Dear All,
Last week I listed a job opp at the Savannah College of Art and Design. A reader commented that the Savannah College of Art and Design has a strong reputation for being a really horrible place to work. To quote: "savannah college of art, to my understanding, is not a fit employer nor a fit educational institution"
I did a little research, and found this large website: http://www.scad-and-us.info/ which is dedicated to people who have been wronged by the school, and the number people is not small, it seems. It repeatedly compares the school/administration to the Mafia, and John Grisham's The Firm. It also mentions aesbestos in one building which has caused a large percentage of faculty who worked in the building to get cancer, some of whom have died; this has been swept under the carpet.
The gist of it is DO NOT APPLY TO TEACH AT THIS SCHOOL.
It sounds like a nightmare.
Stay away.
With love,
your editor

Australia, 2003 - Young Australian writers and audio/video artists
are now invited to participate in Neopoetry, a copyleft DVD compilation.
Neopoetry is an artistic project that facilitates collaborations between
young Australian writers and audio/video artists. The aim of Neopoetry is to
develop contemporary styles of writing by documenting them in the form of
video artworks. Graffiti, rhymes and online chat are just some of the new
forms of writing Neopoetry will document.
Neopoetry encourages young writers to contemplate ways in which their medium
can interact with and inform moving images and sound.
Applications can be made by individual artists or by groups of artists. The
application form can be downloaded from the website.
www.neopoetry.org
Neopoetry is copyleft, which means that it can be played to the
public at not-for-profit events and for educational purposes without the
prior consent of the artists. These conditions make it easier to distribute
and exhibit the DVD. Artists will still receive payment for any commercial
use of their work.
Call for Proposals Deadline March 14.
This project has been assisted by the Federal Government through the
Australia Council, it's arts funding and advisory body.

CALL FOR PAPERS: "The new 'others': western media and society post-9/11"
Deadline for articles: 31 May, 2003
September 11 (or "9/11") marks a watershed for a complex of issues to do with the relationship between the "West" and the Arab/Muslim world. Before September 11 2001 the 'othering' of the Arab-Muslim world was already evident in Australia (the "Tampa incident",
Lebanese "gangs" etc.), but after that date the discourse of fear and otherness is given more of a pretext and includes, for example, the "Children Overboard" affair and, tragically, the October 2002 bombing of Western tourists in Bali. The media are a crucial factor in the construction of cultural understandings of these events and issues. In this issue of MIA we invite contributions exploring the media's role in constructing our understandings of the Arab/Muslim world, especially in relation to recent events and contemporary issues such as: September 11, refugees and asylum seekers, terrorism, the war in Afghanistan, "regime change" in Iraq, anti-Western sentiments and, possibly, the impetus for the West to identify a new 'other' in the post-Soviet era.
