The Experimental Television Center announces the next deadline for the Artists in Residency Program, July 15th, for residencies between September 3rd, 2003 and January 31, 2004.

The Residency supports contemporary electronic media art projects. Through individualized instruction, we provide artists an opportunity to study the processes and techniques of analog and digital imaging and to then use the system independently in the creation of new works. The Center provides a retreat-like environment where artists working in all genres are encouraged to explore concepts of digital and analog imaging and to experiment and expand the formal boundaries of moving-image media. Participating artists have complete aesthetic and technical control over all aspects of the making process.

The image processing system is a hybrid tool set, permitting the artist to create interactive relationships between older historically important analog instruments and new digital technologies. The system offers a unique experience because it is an integration of historically significant artistsí-designed analog modules such as colorizers and image processors, as well as commercially available tools, and integrates both analog and computer-based components.

In 2003 with a grant from mediaThe foundation, we are able to significantly advance the digital components of the imaging system, incorporating a second Power Mac G4, along with DVD Studio Pro, Flash and other software; a customized Doepfer A-100 system with sonic and control modules; and innovative new interactive software, including Max and Jitter from Cycling 74.

The postmark deadline (emailed requests are acceptable) is July 15th

To apply please send the following:
1. A brief project description
2. A current resume
3. A prioritized set of dates between September 3, 2003 and January 31, 2004.
4. A sample of completed work with SASE if you wish it returned.

For more information please visit www.experimentaltvcenter.org or contact us etc@experimentaltvcenter.org or 607 687-4341.

The Center's programs have been supported by the Electronic Media and Film Program at the New York State Council on the Arts, the Media Arts Program of the National Endowment for the Arts, mediaThe foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Media Action Grant Program of Media Alliance, by corporate support from Dave Jones Design and Black Hammer Productions and by the contributions of many individual artists.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: STENCIL ART SHOW
DEADLINE AUGUST 7, 2003

StencilArchive.org and The Budget Gallery present
Stencils: the Art of Negative Spaces

WHERE: The Crucible Steel Gallery, CELLspace, San Francisco, CA
WHEN: Opening Event: Aug. 21, 2003
Closing Event: Sept. 4, 2003 with the last day of show on Sept. 6

ABOUT THE SHOW:
Online community Web site StencilArchive.org, (http://stencilarchive.org) and
public art reclaimer The Budget Gallery (http://budgetgallery.org) invite you
to participate in the ongoing revitalization of a timeless art form. Dating
back to earliest cave paintings, stenciling has been used as an easy,
repetitive method for human expression. A cousin of printmaking, stencil art
requires an idea and minimal tools to make it happen over and over again. A
stencil?s potential to be placed anywhere opens up a dialog within its found
habitat, and creates conversations with whatever else is around it.

The show?s mission wishes to express the vitality, creativity, and diversity
of the international stencil community and the language that its art creates.
The gallery will present stencil art via several themes: international,
national, and local, with a DIY nontoxic, put-up area (a blank wall) for
anybody who wants to paint their stencil during the show?s run. There will
also be a stencil-crafting table at the show?s opening and a panel/Q&A
discussing stencil topics at it?s closing event.

)) A CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ((

We are now taking submissions of any kind of stencil art. You can paint them
on any surface, or even send an actual stencil (the stencil cut-out gets
little visibility and is the most mysterious part of the art form). Any artist
who submits a piece will be represented on one of the themed walls based on
his/her location. If you submit more than one piece, you have the potential of
getting up again if room permits.

StencilArchive.org believes that as long as it?s a stencil, or a stencil cut-
out, it?s a piece of art worth sharing. All levels of experience are welcome
and encouraged to submit, and all forms (images, text-only, outdoor or indoor)
are welcome. Please do not send any photos of stencils or other types of art
work unless there?s an actual stencil on it.

)) HOW TO SUBMIT ((

Mail all submissions to:
Stencil Submission c/o
Russell H.
3705 25th St., #4
San Francisco, CA
USA

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: Must be received no later than August 7, 2003
(late submissions may not go up)

::The following information is REQUIRED for each piece submitted::

-the title of the piece(s)
-the name of the artist(s) (if you use a street ?handle?, and want to use it
instead, your personal name will not be released to the public)
-the location of the artist(s)
-artist contact information (em, snail add, and phone #)
-permission to sell as benefit (see below for more info)
-suggested price of the piece(s)

If you want your artwork returned to you, please include a self-addressed,
stamped envelop (SASE) with the correct amount of postage on it. SASE must
also be the same size as the original package. Once the show goes down, your
stencils will be mailed back to you in your SASE envelope.

Due to the nature of the show, the curators cannot be responsible for any
alteration or damage to your original art. The Crucible Steel Gallery is an
unsupervised, free, public gallery, so the curators cannot be responsible for
any theft of artwork either. We?ll try our best to take care or your stuff if
you want it back.

All artists in the show will have their name in all the promotional materials.
A special page will be set up on StencilArchive.org documenting the show, the
pieces displayed, and the artists that made them.

CARE TO SUPPORT STENCILARCHIVE.ORG AND THE BUDGET GALLERY?

StencilArchive.org and The Budget Gallery are grassroots organizations that
believe in enhancing our public spaces with amazing art.

This being said, if you are interested in giving permission to sell your piece
(s), please do so. All funds raised will go directly to covering costs of
renting the gallery, producing the opening with anything extra supporting both
of our projects. Prices will be reasonable so that anyone can walk away with
amazing stencil art.

If you do not wish to donate your piece, and do not want it returned, your
artwork will become part of the physical, and eventually digitally documented,
StencilArchive files.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

russellh@stencilarchive.org
sl@budgetgallery.org

Thanks for being a part of what should be a great show.

SEX MACHINE
EYEDRUM ART & MUSIC GALLERY
MARCH 20 - APRIL 17 2004

Proposals must be postmarked by November 15, 2003
SEX MACHINE
In March 2004 Eyedrum Art and Music gallery will host SEX MACHINE, an
international show on the most intimate of human extensions.
In previous times (that is, before the modern era, say, about 300 years
ago) the only accoutrements to the sex act may well have been the
fetishistic materials of bondage, and those tools which accompanied the
act of seduction: musical instruments, wine or other chemical enhancers, a
book of poetry perhaps.† No doubt the prolonged application of technique
to sexuality was the†prerogative of the nobility and the leisured class.†
For most people then the accentuation and prolongation of the sex act
would have been most often considered perverse in and of itself, disabling
it from the world of procreation and subsequent nurturing of the family.††
But now we seem to be entering the epoch of 'bare life' as philosopher
Giorgio Agamben has termed it.† The 'naked life' of the population comes
under increasing scrutiny and control of the sovereign forces of the state
(in the mediated form of the corporate trans-nationals); in fact, CREATING
many aspects of this bare life, at the root of which is the sex act itself
and it's increasing severance from human reproduction in an age of cloning
and recombinant DNA research.†
The sex act itself, in its non-metaphorized state, is indeed a simple
mechanical machine, rhythmic and lulling, while strangely excitory, in its
repetitive nature, a repetition which music generally and rock music
particularly have used to its own detourned advantage.† (Perhaps why the
'bare life' of the sex act itself has not been much valued by artists, the
metaphorical and phenomenological 'clothing' of the act seeming to be more
productive of various forms of representation, not to mention seductive
for the artist's own purposes.)†
The act itself is now completely permeated with mechanisms of various
kinds: contraceptive 'machines' of various materials (we must include
condoms of various sorts, male and female, as well as contraceptive and
Viagra-type pharmacologies as machinic), the whole apparatus of the
PRODUCTION of sexual desire such as the videos, movies, and games of the
porno industry (probably the only industry which makes money from the net)
and in fact the vaporous intrusions of the net itself into our psyche.
(There are even people doing work in haptic research called Teledildonics
which hopes to sell a part of the population on the dream of virtually
'reaching out and touching someone' in order to stimulate and bring to
fruition the sex act.)† Not to even mention the whole industry of sex
aides such as vibrators, dildos, and so on.

Eyedrum is doing an 'all stripped down' show of sex machines. Lovingly
crafted devices for the practice of, well, if not love, then one of love's
major components.†† Unlike Terry† Eagleton's quote that "An instrumental
rationality, one attentive to the use of object, is at least an
alternative to the fetishism of them," we would like to have our cake and
eat it too -- a fetishized rationality of lubricious (and artistic, which
we think can count for the same thing) intent.
We are looking for workable (or potentially so) sex machines, or plans for
such, or utopias of sex machines, stroking, throbbing, probing, their way
into a brave new alliance between flesh, steel, latex, plastic, and
electricity. Any interpretation of the sex machine will be considered.
