March 31 DEADLINE FOR WOODSTOCK A-I-R, a residency program for artists of color working in the photographic arts
Deadline for submissions: March 31, 2003 (delivered)
About WOODSTOCK A-I-R:
Begun in 1999, WOODSTOCK A-I-R, the Center’s artist in residency program, was created to secure opportunities for artists of color working in the photographic arts and guarantee an open forum for their work and ideas.Ê
WOODSTOCK A-I-R provides residents with the facilities and support to contemplate and create within one of the oldest artist colonies in the United States - allowing artists to both experience and enrich the living legacy of Woodstock as a Colony of the Arts.
WOODSTOCK A-I-R was established from our mission - to provide an artistic home for the photographic arts and from CPW's dedication to artists from under-served communities, those on the threshold of their careers, mid-career, and/or those whose work can be seen in a new light.
DESCRIPTION/ OFFERINGS:
Each year the Center invites 5 artists and 1 writer/ curator of color to participate in WOODSTOCK A-I-R in Woodstock, New York. Residencies are 2 to 4 weeks long during June thru September. Participating artists receive housing and stipends for food, travel, and a honorarium.Ê
Artists are invited to continue work on existing projects, embark on new ones, and/or contemplate their artistic goals in terms of where they have been and where they are going. Participants have 24-hour access to the Center's black-and-white darkroom, computer (PC platform) station, and library.Ê Cable modem and high quality out-put digital printing is expected to be available for the 2003 program. The critical writing residency invites writers or curators to take advantage of the solitude of Woodstock and utilize their time in completing scholarly work on artists of color working in the photographic arts (either contemporary or historic) with the goal of publication or exhibition. The Center’s library, Internet connection, and the libraries of regional colleges are accessible to participating residents.
Residents have their work featured in a biannual exhibition at the Center's galleries and/or have their work published in PHOTOGRAPHY Quarterly.Ê Additionally participating artists’ work with Center staff to present their work on the Internet via the Center's web site. Professional development is encouraged through scheduled studio visits between artists and Center staff as well as with visiting critics. Residents are also welcome to participate in the Center’s Woodstock Photography Workshop & Lectures Series that brings leaders in the world of photography to Woodstock for two-day classes. At the conclusion of each A-I-R season Center staff share work samples with a selection of curators and galleries. Participating artists retain all rights to their work.

APRIL 30 DEADLINE FOR Grants for Public Art Projects FROM THE Gunk Foundation
The Grants for Public Art Projects intend to challenge the current market-dominated system of art production and to move art out of the market and into the public realm. Given the lack of funding for cutting edge art and artists in our country, art production is often geared towards what sells and not what provokes thought.Ê For example, work that is shown in the spaces of public transportation, city streets, or work places and is seen by people outside of the art and academic worlds. We are also interested in work that catches one by surprise—the audience may not plan to be an audience (like planning to go see a performance) but is one inadvertently (the performance happens on the street on their way to work). We are looking for non-traditional, thought-provoking public work that is site specific: i.e the context in which it is seen is essential to its meaning. It is our belief that work that is site specific and that cuts into the space of everyday life will have the most profound effect on politicizing the public realm.
Types of Projects Funded
Grants are provided for "works" of art (not, for example, art festivals, group exhibitions or general operating support for public art organizations). Because of our limited funds and the need to stay focued, the committee has decided not to fund art education, art therapy, mural projects, community gardens, restoration projects, architectural design projects, traditional commemorative sculpture/painting, traditional theater projects or documentary film. In addition, it has also decided not to fund video, film, or music unless it has been specifically earmarked for a non-traditional public space (i.e. not public TV or radio but free outdoor screenings or performances). If you have questions concerning whether your project fits into our guidelines, please call or e-mail us to discuss your project: info@gunk.org or (845) 255-8252. Please also look in the Grant Archive at the some of the previous works funded to get a better idea of the type of work we are pursuing.
Who Can Apply
anyone can apply:Ê individuals, groups, or organizations, and there is no need for a fiscal sponsor. International projects and artists are encouraged.
