CALL FOR WORK

>=Innovations dont mean a thing if they dont deliver profit.<=
Asgrow/Monsanto PR statement 2000

The next (Fall 2003) "issue" of ACM's Contextin' Art will focus on the
relationship between genetic science, information technology (IT) and
culture. As the difference between theoretical science and its
commercial application becomes increasingly blurred, the direction of
research itself becomes a site of contention. Acknowledging this, the
interests of capital continue to develop a culture of consent in all
domains. There have been a number of art exhibitions designed to
>=discuss<= the philosophical implications of genetic and information
technologies over the past few years. Many of these activities aim the
discourse at a metaphysical future that is simultaneously a posthuman
utopia and an irreversible destruction of Nature, while deflecting the
material and ideological conditions converging in the present. The
struggle over genetically modified foods is but one aspect of the
current situation that represents capitals further expansion of power
over all aspects of life. The Fall 2003 issue will run alongside
>=YOUgenics,<= an exhibition looking at genetics from diverse, critical
and current perspectives. ( http://www.yougenics.net )

Were looking for texts, visual projects, performance documents and
web-based works that critically engage the topic of genetics, IT and
consumable culture. DEADLINE: August 30, 2003

The festival presents current documentary films and videos, the media art exhibition MONITORING, as well as the interfiction symposium. We invite all filmmakers, media people, and artists to submit their latest works and projects for the individual sections of the Festival program. Closing date for entries is August 15th, 2003.

A major focus of the Fesival is current films and videos which explore their subject matters with documentary means. The video program of the Festival also focuses on the innovative use of digital media and video-specific tools. For this section, experimental and artistic video works may be submitted as well.

MONITORING
The exhibition MONITORING deals with the current room-related positioning of media art. During the Festival, it displays approximately 15 media installations and sculptures, which will be selected from the entries. The exhibition will be held in the Suedfluegel and other locations of the Kassel KulturBahnhof. The exhibition is a cooperative effort of the Festival, the ªKasseler Kunstverein´ and the Kulturdezernat / documenta Archive of the City of Kassel.

Lancaster Film & New Media Festival 2003

Lancaster may not be as sunny as Cannes or as romantic as Venice, but this
summer the city will be hosting it’s first Film and New Media Festival.

Budding Tarantinos and Polanskis are being asked to submit films for the
event, which will take place from Saturday 12th- Sunday 13th July. There
are four submission categories, Short Animation, Short Fiction, Documentary

individuals or groups who have never exhibited or had a film shown publicly.
Experimental works are also encouraged.

Screenings will take place over the weekend at The Dukes Film Theatre in
Lancaster’s Moor Lane and at Folly on Castle Park and will include a
screening of international works and a seminar with presentations from
nationally regarded professionals. This will culminate in an Awards
Ceremony to be held on Sunday 13th July.

The event is being jointly organised by Lancaster City Council’s BEST Centre
in partnership with the Council’s Arts and Events Service and Folly. A
steering group has been set up with representatives from these groups and
various other members of the film community to organise the festival.

Applications are invited from individuals or organisations in Lancashire and
Cumbria. The closing date for submissions is Monday 19th May. Entry forms
can be downloaded from www.folly.co.uk or call the BEST Centre on 01524
