But how does technology shape cultural identity and how has it changed the way we live together? Can digital technology promote dialogue between people from different cultures, creating a better, fairer and more peaceful world where cultural diversity and tolerance prevail? And how can an artist's vision and sensibility reflect and contribute to cultural diversity and digital pluralism?

These are the questions we want to address through the "Digital Pluralism - UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2003 at IAMAS".

CALLING ALL WINNEBAGOS, BIG RIGS, SILVER BULLETS, TRICKED-OUT ASTROS & PECULIAR LIMOUSINES!!

Following the success of our now world-famous multimedia mega performance event, PLATINUM OASIS (guest curated by Ron Athey & the Honorable Dr. Vaginal Davis), OUTFEST: 21st Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival will present PLATINUM SNAPMEAT, a fully immersive multimedia performance environment and alternative currency meat economy masterminded by world famous internet art star, Shu Lea Cheang!
PLATINUM SNAPMEAT will take place Saturday, July 19th, 8 pm-2 am in the shadows of the crumbling infamous ruin that is Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel (RIP Bobby).

PLATINUM SNAPMEAT - The Setting
The New American Century Los Angeles - year 2030. The super pipeline that pumps oil directly from the Middle East to the truck stops has wiped out the lot lizards' operating ground; American neo-colonialism has pipelined the sex trade. In this ecosystem, the "Snapper" gang controls and conducts the SnapMeat Mart amidst a transient community of Winnebagos, Silver Bullets, big rigs, tricked-out Astros and peculiar limousines in the smoldering shadows of the crumbling Ambassador Hotel. A giant pig roasts on a gyrating spit and the constantly glowing market monitors speckle the landscape.

Snapper Gangs use imaging mobile phones and once people are "snapped" (photographed, voluntarily or not) they become SnapMeat and go up for sale on the wireless electronic auction block set up on the lot. The "patrons," the hungry and venturesome flesh seekers, come loaded with G notes to bid on the SnapMeat on the market website. The Meat is bid on electronically and transactions are completed on the lot's auction block. Patrons can then take their SnapMeat to the lot's private quarters where they will be entertained by an array of engaging sensual performances and a scintillating cocktail bar. The SnapMeat can be bought, tasted and resold with G-currency. The Snapper Gangs build their sex trade empire on good old American style!

PLATINUM SNAPMEAT - The Call
In search of racketeers and suckers, patrons and perfidious hucksters to assemble a transient SnapMeat community! Outcasts needed to thrive in the underground Meat Trade on the smoldering ruined grounds of the grand Ambassador Hotel.

CALLING ALL WINNEBAGOS, BIG RIGS, SILVER BULLETS, TRICKED-OUT ASTROS AND PECULIAR LIMOSINES! You are invited to submit a proposal for you, your posse and your phat vehicle to participate in PLATINUM SnapMeat! (ie. Performance/atmospheric hospitality inside trailer, exterior vehicle design on accordance with theme, media presentation, etc.)

DEADLINE - JUNE 16TH, 2003

Speakers and screamers will include prominent women artists, performers, writers and activists including Finley, Mary Gaitskill, Martha Wilson, Nicole Blackman and many others. Collection of Art and Writing on Globalization
Terra Nova
(Newark NJ)

Terra Nova books are anthologies that encourage innovative writing and art on nature and culture, presented in a serious and engaging way. Built on the principle that scientific and environmental subjects benefit from imaginative presentation, Terra Nova crosses the borders between disciplines to show how serious discussions occur in many fields of creative inquiry. We are currently seeking contributions for a new book that looks at GLOBALIZATION as an cultural and artistic force. For us, globalization is more than the global integration of markets and economic systems. It’s a question of culture as well. Nowhere seems so far away from anywhere else in this web-linked world. What we eat, use, and wear is produced all over the world. Terra Nova is looking for contributors whose work is especially cognizant of the unique challenges the world faces today; where a globally applied scientific and technological worldview meets local cultures, customs, and different ways of knowing. For prose: We want pieces between 3,000-6,000 words. For poetry: We will not use any poems shorter than ten lines, and we would prefer to publish a group of poems by each selected poet. For art: Please send a selection of work that will reproduce well in black-and-white. Photography and line drawing work especially well.
