Attracting more than 15.000 visitors, VIPER Basel is focussing on concepts and analysis of phenomena in society and culture challenged by the contemporary potential of analogue and digital media.

VIPER BASEL 2003
will scrutinise aspects of the current culture and media industry under the motto

[READY MADE CUSTOME MADE]

.................................................................................................................

VIPER Basel | Competition 2003 | Categories

VIPER Basel has revised its competition.
Works and projects can be submitted to the following categories:

[ IMAGINATION | PROCESSING | TRANSPOSITION ]

.........................................................................

[IMAGINATION]
open to works and projects dealing with traditional and/or future forms of the moving image.
Analogue and digital films/videos, experimental films (including sound/video), 2D and 3D animations, extended forms of traditional cinema, linear and non-linear narrative pictorial sequences, scaled displays and split or multiple screen arrangements can be entered. If desired, these can be complemented by modes of individual and collective interaction.

[PROCESSING]
open to works and projects the character of which is related to a process or situation.
Systems and installations specially conceived with a view to a local situation and/or to the inclusion of individual or collective action can be entered. These include immersive and hybrid (real/virtual) settings, performances. play and social software applications, smart objects, intelligent and ambient systems, as well as interface and interaction design exhibiting competent direction and improvisation as important constants in the handling of digital information units.

[TRANSPOSITION]
open to works and projects devoted to action and communication in technologically-defined networks.
Applications, prototypes and concepts using or specifically implementing network architectures independent of time and/or place can be entered. These include, for example, locality-bound and distributed systems (LAN/WAN/WIFI etc.), mobile computing, GPS applications, infrared and blue tooth connections. Decisive here is an original and experimental use of the technologically-defined topography as a communication territory.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

CALL FOR APPLICANTS: SEALAND IDENTITY PROJECT

Do you also believe that graphic design and visual communication should come
to terms with network society in the fullest sense of the word? Do you agree
that the visionary and the epic should be re-introduced into a design
context obsessed by individual lifestyle? Do you have a passion for fiction
and a weak spot for spy stories? Do you believe that design research - the
development of hypothetical notions and visionary statements - should be a
bigger part of your work, too? Would you like to be part of the design team
for a national identity? Then be introduced to Meta Haven, a one-year
research project initiated by designer Daniel van der Velden at the Jan van
Eyck Academie in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

The objective of this project is to develop a national identity for Sealand,
a mini-state off the British coast. The project, resulting in a printed and
internationally distributed publication, will concern itself with stamps,
money, passports and flags as much as with the network society, the
fictionalisation of history, and the 'data haven'. For a precise outline of
the project, please visit our project on the web:
http://www.janvaneyck.nl/sealand

If you are working in the field of design, or if you are a design or arts
student, and you want to learn and discuss on a more in-depth level what
design will become - and visually create that - you might want to apply to
participate in the Sealand identity project. If accepted, you will profit
from the intellectual climate and generosity of the Jan van Eyck Academie,
an internationally renowned centre for arts, design and theory, located in
the south of the Netherlands near Belgium and Germany, in the city that gave
birth to the European Union. For more information on the conditions of
application and acceptance, please visit http://www.janvaneyck.nl/sealand

Applications are due before September 15, 2003. Proposals should include a
resume and relevant visual material. Please send applications to:
Jan van Eyck Academie, Academieplein 1, 6211 KM Maastricht, Nederland att.

Call for Papers, Presenters, Developers, Performers,
Audience.

What: San Francisco Performance Video Symposium
When: 27 September 2003
Where: Dimension7, 150 Folsom St., San Francisco, CA
Who: Anyone can submit. Video artists, performance
artists, software developers, cultural and film
theorists are especially welcome.
Submissions are due 21 July 03.

The plan:

On 27 September, the Symposium will begin with a
series of speakers on ideas in performance video,
comcluding in a roundtable discussion. Following the
round table a series of performances would occur in
the Dimension7 video gallery. The evening will then
be capped off by a super-fun multimedia party!
Admission is technically free, but a donation might be
requested to help defray the costs of mounting this
Symposium, depending on the level of sponsorship
found.

Dimension 7 has more than adequate video projectors,
screens, and sound reinforcement.

The idea: Performative video: theory and practice

Recent innovations in computer software and
performance gains in hardware are now permitting the
development of a truly performative cinema. Thus far
three distinct camps seemed to have evolved over the
years: video light shows for dance clubs and raves and
the similar development of VJ culture on one end,
academic video art installations on the other end, and
a vast number of artists in between. This situation
bears some relation to what obtained in cinema in its
earliest years (nickelodeons, and all film was some
kind of an experiment, etc.) Significant theory wasnít
really developed until some 20 years into the history
of cinema with the early formative theories of the
19teens. Due to the dependence on rapidly changing
technology, contemporary video performance doesnít
have the luxury of 20 years to wait for theory to
ìgelî. Itís important that at this historic interstice
of music and video that Theory evolve along with the
emerging practice, and the practice develop its own
coherent theory. It is the purpose of this Symposium
to help that along at this historic juncture.
Discussions of the history of the form, the strengths
and shortcomings of the discipline, the challenges
ahead, the political implications and uses of, and the
trends within performance video - all of these need to
be discussed and brought into awareness.

All contents (papers, video, images, etc.) submitted
will be featured on a website dedicated to this
symposium after 27 September. The ideas need to get
out into the world as quickly as possible, so
performance video practitioners might acquire some new
common language, develop shared concerns, and create
useful theory in order to further the integrity and
coherence of this new practice in an age of digital
media convergence, and the near complete hegemony of
passive entertainment environments.

No honoraria are presently available ñ this is an all
volunteer effort, so if you wish to present your ideas
in person, please be aware that the symposium canít
help you with any expenses. However, if present
efforts to find sponsorship are successful, and
funding is found, this may all change, and presenters
and contributors will certainly be notified.

Please note, for your pleasure: Late September is the
BEST time to be in San Francisco, and this event will
be a truly extraordinary moment in history.

What to submit:

Send a .txt, .rtf, or MS Word document of your paper /
lecture notes attached to email. The email you send
should include a short single paragraph bio, and let
me know if you wish to be considered for live
presentation of your paper at the Symposium. If you
have a lecture AND a performance to provide, please
submit the lecture as noted above and the performance
idea per following paragraph.

Please email it to:

henry (dot) warwick (at) sbcglobal (dot) net

Those who would like to be considered ONLY for
performance that evening should send a CDR w/ a short
QuickTime movie or a DVD-R demo of your work and a
document describing what you want to do. Please
include a brief bio, and your email address.

Please send disk and documents to:

148 Dellbrook Ave
San Francisco CA

CALL FOR PAPERS: Lines of Flight Issue 2
Deadline: 31 October 2003

Lines of Flight is an internationally refereed, annual on-line review that provides a space for the circulation of research by Australian postgraduates working across a range of disciplines. We are currently seeking submissions for second issue from postgraduate students working across the range of arts, fine arts and humanities subjects whose research involves them in historical analysis and investigation of any kind. The framing contention for this edition of L.O.F is that historical research of a sort traditionally restricted to history departments is now blossoming outside that jurisdiction to such an extent that the disciplinary emplacement of history is at risk of being blown wide open. We are especially keen to publish work by history postgraduates that takes a historiographical approach to concerns of this nature.
