_To _all _Californians _on _this _list:_

The state is in a pretty serious budget crisis, and Gray Davis wants to eliminate the already reduced California ArtsCouncil. Make your voice heard, and call these five people. Tell them that you do not support the elimination of the California Arts Council.

I just called them, and then spoke to a series of receptionists who all were remarking about the volume of calls they have received in support of the CAC. do your part. It's a cliche, but it is (hopefully) democracy in action.

Sundance Channel presents TV LAB

http://www.sundancechannel.com/tvlab/

Do you have an idea for a television series? Something you've never seen before, something that might be too high concept for typical television? Too alternative? Too innovative? That's what we're looking for.
Sundance Channel presents TV LAB, a program that showcases tomorrow's TV today. In our half-hour pilot episode, TV LAB will present a handful of new ideas for television series as brief pilots, along with a "pitch" by their creators. In the process, we're presenting a first look at what might be the next wave of original television.
We're looking for concepts that re-invent existing TV formats ú the game show, sitcom, soap opera, cop show drama, reality show ú or propose entirely new ones.
Since we're looking for unexpected ideas, we're looking for people who don't typically do this. We're asking artists, novelists, theatre directors, fashion designers, musicians, independent filmmakers, and members of the viewing audience: if you could create a TV show, what would it be?
We would love to see your vision for television's future realized, and hope that you will join a select group of creators making the initial submissions to TV LAB.

Artist in Residence

Starting in 2002, the media lab at the Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts is offering artists from The Netherlands and other countries the possibility of carrying out investigations in three areas:
· Streaming media
· Wireless applications
· 3D applications
Artistic concept, innovation and cooperation are to be central in these investigations. Preference will be given to research which makes use of "open source" and that develops "tools" which will be available for further use. Investigations that have an interdisciplinary character will also receive preference. The artists will be working together with Dutch universities and academies in the research.

Facilities
An Artist in Residence will have at his/her disposal
· Technical facilities, including assistance
· Working budget
· Housing
Technical specialists advise the participating artists during research, experiments and production.

Results
The outcome of the research will be presented in an appropriate manner, through exhibitions, discussions, seminars, publications and workshops.

Applications
Applications will be evaluated twice a year (December 1 and July 1) by an internal committee. This will be done on the basis of a research proposal with a work plan, which must include a formulation of the problem, and a description of the resources needed (technical and facilities) and the result. The artist should also submit a comprehensive biography, with documentation on his/her previous projects. The final round of the selection process will be based on an interview. The duration of the work will depend on the research proposal, but should run an average of three to six months.

the date of our festival in 2003: Oct. 30 - Nov. 2

the actual call for entries is available online.
you can register with the form on our website

and again this year there are three interesting sections:
for the international backup.award we are at first interested in shorts

we are interested in film and video productions developed using digital
means. (shorts, music video, experimental, trailer and so on)

we also have the backup.clipaward for music video, but it is a national
award. backup defines the videoclip as a creative playground for
audiovisual and intermedial experiments in the realm of new media.

and we have the international call for entries for the backup.lounge|lab.
there we will create a workspace. together with a workshop leader,
the invited participants will put a continual recontextualization of the

a dynamic network of international creators from differing areas of art.
testing truth - xor - the metaphoric quality of binary code forms the
thematic starting point.

6th International Art and Technology Festival

5 - 8 December 2003

LETTERS - PRO POSITIONS

CALL FOR PROJECTS

WORD ING

At particular moments in time, in every culture, texts (i.e. the expression and formulation of an idea into words) have played a fundamental role in explaining, pushing the boundaries, and provoking changes. What is strange and interesting is for thoughts, intellectual concepts, and existing dynamic to come together in the form of words placed in the appropriate order on inexpensive material, and then for this material to ÒstirÓ the world. The Ten Commandments, the Gospels, MarxÕs Capital, the theory of relativity, writings on psychoanalysis, just to name a few, are famous texts that have changed the world we live in. Texts have a direct impact on art, which often expresses the same content in its own way, with or without the use of words, or creates content that has arisen from the original text.

But what is happening in the case of digital culture, where text, traditionally identified with printed media, now acquires a different dynamic? What about hypertext or even hypermedia where text is augmented with images, sound, other text, actions? Do these new forms of text have the ÒpowerÓ of significant impact, or perhaps more, or less? Does form overpower content or does it serve and support it? What is the relationship between the various elements contained in hypertext and what role do these play, if any?

PROPOSITION TO WRITE A LETTER

Letters: personal ideas expressed in writing, addressed to a friend, a colleague, a loved one or a stranger whom we admire or loathe; a form of text, perhaps not as grand but just as powerful and even more fascinating in that it encompasses the incubation of ideas; a foundation of culture in which we have all taken part in, from the migrant to the philosopher to those responsible for our destiny; a form of social practice and communication which slowly diminished by the widespread use of the telephone and easy travel, and is now re-emerging thanks to the Internet and SMS messages.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Computer Games and Art: Intersections and Interactions

Submissions of previously unpublished articles are invited for a special
edition of the book series Anomalie, guest edited by Grethe Mitchell and
Andy Clarke, entitled "Computer Games and Art: Intersections and
Interactions".

This call is available online at the following address:

http://www.transformreality.com

THEMES

What new art forms are emerging from computer games, and how do they fit
into the world of art galleries and museums? Should computer games play with
ideas or are they just meant to be played? What makes a computer game a work
of art? Can a commercial computer game be art or is it just well-executed
craft? Is digital art just a game? Can art be playable? These issues and
others are to be explored in a special edition of Anomalie: "Computer Games
and Art: Intersections and Interactions".

The theme of Computer Games and Art will be interpreted widely, but could
include the following:

- Art, whether digital or non-digital, that appropriates or critiques the
aesthetics, conventions, iconography, or technology of computer games.

- Games levels, patches, skins or modifications as art.

- Interviews with, or monographs by, relevant practitioners.

- Criticism, case studies, histories, surveys, and overviews.

- Studies of the aesthetics and iconography of computer games.

- Computer games as art objects.

- Play and playfulness in digital art.

This list is clearly not exhaustive, and alternative interpretations of the
theme are invited. No restriction is placed upon the definition of "computer
game" or "art".

The schedule of submission and publication is as follows:

- Deadline for submissions: 31st October 2003

- Notification on or after: 21st November 2003

- Final revised papers by: 9th January 2004

- Publication: Spring 2004

Comments and queries should be sent to Grethe Mitchell at the following
address:

Pangaea
Derelict Sensation Film Challenge
We challenge you to make a film - a narrative, documentary or art film which should engage with the idea of "the derelict" -- a derelict location, or in some way explore the connection that derelict spaces have to the society that creates them.

"There's a plethora of shit out there", says Andrew Kotting, "but within that shit there are wonderful nuggets of the sublime."

. which is where you come in.

You've probably used derelict buildings for atmosphere and for cheap locations but now we're challenging you to bring 'dereliction' to the foreground of your film. Among Kotting's 'plethora of shit' we want you to search out your 'sublime nugget' about the 'derelict sensation'.

All formats accepted; VHS PAL only for preview. Films to be under 10 minutes running time. You will retain copyright to your film, but agree to allow us to show the film at the event and to include details and stills of the film in any publicity materials. You must ensure that you have full copyright clearance for any music or interviews used.

========================

Please see www.thederelictsensation.com for further ideas.

Winning films will be shown at the Halloween Short Film Festival at the Institute of Contemporary Arts 10/11 January 2004. FIlms will be chosen by a panel including film-maker Andrew Kötting together with representatives of Halloween, Pangaea, The Derelict Sensation, Luna Nera and Lost Property.

Works submitted in languages other than English must be subtitled.
More on the website (guidelines, entry form).

OUTDOOR SCULPTURE EXHIBITION
Evergreen House
(Baltimore MD)

Discipline: Sculpture

ANNOUNCEMENT
Outdoor Exhibition Opportunity
Evergreen House, Baltimore, MD
September 2, 2003 Deadline

Evergreen House of Johns Hopkins University is seeking artists’ submissions for its third biennial juried exhibition of outdoor sculpture, Sculpture at Evergreen, from May 6 – October 2, 2004. Ten artists will be invited to create large-scale outdoor works that respond to the natural and built environments of Evergreen House, a 26-acre historic estate in Baltimore. The purpose of the exhibition is, in the words of 2002 juror Mary Jane Jacobs, to compel the participating artists to “practice in place” by considering the impact of such issues as the social and political economics of the estate, human intervention on the natural environment there, or the architecture of the site’s buildings.

The selected artists will visit the grounds with Ms. McGregor to select a site and begin their concept development. Following the visit, each artist will prepare a proposal with drawings and/or a model to Evergreen Curator Jackie O’Regan for final approval. All artists will be given a $3000 honorarium, which should cover the cost of design and fabrication. There will be up to $1000 available to cover transportation, installation and de-installation of each work. The artists will be responsible for removing their work at the end of the exhibition after October 4, 2004.

A catalogue will be produced for the exhibition which may include interviews with the artists and reproductions of their preliminary drawings and models along with their finished pieces. The drawings and/or models will be exhibited in Evergreen’s gallery during the run of the show.

All professional artists are encouraged to submit, but keep in mind that there are no additional funds for artists travel and/or lodging, and a minimum of two visits to the site are required, the first to view the site and the second to install the work. To apply, please submit:
- up to 20 slides in a plastic slide sheet
- a slide script giving the title, date, medium and dimensions for each work.
- a current resume
- brief statement about your work and approach to outdoor sites
- a self-addressed, adequately stamped and sized envelope (SASE), for return of materials.

Please do not email applications. Only hardcopy applications will be considered. Do not send original slides or original artwork. We will do our best to return all materials that are accompanied with an SASE after a decision has been made.

Please note that a proposal is not necessary at this time, only background information on the artists past work.
