Word in Motion - 2. International poetic video festival
September, 2003
Riga, Latvia

In September, 2003 text group "Orbita" will organize 2. International
Poetic Video festival "Word in Motion". First festival was organized in
2001 with more than 30 works shown from 15 different countries (Latvia,
Russia, USA, UK, Belgium, Macedonia etc.) Some of Latvian participants'
works you can find in videoteca at http://www.orbita.lv.

Poetic video (poetic short films) is the genre, mutually developed by film
and video artists. It is synthesis of text and visual image, video
interpretation of poetry or video editing of text, which gives it a poetic
meaning.

In the framework of this year's festival there will be not only screenings
of festival works, but also several other programs, devoted to particular
subjects. For example "The United States of Poetry" - film series by Bob
Holman (USA), which can be considered an original video anthology of
American poetry.

This year festival is organized in co-operation with Latvian Poetry Days,
and during the festival there will be poetry readings and theater
performances by poets, musicians and video artists.

Participation:
This year organizers have decided to broaden the limits of the genre: films
on poetic texts, video documentations of literary readings and
performances, films about poetry (and poets) and photo-poetic collages,
where text is used as the main visual element, will also be considered.

Any other experimental forms of interaction between poetic texts, sound and
visual image are also welcome.

Information about festival works as well as poetical and critical texts on
interaction between literature and visual arts will be published in small
reader.

Works should be submitted by August 1, 2003.
Formats: Betacam, super VHS, VHS, MiniDV or CD-ROM.

Works together with application form should be sent to:
"Orbita"
Stabu street 104-19,
Riga, LV-1009
Latvia

Aplication form is available in the net:

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: International Art Festival ARTCONCEPT (St Petersburg, Russia)

International Art Festival ARTCONCEPT, ST PETERSBURG.
The purpose of ARTCONCEPT is to develop a festival of the syncretic arts. Action,
performance, installation, multimedia - considered "boundary" fields in relation to
traditional art - demand more serious attention and study. We hope to present, as
far as possible, the most tendentious currents in the modern cultural process.
The festival will focus on the creators of conceptual art. We seek works by artists
and experimenters who successfully create new experiences, innovators who develop
new aesthetic layers. The philosophy of festival is to gather under one "roof"
diverse creative authors - artists, poets, musicians, writers, film-directors,
multi-media creators, art-critics. By collaborating on a single stage, artists of
various disciplines will be motivated to look at the process of creating art on a
broader scale, to push themselves beyond their narrow field of specialization. In
this way, we hope to nurture a new art ambience, a language of art more coherent and
distinct than we have previously used. From this effort, perhaps, can emerge a core
group of artists with common vision and goals; and a positive future. We plan to
publish a second and final catalogue of the festival, to sum up its achievements.

To entry for participation is in two steps:
First - the organizers dispose a site in internet and in mass-media, where are
descriptions about ideas of festival, providing an email address where entrants can
send descriptions of their projects as well as copies of their resumes.
Second, the organizers will notify entrants if their work has been chosen for
inclusion in the festival. At that point, they may choose to submit additional
material in the form of audio, video tapes or CDs.
Four to five artists will be chosen for each category. (A collective will count as
one artist.)
No more than 40 individuals will participate overall.
One important aspect of the festival will be "Art Laboratories".Artists who
participate will exhibit two types of work:
1. Works the artist created before the festival, and, exhibited at the festival.
2. Works created in a collaborative way during the Art Laboratory.
Festival Duration: 6 days.

Dates: September 2003 in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

Sound Art for ROCK'S ROLE, a Group Exhibition
Art in General

ART IN GENERAL CALLS FOR SOUND WORKS FOR GROUP EXHIBITION

NEW YORK, NY -- Art in General is calling for Sound Art for ROCK'S ROLE (AFTER RYOANJI), a group exhibition of sound works by artists responding to John Cage's musical transliterations of the Japanese Zen rock garden, Ryoanji. The elements of the exhibition will be arranged both spatially and temporally so that they can be heard both in isolation and together. Contributors to the exhibition will be invited to prepare their own "mixes" subject to the requirement that every contribution be heard within any half hour interval.

"Cage's view of Ryoanji was that the specific arrangement of the 15 stones was not as important as the way in which the emptiness of the garden and the regularity of the lines of raked sand intensify their individuality... Rock's Role (After Ryoanji) will follow this same approach, breaking contributions into 'continuous' and 'discrete' elements corresponding to the stones or the raked sand of the garden," Art in General notes. "In the exhibition, continuous elements will be mixed and overlapped; discrete elements will be played in succession."

They are seeking contributions employing sounds and sound-making means of all kinds, with the only requirement that the contributions are capable of co-existing with any other sounds in the exhibition.

Deadline: September 27, 2003

Compete details are available on Art in General's website at http://www.artingeneral.org (click on Resources for Artists)
