The application deadline for 2003 is April 25th. Application details can be found below.
INTRODUCTION
Braziers International Artists’ Workshop is an annual event, established in 1995. It is an artist-run, non-profit-making initiative unique in the UK that provides a creative arena for artists who are ambitious for their work and open to the challenges of an environment that demands experiment, co-operation and exchange
Braziers Workshop removes artists geographically and conceptually from their usual studio practice and brings them together to work in a way that is mutually beneficial, contributing to a developing international dialogue that explores our cultural and parochial differences whilst celebrating our commonality.
Since 1995, 145 artists from Africa, Australia, Central Asia, Europe, India, North and South America have taken part, working in a variety of disciplines and media: time-based, photographic, film/video, new media, installation, painting and sculpture.
Braziers has a powerful and enduring effect on lives and working practices and provides an enriching experience by:
· Providing a focused period of time in which to make work
· Being about process and not end product
· Allowing artists to take risks
· Challenging and changing perceptions
· Providing a thinking and conscious situation with other people
· Encouraging collaboration and co-operation
· Galvanising practice
§ Generating international dialogue and contacts
§ Providing new opportunities for those taking part, including residencies and exhibitions
§ Encouraging innovation and change
§ Allowing re-evaluation of practice
“…enough room to navigate through ideas and working processes different from the habitual…a level of concentration enhanced by the synergy of living in a community of artists hard at work”
“Braziers is a very innocent place where you can wander unfocussed and forget about stumbling”
“…what better place or space for artists to question, explore or assert their own creativity?”
“It was great for me to embrace the distractions and incoherence which you feel you should ignore in a more prescriptive studio practice”
“Time did strange things to me at Braziers, after a couple of days I could hardly remember my life before, but by the end of the workshop I felt like I had just arrived.”
LOCATION
The workshop takes place at Braziers Park, a residential college in Oxfordshire on the edge of the Chiltern hills. The 17th Century mansion house is set in 50 acres of park and farmland dotted with numerous outbuildings and barns. Each artist is allocated a space in one of the outbuildings. This can be used either as studio space in which to make work or as a base from which to make site-specific work in and around the extensive grounds or house.
All meals, accommodation and studio space are provided along with technical support and facilities.
STRUCTURE
Artists are resident for the duration of the 16-day workshop and can choose to camp or stay in the house, depending on budget. A series of artists, performers, writers and critics are invited to attend throughout the workshop to encourage critical debate and dialogue. This will include presentations, lectures and studio visits.
Whilst the emphasis is placed firmly upon work in progress, the final Sunday will be open to the public and fellow artists to visit the studios and view the work.
Funding
The Workshop has received funding from the Arts Council of England, Southern Arts, Visiting Arts, and other private individuals and organisations both in Britain and other countries. This funding goes towards the running costs of the workshop and enabling those without the means to attend. All places are subsidised. There are a limited number of fully funded places decided on by an independent panel together with funding bodies such as Visiting Arts and are allocated strictly according to need. Artists are encouraged to seek financial help from their own national or regional funding organisations, charitable trusts, or to seek sponsorship. Artists in the UK should approach their Regional Office of the Arts Council. Successful applicants from other countries should also try their British Council Offices (see www.britishcouncil.org for a list of offices worldwide).
If applying for funding, the full cost you should try to secure for a place is £900. If paying your own way without external support, the subsidised rate is £375, or £180 if you are prepared to camp. This covers all meals, accommodation, working space, technical support and facilities for the duration of the Workshop. When applying for funding, participants also need to bear in mind the cost of airfares (if coming from outside the UK), travel to Braziers, materials and subsistence costs.
