, on the one hand, one of the most impressive early appearances of a grass roots movement for peace and justice, and on the other hand one of the least effective, in terms of accessing the megaphone of the national media, and, ultimately, in influencing national policy.
Though many accounts of this latest resurgence of mass protest in the streets have pointed to the important role played by women, feminist perspectives in the various manifestos and other positions taken by various branches of the movement have been muted, if existent at all.
This panel will seek to define feminist activist art as it has been used in the recent peace and justice movement, and suggest how to assess its effects.
Papers dealing with feminist activist art utilized during the current peace movement emergence will be given preferential consideration, though historical accounts will be considered if they suggest ways to asses the effects of modes used recently. Artists who have produced feminist activist art deployed during the recent peace movement are especially invited to submit papers, however, slide showings of work alone, without analysis, will not be considered. Final papers should be no more than 3000 words. Images to be referred to during the talk should be listed.
Please send abstract, together with a brief biographical sketch to Mary Jo Aagerstoun: mjaag@wam.umd.edu
